Meeting a pair of random noobs when I was just starting, one of them said something about going on an adventure to a high level place and it caught my interest, we got into a party and went to Ellinia to ride the ship while talking random bs and just being silly, we finally got on the ship and we just messed with the high level people and jumped around happily, excited to see new lands, and then suddenly, we all got murdered by the Balrogs and started laughing, we didn't have any money to buy another ticket so we just forgot about going on adventure, we didn't add each other as friends because we had no clue on how to do it, it was the last time I saw that pair, it only lasted for a short while, but it remains as one of the most magical and happy moments I've had in a game.
I think one of them was an Archer and the other had something related to Kingdom Hearts in her name, wonder if they kept playing after that.

I was relatively new to the game when there was a maple anniversary event and I was doing the LHC quest solo with my shitty anniversary gear 1 kill at a time. I was playing a pally and they were super weak so my kills took literally forever but everything was fine until a guild crashed me and tried to get me to leave. Literally everyone but one of those guys was ksing me nonstop. This guy recognized that I was legitimately new, not some shitty alt, and tried to persuade his guild to stop. Currently it's messed up.
The game has two type of servers, regular and reboot. Reboot server most important difference is that it disallows trading and the cash
shop p2w items are available only with in game currency (which has a x5 ratio). Your best option is reboot no matter the conditions.
With that said, the game offers ~+100 hour content, grinding not included. Regular grinding is fast paced with no risks of death, so its
true challenge is just exp gain optimization. Previously party quests, the equivalent to dungeons, were the best exp gain method but
right now it's grinding. Good news is that grinding itself is open to multiple maps right now (there aren't definitive maps for certain lvls, as
grinding varies depending on your class).
Also, the game doesn't respect the holy trinity. It has only 1 tank class, maybe 3 support classes and the rest are gimmicky dpsers.

Heading to the local internet cafe with my two best friends, 'secretly' downloading and installing the Maplestory Client (back when it was like 300mb) and playing nothing but KPQ for 12 hours straight. I played an unfunded sin, which was a sweet and special kind of hell circa 2005.

Because Vanilla Maple gameplay is utter shit when it comes to how much EXP is needed to level, and how horrendously low the drop rate for items and the low amount of Meso you get. Say what you will about post-BB, but at least a normal player can actually afford potions without selling scrolls for months, and you can actually level once every couple days.
Vanilla Maple is filled with dark times, like being unable to hit shit that was your exact level(Jr. Neckis), one channel bosses that got snatched by a guild or two that you had to pay to enter or risk getting the guild to harass you for a month making playing impossible, drops are nonexistent, potions are even more nonexistent or expensive, the damage is so low that even with the best scrolled weapons you're lucky if you can fight minibosses on your own let alone areas that are 5+ your level, and so on.
There's a good balance you can have with Vanilla Maple, OdinMS was an example back in the day where it was like 3x the EXP rate or something and a 1.5x drop rate, and even the more recent ones that have 8x EXP/4x Drop are reasonable.

Truly there is no greater suffering. You were basically trading late game actually useful damage for mediocre mid-game damage. At least you could kill anything with any equipment as Fire/Poison Mage. Can't believe the poison used to be calculated off of the monster's HP rather than your own damage.
I remember getting a lot of 'fame' because I was playing as an Archer. Apparently this was something noteworthy at the time since it was one of the few classes you couldn't level up using hacks. I got to I think level 61 before I stopped playing and that took me a very long time to reach.

Everything about Masteria and it's expansions makes me depressed whenever I hear about it. The only good things we ever got from it were New Leaf City, Haunted House, and Crimsonwood Keep. The most interesting thing about Masteria was probably the CWK Party Quest which was basically a "raid" for Maplestory. It's something I'm surprised that KMS never seemed to try to adapt. Managed to hit 76 Chief Bandit. My two motivations were the Pirata(?) gear set which I thought looked fucking amazing and the comfort that Meso Explosion was the highest damaging skill in the game. (Pretty sure this was early on in GMS though, 4th job and pirates hadn't come out yet)
That feel when you were never really rich, so you couldn't fuck around with Meso Explosion outside of parties, but you were the star of the guild whenever content needed to be done and Meso Guard let you explore areas way out of your league.
Maplestory was just such a wild ride as a kid. Learning the social rules, getting fucked over in the free market, getting easy exp from Kerning PQ and Ludibrium PQ and then basically being out on your own once you were too high for PQ exp. And then an arduous journey training (read:grinding) around Orbis, Omega Sector and other areas until you hear the sweet 'ding' of 70. Making that long trek to Kerning and then the snow town so you could defeat the Dark Lord, earning your 3rd job and then becoming a lone wolf slaughtering zombies all day on your own channel. Finally getting a kill on the Balrog that appeared on the ship instead of having to hide in the cabin, AFKing in Henesys and getting fame simply for being a CB, making your first ever visit to Aqua Road when it opened, and desperately trying to be useful in Zakum parties.
Oh and never giving an inch when some scumbag Hermit tried to KS you. Assaulter + Savage Blows and good reaction times let you give as good as you could get. Fuck those niggas.

Loss of wonderment and being easily amused because of growing up.

A lot of people say that the game went wrong with the Big Bang update. The game is playable now with reboot, but it gets boring fast unless you love grinding.

I remember back when I started to play and I was getting tea bagged by blue mushrooms when trying to go on ropes while in the L Forest. I really miss all the areas that weren't meant for training but were meant for traversing.

Made it less social and over complicated things. Before it was simple, you went around killing monsters, did it with people, got an item and possibly did a simple scrolling job of it. Then they added more crap, like potential trying to get certain percentage based attributes then upgrading the items rank, then the Big Bang happened and what ever else after it which missed the point of Maple Story. A lot of classes just bled into one another, it became very high fantasy which lower tier jobs able to use flashy skills, and due to monster re-balancing there is less of a chance for interesting monsters like Gobies.
They should have just focused on releasing more content for anything but first job, maybe that hump transition from 2nd to 3rd job, when you finally hit triple digits, and of course when you get to 140+. Should have had some good party bonuses as well to make people want to party more because later on people tended to solo more and more unless there was a Priest involved.
Though what ever, the fun was had and now it is gone.

This, and right now we just got a major update to the game revamping 2 characters and adding another 3(?) chapters to the storyline, in addition to the stuff that was already out.
Plus, Project Burn is currently ongoing, which allows you to level up 3 times for every level until 150, so it's a good baseline. (Probably don't recommend it for new people who have never played through the first 150 before though.)

Outside of the title theme these two hit me very hard. They are very nostalgic which is funny because I started playing Maple in my 20's. It gives me the same vibes as Kirby's Dreamland music.

Tbh, with all the rampant botting Maple has seen recently, I wouldn't be surprise if I was the only actual player and everyone else was a bot.

They made it easier in the wrong ways like >Changing most of the maps to just be straight lines and generally simplified them even further which really killed Kerning and Ellinia something fierce.
>Made partying for bosses completely pointless unless it's something like the Chaos stuff, and even then you can solo Chaos Zakum and Horntail no problem.
>Adding a bunch of content aimed at level 30's and 40's when there's already a bunch of content for them and you can hit 100 in a day now so no one bothers going through most of them anyway but the higher levels are in desperate need of any training grounds not filled with damage sponges and not known as SDH, or filled with no safe areas.
>Wide variety of PQs but there's no reason to actually do anything but RnJ's robot room from 60 to 120 and then Dimension PQ from there since anything under 60 takes no time at all to clear.
Then they made it worse in other ways.
>Scrolling now requires you to use a bunch of scrolls that only have a 10% chance of working just so you can use a scroll from an Anniversary event that takes ages to get just so it doesn't blow up the item, and it doesn't guarantee the scroll working at all because 10% scrolls and 30% scrolls are garbage in comparison.
>Item drops out the ass but you can't actually pick up anything because it takes forever to even pick up an item(Cheat engines used to bypass this but the fact you need to use it in the first place is a problem) coupled with a huge reliance on pets to actually do it so you can actually make some money while you fight.
>Only F2P way to get pets is either grind out Maple Reward Points for a month and then grind more points to buy Water of Lifes every month on new characters or hope regular Hilla drops one(Haven't seen one in 140 kills)
>No one bothers socializing since you can do everything but SDH and some of the bosses solo.
At least the leveling is actually reasonable now, I have a bunch of 140s everywhere.
