Transgenderism is, in the unironic expression of the word, a meme that has spread to people who are trying to carve out an identity for themselves. Young men with confused sexuality, like you mentioned, or young men who have had no/bad luck with women, are especially vulnerable to falling for this meme.
Xenoestrogens in plastics and on average low testosterone levels have something to do with it, to be sure. These guys start thinking, "I'm already not very manly, maybe I should be a girl" or somesuch.
There's also an argument to be made that homosexuality itself is conditioned and the 'naturally occurring' form of it is similarly rare, like gender dysphoria.
