i almost bought it but when i played more than 30 seconds of the demo i realized the HUD was cluttered mess and the battle system was hard to get into. it just seemed to be like pokemon but with more shit in the way, not including all the exposition i had to sit through.
i would even accept the sort-of emoji-tier ghost designs if the mechanics were a little more engaging and streamlined.
shame too, the in-game animation is smooth as fuck and the environments are very cozy and explorable.

The demo is literally the worst thing you can play to get an idea of the game for many reasons.
>Game puts you in an area with level 20 Yokai when the highest level enemies in the area are like 4 or 5.
>Since you have level 20 Yokai but a rank E watch, the hardest enemy you can encounter is Snartle who is scaled to your watch level so he's completely piss easy and you're actually overleveled for him as well.
If you had the D watch it would actually be a tough battle seeing as the D rank Snartle fight is like level 30 minimum.
>Soultimates recharge after every single battle instead of needing to build up to them like in the actual game which takes around 3 to 4 battles unless the battle is particularly long.
>No reason to do anything but spam Paws of Fury since it's a one-shot due to how high of a level you are and how you instantly regenerate Soultimate once a battle is over.
>Can befriend Yokai but can't actually put them into your party or even get any equips at all.

Here's a very simple example. Imagine I gave you a demo of Pokemon X and Y. Now imagine I set you up with a team of Legendaries level 50, and the length of the demo is from Viridian Forest ripoff until you reach the first gym. After every battle you recover all your PP and HP. You are given Pokeballs to catch Pokemon but you can't use the Pokemon you catch, and you're handed held items but you can't use them at all. Would you call this a fair representation of Pokemon?

overall the game is good, but really easy to the point you probably have to gimp yourself with the weapons if you don't want to stomp your enemies that easily, at least until around the end of the game. the post game content is where the difficulty starts appearing
the customization can be fun with the mixing of the robot parts of different sets,and there's a wide variety of robots, some of them are slight retools of the existent ones as well, and all of them have different color variations, the bad part is that those color variations are hard to get
if you are the type of guy/gal who likes mix and matching to create something cool looking, you'll probably enjoy the customization aspect.

at the beggining you will probably have a clown robot, but keep battling and you will get enough matching pieces

both anime and game are old though, only the localization was done last year, the game is a 2012 remake/port of a remake of a game from psp, with more robots and extra companions.
considering the last game in the series was released around 2012-2013, it's safe to assume its minute of fame is long gone

there's the mixing and matching of the robot pieces (head, left and right arms, torso and legs,(including the crotch) which depending of the type/class of armor, they will have different weight, and adding the type of weapon you use, it will make the robot slower or faster,
you can also "tune" the pieces, making them lighter or heavier, making your attack or defence higher or lower toodon't expect anything super detailed here, there's just "heavier, normal and lighter" for the tuning up.
battling will also raise levels of your character that controls the robot, the weapons the robot was using (which unlocks special attacks) and the robot's armor, leveling the character and the armor pieces will raise the attack and hp.
and there's also the core unit customization, basically you need to get components for your little robot and fit them in a square inside it, kid icarus upsrising style, to make it functional.leveling the character will make the square bigger, as far as i played the square expands like three times for each one
these things aren't available inmediately though only the mixing of the robot parts, the tuning up and core unit modifications appear later
also the battles are done usually in teams of 3v3, you can assume control of any of them any time,
because of the piece hunting, the game will be quite grindy once you start searching for specific parts

I did and had a lot of fun. Caught every yokai I wanted (had to abuse the system a lot because daily random chance with no trading is a good idea in a creature collector) and got like 60 hours out of it. The game was mildly challenging. The combat was simple yet engaging if you cared to do it. I look forward to 2 and 3.
A side note is that it is WAY TOO DIFFICULT/TIME CONSUMING TO RECRUIT AND BEFRIEND -ANY- YOKAI.
It shouldn't take 3 hours of my time to get a fuckin Noway. That was with best food (just reset a lot to save food) and a puppy yokai thing. There being no indicator of % like in DQM it was the most frustrating thing to have to deal with. Chance is chance but for common yokai it has gotta max at like 30% and 10-15% for uncommon ones.

A lot of the early ones do look iffy at the start, but some do evolve into better things overtime via level up or by fusion.
Example: People always poke at Manjimutt (man-faced dog) as a shitty design, but don't know that he evolves into something pretty darn cool when fused with another Manjimutt, which is pic related, at least in my opinion anyway.
