Metapods can't fight predators so they appear to have faces on both sides so they can't be attacked from behind. You know, it's common sense.
Based on it's shape and Butterfree's shape (and the eyes) the one of the left is probably 'the front', but based on the way insect eyes work and the fact it's a cocoon I'm not sure any of that matters anyway.

The point of these thread was originally for people to share sprites they genuinely interpreted wrong, then for fun some people forced themselves to see sprites in other ways so it would be humours to think that anyone would see it that way.
Now threads are a mix of both of these so sometimes you'll come across genuine mind-blowing stuff and sometimes more light-headed "jokes".
