The art of battle is akin to directional combat but not easily compared to m&b. Your direction (stance) is both the direction you will attack and defend.

People just don't understand the concept of contextual realism.
If we made a medieval narrative that had fantasy elements, that wouldn't suddenly allow for alien spaceships or laser rifles because "well it's not realistic so who cares!". Elements of a narrative that diverge from expectations need to be contextually justified or suspension of disbelief is lost.
Nobody expects the laws of physics to stop working in a medieval fantasy realm, because that hasn't been justified. They expect some form of contextualized magic to allow for people to fly or gravity to reverse or fire to not burn. If they just happened without context, suspension of disbelief would disappear.
This concept is why we can allow for ahistorical ideas like women warriors when they're justified as part of the narrative or for the sake of player choice, but inaccurate or implausible elements like viking horns and boob plate fall flat.

Most HEMA competitions that I've been to have men and women competing against each other. There are usually 5 men to every woman but they still compete, and win against men a lot of the time. You need to be generally physically fit to do well but strength doesn't factor into it too much, so men and women have a fairly equal playing field.

You're saying that as if dueling skills can't be transferred into large battles. Endurance plays more of a roll and men are on average better at that but women can still do well in this area. You don't need considerably more strength to lift a shield and spear and there are situation that aren't line but more spread out and individual dueling skill comes more into play (geurilla warfare, skirmishes, urban combat etc.). I don't see how training and skill couldn't overcome most disadvantages women have in a battlefield scenario.
