Between the low sales and the shitty reviews, Nintendo got clear feedback (instead of covering their ears and pretending nothing went wrong) that nobody wants to play a 64 rehash for he millionth time. So now either the series can have a peaceful death without it degrading further, or they'll get their shit together and try something new for the next one.
Zero is the best thing that could have happened to the series. It's just a shame that it was a lesson Nintendo had to learn so late.

I maintain that Andross being in his robot form instead of his brain form during the final boss fight implies that he isn't dead and its a sequel hook. Then again it might be just wishful thinking.
