XII is my favourite by an absolute mile. I'm worried I've grown out of that type of game now, but I want the HD remaster.
I've played III, IV, VII, VIII, X, XII, XIII and Crystal Chronicles. I miss this (CC) sort of fantasy in games, giant toadstools, proper old school, MediEvil is the only similar one for me, love their settings. I think that's all I've played. Maybe some more spin offs, really can't remember.

Seriously, why hasn't Nintendo ported over Crystal Chronicles to the Wii U, they could've have the multiple screen gimmicks with several gamepads or 3ds.
Final Fantasy has progressive gone down since after 7 as each iteration gets more progressively "Japanese." It tried to hard to emulate the success of 7 while, while moving away from it signature interpretation of western fantasy setting.
9 was really nice though as it brought back some of the charm and humor that made pre-7 games special. But now, the feel full blown weeb. Complete with it male exposed midriffs and kawaii uguu females with no asses and uncanney valley. It completely absorb into all flash and no substance.
I can't even get remotely excite for 15 anymore. I don't care enough to hate it. It not the same series anymore.

Setting up gambits and allowing the player the freedom to act on their own was one of the best decisions Square ever had though. It's the most mechanically open game in the series, affording you pretty much unlimited playstyles.
They then proceeded to fuck it all up with XIII being an automatic snoozefest simulator.
The deficit of strong enemies to use this robust system is its only major flaw, but weak mode also completely fixes that too.

FF11 was a weird game to play, especially in its hey day. A major part of it was waiting for your TP to slowly build up. Then each party member had to utilize their weapon skills and magic spells in a certain order to maximize damage.
Imagine playing FF14 and every fight was auto attack for five minutes straight and then everyone had to coordinate their skill chains properly. Then repeat until the fight's over. For normal enemies, one skill chain is typically enough to end the fight. If one person fails their skill chain then it's pretty much over but a party member can also rely on their two-hour special to save the day. Also, imagine FF14 with no sprint, chocobo taxis only and at ridiculous prices, you move half as fast, and ALL of the maps, even the cities, are three times larger. It was the SLOWEST game I've ever fucking played. I quit at around Lv.30 after playing for three months.
That being said though, it felt like one of the most realistic games I've ever played. The size of townships and cities actually made sense. The shear size of the world was ridiculous to a fault but the whole game really felt like a living, breathing world. FF14, on the other hand, feels like a caricature of FF11. I don't mean that as an insult though; as much as FF14 holds your hand, at least it doesn't take a whole fucking day to walk from Bastok to the desert just to level up. And god forbid you die without setting up a return point. You know the achievement Kindness of Strangers in FF14? That would have actually meant something in FF11.

Current XIfag here, the game actually shifted away from that hard after Abyssea and we're back to SC's and MB's again. Some bosses right now are killed almost entirely by BLM MB damage because of how good it can be, and the new class of superweapons are centered specifically around the ability to create a lv4 skillchain.
Gearing also got a ton more interesting now as well, with accuracy and magic accuracy actually meaning something again. Haste caps are met basically automatically now with gear, but you can't just go happy with DA/TA on your melee gear unless you're meeting enough accuracy requirements.
I'd posit that the combat and gearing still has leagues more depth than any MMO out there currently.

In sky/sea/etc., if you were losing to a boss, it meant you needed to rethink your party composition and strategy.
With all the geas fete mobs, if you're losing, you're either not doing the specific gimmick the fight requires or you need better gear. It's just a fucking gear treadmill now. I couldn't even do 90% of the Reisenjima geas fete mobs because I simply didn't have high enough ACC to even hit them. And every fight is timed, I don't know how many fights were lost that could have easily been won if we didn't have a scant 15 minutes in which to finish. It's just a DPS contest now, do enough damage before the time is up or you lose.
Also, I hate how fucking useless jobs that aren't PLD, RNG, SCH, GEO, BST, BLM and SMN are. Two-handed melee is near useless because everything has awful AoE that kills you instantly and keeping up with that is a massive drain on the WHM. SAM is useful for self SCs for BLM to MB but even then you can fight half the shit out there because you're dead after one AoE move.

Also geas fete mobs punish you for having more than one party where past content encouraged more people participating.
Increased hp/ark/def for every person past the ~7th, so it fucks people without the best gear even harder. You can't just get 12 people instead of 6 extremely well-geared players, you won't even scratch the thing. You basically need a static of 6 well-geared people to reliably do this content and it just sucks for people who aren't butt-buddies with LS leaders or don't have good gear in first place. I got tired of being left out for the fights that dropped gear I actually needed because we'd only take 6 people for the fight.

I've played IV at least twice for each re-make. It's fun.
I've been playing the games in order, so far I did 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. I skipped 3 at the time cause I couldn't find a way to play it, now I think I'll just emulate a fan translated Famicom ROM. inb4 the Steam version, fuck off, I'm only interested in the original game. I'm really excited to finally ditch 2D Final Fantasy and make a leap to 3D FF with 7. Is 3 really worth playing or should I just leave it in my backlog so I can get into the 3D ones finally.
