Nah, Nintendo just thought WiiU was going to sell itself off the Wii name and make bucketloads of bank.
If WiiU released a year earlier, it would have. It released when PS4 and Xbone were being talked about. People had the "wait and see" approach of "But what if PS4 is waaaay better!"
If they released it in 2011 with Skyward Sword as a launch title minus waggle and basically heavily promoted it as "PS3 graphics at 60fps" it'd have done very well.
Good concept, good enough price, good first party games, but poor timing and marketing.
NX will have Hungry Nintendo back. I expect some massive marketing hype and campaign with a big launch this time.
