Winston is a support killer. He can jump to Snipers and Back Line supports, zap them to death and chase them if they try to run.
The biggest issue with Winston is that people think of him as a striker when he's really not. They're hoping to pop his ult and get a million kills while he apes out, but that's not what it's for. Its purpose is to absorb a ton of damage, pull fire away from teammates, and knock bad guys away from objectives. I see so many Winstons go bananas and try to punch one Bastion to death.

You probably are staying in the fight way too long. Try flanking from a high area (by grinding). Jump in, try for some headshots, and when then go to focus you, push them and speed boost the fuck out of there. Also, try jumping off the map to avoid enemy fire if you have to. It's easy to skate back up.

He's pretty fun to play, you just gotta use mobility to your advantage. Circle around, jump like an idiot, make yourself as hard to hit as possible since your lightning gun requires no aim on your part. Against more aggressive enemies with more health, or just against a turret, try laying down a shield and dancing in and out of it to make yourself more frustrating to kill. And leap out when your health is low. Knowing where health kits are on the map is a plus, and you'll often find someone squishy like Genji or Tracer going for the same thing, so win-win for you.
With ultimate, if you can knock some people into pits or into a corner, that's good, but most of the time I just use it as an emergency health button or to make people I'm harassing panic. Disrupt formations and knock away healers. Force them to focus on you and pray your team can use the moment to their advantage

Not really. If the other team isn't being as coordinated you can leap into their ranks and introduce Mercy or Zen to your giant monkey dong. Lucio is harder since he can sort of heal off your damage or run away but you'll have a better chance than peashooting at a crawl with Dva. Any lone wolves like Widow or Hanzo who think they have their perch to themselves are also prime candidates. Hell, especially Widow. You're on 24/7 fuck Widow in the ass duty if you play Winston so she never gets around to fucking your team in the ass. You can bide time both defending and attacking with your ult or use it as a get out of jail free card. You just can't get tangled with Tank killers or other tanks. He's extremely mobile and unlike Dva can move around, block damage, and attack at the same time. He's better at supporting the team with his shield and constant pressure to be in people's faces.
Really I'm surprised I haven't seen more Winston in pubs. The low damage turns people off, but if you can pick your targets wisely and know when to back off you'll be survivable as fuck.

He is the anti sniper/support. Symmetra has the highest win rate in the game, but he fucking destroys her. He is used to weed out the picks with his mobility and his ult is for scattering the enemy team when the camp up, though a giant rage ape really should be doing more damage than love taps.

Roam with him and hop in to pick off low health units. Leap into rage fights when your whole team is there and be a huge fucking distraction.
A good strat for taking out enemy turrets is to leap over it and drop your shield on it, it can't shoot out for a short time letting you zap it and Torb with ease.
If you find yourself in a fight with a high health character, jump around like crazy and don't let up for a second, drop shield. If they back up through it stay inside and zap em/reload.
Use ult to scatter the enemy team when they are all camped up, be a major fucking distraction.

He's good in an attacking diceroll situation out of spawn. He's useful in the "he's good for the team" kind of sense. If you have competent teammates your tickle gun can actually be good for picking people off.

Winston's problem is that he's really only as good as the team he's on. If you team can push with you, and use the massive cc from your ult to their advantage, things will be great. A lot of people here who seemingly don't understand Winston or think he's bad are going about this game the wrong way.
Just because you jump in and don't immediately kill everyone you attack, doesn't mean he isn't good.
Your job as Winston is to get on the point, chase squishies, and get out. Then do it all over again once your shield is back up. Sometimes you'll pick off a Mercy or Widow, sometimes you won't, but you are causing PANIC.
As soon as they see the point is being contested, or their healer yells for help, you have 2-3 people looking to kill you. This is usually enough for the rest of your team to PUSH IN through a choke. You are a distraction, do your best to stay alive and be annoying, trigger the point as often as possible.
Just because you don't get gold medals for elims, doesn't mean you didn't win your team the game. Creating opportunities to cap is the most important thing in this game. The majority of the time my team fails to win is because everyone is too chickenshit to go in.

Mobility makes him harder to hit and allows him to attack from angles while still boosting his team.

Winston is all about bullying.
He can't make something out of nothing, but if your crew is good you can easily steal the show. If the team is afraid of your whole team and your team is aggressive then you can really shine.
However, if your team is passive and the other team starts pushing back on your bullying attempts you won't get much out of him. You can disrupt and hit and run if you're good enough, but don't expect to be the guy that turns the tides or controls the map without a team that likes to push.
