Having a rival department to EAD created a really cool dynamic within Nintendo and I miss that. When you don't have an anti-Miyamoto everything feels the same.

You don't get stuff like that anymore and that's what I mean when I say I miss the dynamic that a rival department creates.
Wario was the anti-Mario. Metroid was the anti-Zelda.

It's part of the reason I could never get into Metroid Prime.
The classic Metroid games felt like a genuinely different take on an action adventure game. Something completely different from Zelda in both gameplay and tone. Zelda plays things straight and Metroid is weird as hell. Samus' abilities are actually really unorthodox compared to other game characters.
Where as Prime feels like a first person Zelda game with a science fiction theme. All the weird shit's gone.
Actually I think the biggest example of this is comparing Rhythm Heaven to Wii Music.
