That would probably fit Takahashi's vision better, seeing as the man wanted an anime intro sequence to precede the 8 minute opening movie, but you can fix the game rather easily.
For all the plot plot plot, there is a FUCKLOAD of useless garbage. Subplots like Hammer, Elly's parents, the Thames, etc. Shit, all of Kislev is meaningless and doesn't even resolve it's own subplots. Elly's Gebler platoon should have just been the fucking Elements from the start. There is NO REASON why they couldn't bridge Id curbstomping Bart directly into Elly and Fri adrift at sea and meeting up with Yggdrasil II and bridging into Billy's story.
If they actually cut some of that endless talking and constant busywork, there would be time to design ACTUALLY GOOD DUNGEONS.

Much like Xenosaga or FFX, you're better just watching the cutscenes at 1.5x speed. You should at least try it, since the systems are unique and odd, but it's not the kind of game you should dredge through if you're not having fun.

The point was that the writer didn't like that he left a loose end in Trigger, Schala still being missing, but had to invent an entire game worth of content, with an even bigger threat than the first game, just to wrap up that one small conflict.
Or maybe the point was that you can't screw with time and expect sunshine and rainbows and zero consequences (unless your name is Balthazar)

Balthazar was stuck in 2300AD rotting alive, he literally got it the worst out of the 3 Gurus. The "bad stuff" that happens to Crono, Lucca, and the rest of the gang are butterfly effects from actions they themselves took on the timeline
New timeline Balthazar builds a 2nd Epoch, starts running around time himself, and doesn't suffer any such consequences for his actions.
Maybe it's just better planning on his part, but it's still annoying.
