Yes, but so did a lot of other devs back in those days. You don't usually call pre-late-90s PC games "indie" because it wasn't really special back then. It was only after the market changed, publishers got bigger, PC games became less hobbyist, and more "serious business" that the name "indie" emerged to draw a distinction.
In short, yes, by todays standards, if iD released DooM shareware today exactly as they did in the 90s, then yeah, they would be considered "indie."
But retroactively calling them "indie" today would be like calling Frank Sinatra a "fedoracore" musician of the 40s.

I was really confused by the movement in Dustforce. Everything felt so clunky and awkward, but I stuck with it for a while and after a few hours it started to make more sense. I eventually got decent enough at it to start SSing levels without looking like a bumbling moron and the game finally clicked. Once you get the hang of dash rhythm and how to maintain momentum in general, the game becomes super fun.
It's a hard fucking game for sure, but it has a great difficulty curve and is truly satisfying to learn. I highly recommend going back and giving it another go, but I understand if you don't feel like the time is worth spending.
Some of the later levels are just brutal, but at the same time, they make you feel like a goddamn master for beating them.

I'm definitely not saying that indie devs shouldn't sell their games, but indie devs often now deal with influences outside of their own personal dream game development. They deal with "audiences," with "social media presence," etc. Indie games is big business now.

Let me get straight to the POINT here. Super Hexagon LINEs up with everything that is great about being an indie game. It's simple, you control a little TRIANGLE trying not to get hit by the incoming walls. I swear, this game is so good it that beating it should be a requirement on your resume to a job at the PENTAGON.
