I wish I would have gotten into WoW after BC around 2007, but I honestly never got into it. I tried again recently, and playing it today without friends confuses me. Maybe MMO's aren't my thing.

I actually thought Black Desert Online was interesting at first but the horrible pop-in killed the immersion, it completely ruined the game for me, it's just awful to look at. And there is no way to fix it. Also the visuals are inconsistent and sometimes some effects will be omnipresent and sometimes everything will look flat and meh depending of the time of the day.
Games like WoW or Flyff or Guild Wars or even fucking Age of Wushu were way uglier than BDO yet I felt more immersed because the graphics were consistent, no pop-in every 3 seconds to remind me that I'm playing a video game.
My point is that MMO shouldn't try to reach graphic excellence but should do the appropriate thing: make it look good but don't overdo it, a recent good example of MMO graphics done right would be FFXIV or Skyforge.
