NEO-scavenger is really fun. It actually makes survival seem rewarding, which a lot of other games in the survival genre seem to fail at. Also, the combat is the most tense and desperate shit imaginable.
Risk of Rain and Subnautica seem to be in just about everyone's wishlists/purchases.

Risk of Rain is jsut a fun little shooter with rogue elements and a lot of classes. The scale is what's really important here, becasue your character is piss small on the screen so the enemies are massive and super detailed, and the whole game is really good overall.
Subnautica is just "survival crafting game on Steam #478 BUT THIS TIME UNDERWATER" but it really uses the environment for everything its got, and the sleekness of all the stuff you can build looks cool.

I"ve heard its very close to being fully done. Your super advanced space ship crashes on a water planet in the super future and you have to scavange parts and learn how the wildlife work to survive. I don't know if an end goal already exists in game (I would assume getting rescued) or if it will be implemented on full launch. It really is just a standard crafting survival game but the water angle adds a surprising amount of depth and the game looks fucking gorgeous.

Miasmata has pitch black nights and because it's a simulation game, don't expect to see your fucking map at night if you don't have a light with you. Everything is rendered in world, no inventory screens or whatnot, you actually have to pull it out and look at it. Get lost at night without a light and hope you don't break your fucking face, tripping off a cliff.

In terms of gameplay, its more action-y but arguably smoother than the original. The level design probably isnt as good, but is still effective to permit different playstyles. And the Directors cut fixes boss fights.
Story characters, dialogue and sidequests range from solid to great.

Seconded on both of these. I prefer borderlands 2 though. The loot system is a arguably worse but the characters and gameplay mechanics are way better. The writing is garbage in both but if you're playing borderlands for the humor you should probably just off yourself now.
