They're basically not related at all. RE4's story is tied more to 2, and it's a shooty action game compared to RE1 being a classic survival horror. It's hard to compare which is "better" because they're drastically different, but both are fantastic either way.

The main antagonist of the entire series, introduced in the plot of RE1, is mentioned in RE4.
The good news is that RE1, original or remake, is not a long game. I mean, in classic RE you get bonus weapons for beating the game in less than three hours.
Also, I would not recommend RE5. It's meant more for multiplayer co-op and the AI is broken.

Alien Isolation plays all of its cards in the first four hours and overstays its welcome. I don't know if its worth the price tag.
Endless Legend and Grimrock 2 are excellent tho. If you've ever played Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights then Icewind Dale is very much like them except you make the entire party so it's more dungeon delving than story focused.

I guess, but Animal Crossing, at least to me, is more about customization than farming. You don't really farm anything; planting trees and flowers and stuff is purely cosmetic, except for perfect fruit which really aren't a very good source of income. Even the chores you do for neighbors (assuming that's what you're referring to as "core gameplay") aren't really important, they just kinda serve as a way to befriend your neighbors.
I would consider buying Stardew Valley if they had texture packs that changed the entire game, but the texture packs seem to just be for NPCs and such.

I've been on the lookout for the same thing. People often recommend Rocket League, but it almost feels like playing with bots. It isn't really social at all, the other players might as well be bots. Not MP enough.
CivV is singleplayer and not fun in MP. There are a few people that use hardcore balance mods and try to be all competitive and shit, but it's just ridiculous. Warhammer is imbalanced and has way less depth than the previous Total Wars, plus it's not really good for competitive multiplayer.
So, otherwise, I'm still on the lookout for a game like that as well. Multiplayer, competitive in nature, no trash talking and screaming children, not 100% reliance on a good team, fun gameplay, strategic or slower paced in nature.

Total war: warhammer can be fun but the multiplayer is a bit of a shit show at the moment. It has potential to be great but games rarely reach potential after release. I'm hopeful though.
Civ V is very slow in general, too slow for multiplayer IMO. the single player is decent early game but after a tipping point it is just dull clean up waiting for turns to finish.

Story in souls takes a backseat to the cohesion of the mechanics. You're still getting a story out of the game but it's presented in a very non-intrusive fashion. the game is still a game and it has very clear win and fail conditions. That's where the difficulty angle people sell it with come from.
I'd start with dark souls 1 or 3, but not sotfs. It's got the least going on of any of the games and unless you're already a fan you're not likely to get as much out of it if any. 1 is still a classic, if a bit rougher and 3 has the best visuals and most mechanic improvements
