Yes, 7 for just Fire Emblem in the west is a great start. 6 needs a patch and it's a little difficult for newcomers but 8 is way too easy even for a Fire Emblem game and it might give off the wrong impression. 7 is a good middle ground.

I hear bad things about the game also it's a sequel to Path of Radiance. Speaking of that game, it's also another good one to start at.
SFA3 may have it's issues but the sprites were always so colorful to look at. Same with Darkstalkers and the Vs. series.

Combine those keywords and knock yourself out. There is also the Ugoira2GIF Chrome extension to download these with since they are just uploaded as a series of PNGs if you tried to Right-click Save As normally (the site animates them in Java).

Radiant dawn has great maps and gameplay.
