The problem is that the changes in the Youtube algorithim essentially killed it as an income stream for a lot of people.
At one point Youtube paid per view. This meant independent animators could make a high quality few minute animation and post it on Youtube and make decent income.
Then came reply girls. Youtube needed to create disincentive for these videos to be made. So they changed the payouts to be based on number of minutes watched instead of by view.
It's why you see so many "let's play" videos, real life videos where people talk about shit shooting a real camera at a couch or something, and "reaction videos" where people watch some other form of content: They are much lower effort to produce a lot of video.
This is why a lot of youtube animators stopped posting new content after early 2012 or drastically slowed down the amount of content they posted.
