I'm honesty not sure how to answer this. I mean the guns you get later on are a lot better, but it's just a demo. I can't make you like the game, but all I can say is that it's a really good game that gets better the more you progress and explore the levels.

The game gets better the more you play. When more weapons, enemies and weapon upgrades are introduced, it gets better and more fast paced.
The second level shows this off really well.

I feel the reason for that is Glory Kills. Weapon mods being a secondary problem.
They make, by default, enemies into bullet sponges. And when you have to stick your shotgun down the throat of an imp to make it die in one shot, that's where the game fails. Especially when the shotgun has a tiny range to begin with.
Because the guns (all of them) need ridiculous amounts of time to kill most things. Killing comes fast once you have multiple weapons to use into a cookie cutter combo that will put a lot of damage in a short time. But making the player feel gimped at the start is a strange decision to make.
Now the gauss rifle in siege mode is retardly powerful once you get the mastery for it, but that means a large investment.

The thing I didn't like from the demo is it seems like the combat is built around finishers. If you don't do the finishers, the enemies turn into bullet sponges and you have to waste several shots to finish them off while they just stand there waiting for you to press F on them.
