The ending is the payoff. If you don't finish it it might be a complete waste of time.

It's not going to suddenly turn into DMC. Ico's only major problem is the combat, but I don't think a stylish rank would be appropriate for the game it's trying to be.
SotC does hint towards Ico, it's worth finishing if you care about the plot of either game.
