This is probably somewhat of an unwanted opinion in this thread, but I strongly feel like SNK's shortcoming with XIV is they fell for the typical 2d>3d transition trap in a series that has an established "look," which is using 3d as an excuse to go "all out" on detail. As a result, you end up with characters that look like they would never belong in a KOF game because they just wouldn't translate to 2d well due to the elaborate nature of their costumes or animations. I think that's one area SFV surpasses XIV: I could believe every new character (except Necalli) could have been from a 2d Streetfighter, but I'd never assume Sylvie, Xanadu, or the Bean Team was from KOF.

moveset-wise Terry has always been my least favorite of the traditional Fatal Fury team lineup, for that reason alone I don't think I've ever liked Terry as much as everyone else seems to.

As for Shun'ei, I like his design overall. Maybe it's the overuse of "modern cool accessories" that makes him look a bit too much, but without the headphones, necktie and folded up pant leg, he looks okay.

It's not his personality that bothers me, but his design and backstory.
One thing I liked about FF/AOF/KOF characters felt like they belonged in their respective eras, which made the games feel like they were happening NOW (well, then).
Then comes K' and his sci fi friends, and it really doesn't feel like 1999 at all and all the classic characters look out of place next to them. Had NESTS taken place in the actual future, I probably wouldn't mind it as much.

The only people in the Orochi and Nests main stories who like shingo are Goro (respects his perserverance, though considers Shingo's pride to be his downfall) and Saishu (recognizes his fighting talent, but in doing so, is also running a gambit to slap kyo's shit, which he will enjoy). Beni doesn't "dislike" him, but he mostly only thinks of Shingo as a joke. Chizuru seems rather neutral towards him. Everyone else related to orochi and nests either hates him or doesn't like being around him.
Oddly enough, everyone else either finds him either "alright" or "kind of annoying" at worst. Hell, I think even in-canon Mai offered to give Shingo advice about shiranui flames, but he refused (like a dumbass), hoping to make them on his own.

Antonov's build reminds me of the bosses from Street Smart, which precedes the original Fatal Fury (whose secondary name was The King of Fighters), and apparently a music track from that game made it to Fatal Fury as well.
Curiously the bosses in Street Smart appear to be named while the player characters aren't, but it's been mentioned often that the player character in a gi looks like Takuma's KoF self.

The problem is that nobody seems to understand anymore how to keep things simple. Just look at Kyo's current design vs. previous ones to see exactly what I mean, or look at most of Falcoon's MI designs. Everything is overdesigned and almost shows a Guilty Gear/ASW influence in how over the top and overly anime it is instead of using it as a base by tailoring the design to fit in the series. Using Street Fighter as another example, Rufus and El Fuerte are going to be footnotes and nobody likes or cares about them partially because their designs are dumb and they don't look like Street Fighter characters; or you go the opposite direction and look at Abel who's exceedingly bland and again is pretty much already forgotten in a sense. Bitch about V but (hair aside) Laura's a pretty good design that strikes a good balance between unique and simple and she's someone I can see sticking around because she feels like she belongs in the series compared to most of the other new characters from SF4 and SF5.

She actually wasn't that interested in him at first until then, so it was kind of cute. She is pretty basic even here, but compared to KOF, it's a lot more in the favorable direction. She's still the sexy charismatic ninja girl we know and love on the other hand. Her endings range from silly to cute.
In KOF, she's just really annoying. All of this "I'm a girl, hear me roar, something something blah blah girls can fight too, sexism is outdated, where was my original personality blah blah chauvanist pig I'm so sexy look at my ass". Of course this was kind of consistent with a lot of girls in KOF, so you miss out on the charm points of their characterizations that come from the source franchises. As I said, everytime a character from another franchise gets into KOF, this kind of thing happens to him or her, but especially her. The mindset of KOF developers at the time wasn't to have proper treatment of characters (then again a lot of AOF characters tend to have questionable quality anyway), it was just to have a giant fanfic level crossover and then have its own original the characters fight with them, too. Keyword being fanfic. Think about that for a second and let it sink in the mentality, literature-wise, these crossover developers would probably have.
Look at Yuri in the cutscenes and in AOF2 and then compare her to KOF Yuri. So you would be about right in how they've made her really childish.

KOFXIV started development in early 2014.
Also, current development strategies have changed since last gen. So in the PS2/Xbox days, everyone was making their own engine because there was no readily available commercial engine you could license. That changed last gen with UE3 which became a huge success. The huge success of that engine led tons of companies to develop their own engines in an attempt to have something they could license out, but after that generation passed and this one came into its own, people realized that licensing out engines is a waste of money and started making their stuff proprietary. From the developer side, if you plan on making TONS of games over a long period of time, licensing an engine for every single game you make gets really costly. In the long run it's much cheaper to spend a lot of money right now to make your own engine so that in the future you don't have to spend shit.
It's not that there was anything preventing them from using it, it's just that it is no longer the smartest idea for all developers. It being free is great for smaller developers, but for a bigger team like SNK it's going to be more financially viable to do what they're doing, and making their own engine from the ground up means that they will eventually have a really great understanding of how it works and how to get the results out of it that they want and it will become a very unique experience from other games.

aren't we seeing exactly the opposite? Huge devs like Namco, Square and Capcom are all moving to licensed engines (specifically UE4) because it's easier and cheaper
Square had a hard time with their clunky Luminous engine (so the FF7 remake is using UE4) and Capcom seems to have completely dropped their Phanta Rei in favor of UE4 and even Unity

I don't know about the specifics behind Square and Namco, but Capcom went UE4 specifically BECAUSE they do not have long term plans anymore. Think about Capcom's history, they ran MT Framework for over a decade and used it in TONS of shit because it was so good for them. Then they dropped it because they wanted to make a NEW engine to replace it, Panta Rhei. Thing is, development of that started to take too long and the only game planned to use it is Deep Down which at this point might as well be abandonware. Capcom doesn't give a fuck, they don't even keep an art team on staff anymore because they don't make games like that. Everything in SFV was outsourced. Their goals are very different from that of SNK.
For Square with the insanely massive scope of their games, I could see them also being very reliant on outsourcing to actually get their shit made, and if you plan on outsourcing, having a common engine with tons of documentation is vastly preferable. Also a very different goal to SNK's in house development.

they don't bother using GGPO because they generally only think about the japanese player base so it wouldn't make a difference. It's a small country and connections are very good so their delay based netcode works perfectly fine to the point arcade cabinets are all online and do fine
