Anyone played through the demo yet? You can get it if you backed the game for 60 bucks (although I'm sure you can just pirate it at this point)

Overall, I was pretty impressed with the gameplay, the way Miriam controlled, her model, the enemies, the equipment and shard system and the level design.

The backgrounds are very disappointing, though, very bland looking, very dreary (and not in a good Castlevania-like way) and colorless. Not to mention they clash with the much more colorful and beautiful models. Is there a chance they'll fix them for the full release or are we stuck with the uglyness?

Actually, that is the idea.

If you have seen the concept art, you would notice that the castle is located in the middle of the sea, with a small port in front of it, with a long bridge connecting to the main castle.

Boat is the tutorial stage, while the pier is the first location Miriam arrives.

Just finished the demo.

Holy shit it is really bad, boring as fuck, all rooms looks the same and nothing interesting to see or do. No exploration feeling as rooms are just copy pasted.

But despite the game (well the demo) being shit, I am more concerned by the fact that people in this thread find "fun" or "pretty good".

Have you guys ever played the first 15 minutes of any Castelvania game? It is nothing like this.

This is how Castlevania has looked every since Symphony of the Night. Fuck, this is what the artwork for the damn game and the concept art promised, no, I'm not saying that the game needs to look as good as concept art, but it obviously should retain the visual characteristics that encompass it. Namely: The fucking colors that aren't washed out grey bullshit.

The picture that makes the comparison is fair, the picture on the left is from a sunken ship in Order of Ecclesia, and it looks much better than the ship in Bloostained

This is the concept art that was shown, this is what they said they wanted the game to look like visually. Even in the actual demo, the rose effect, the menu, the interface, the models and the animation when you get a shard stuck into you all clash with the backgrounds that look completely lifeless in comparison.

I think it's a bit early to judge. SoTN is a weird game. For me, it's one of those examples of bad game design that nonetheless works.
It does so by no giving a fuck and cramming a cornucopia of options. I ant to say most, but memory may not serve well, but at least a non-insignificant portion of those options come from items drops.

It really is up to the people who're making the game to do the same for Bloodstained. Iga has proven that he's willing to let the talent in the team get some leeway into introducing cool/weird ideas. Which is part of why SotN is endearing, you can feel how much everyone behind the game loved their craft, and tried to insert some ideas. Some of them ridiculous and useless, and all the more cool for it (the peanuts or size boosting shoes for one).

No enemy in the demo was actually threatening or even attacked really they were just there for you to kill.

The attack speed needs to get way faster though or at least a double attack. I liked that their was different weapons like kick attacks confirming foot jobs for foot fags.

Maybe it's just me, because I've played every single Castlevania game at this point. The series is dead to me. Nothing in any footage of the game looks new or interesting as a result. It's still just the same type of game since SOTN, which we've had a dozen of (rough estimate), except it looks slower and less stylish here. SOTN had serious style that no other Castlevania game has yet to replicate well.

Honestly, this game looks like it's targeting kids now who aren't very familiar with the series, or who just played the very last released games in it. Which is fine. But to me it offers no improvement over past titles.

Well I can't speak for the others but I've been playing the series since I had Simon's Quest as a little kid in the 80s, and I've played them all ever since. I'm fine with the way the game is shaping up, as it's the classic SotN style of gameplay, done in HD, well over eight years after the last proper entry in this style.

I get what you mean about it looking derivative, but that's kind of the point. Honestly there's probably a limit to how much they can innovate and experiment precisely because the game was sold to backers as a classic SotN styled experience. If it gets a sequel that isn't crowdfunded I think they'll get a bit more creative with the formula.

Good sequels are just more of the same.

But who cares about sequels. I actually want to play a reboot of SOTN. A pure hack and slash action game, no leveling up, no inventory / equipment, and no having to find / unlock skills. You start with everything, and there's a bigger focus on the spell casting system which was utterly pointless in SOTN, and a bigger focus on learning the mechanics via increasingly complex and difficult boss fights. All wrapped in a similar aesthetic that SOTN had, playing as Alucard, inspired by western mythology and classic art, etc.

Too good to ever be true. A man can dream I guess.
