Please somebody explain the combat system of this game to me.
It doesn't matter what configuration of combat tactics i use, every single time I get into combat, my companions stand around and do nothing until I fucking tell them to attack.

As I recall you can actually set tactics, tell the AI what to do under what conditions. (i.e. 'if Alistair is under melee attack use X spell' kind of deal) Maybe something is fucked there?

Also don't use tactic for anything apart from auto-potion unless you want your mage to blow your shit up with their Fireball of doom.

The ai isn't perfect. Some times they'll get stuck on things or not attack at all which is why I do things manually most of the time.

Your companions use spells and abillites based on their tactics, the more tactics they have set the mess micro managing on your part.
I managed to have it basically auto running when I last played it and just managed positioning and maybe used some skills.
Tell you what pisses me off, you get great incredible weapons and items moments before you finish the game.

If playing on normal, set all party tactics to initiate the attack on the leader's target, not nearest. Example (haven't played in a while so spell names might be wrong):
Enemy: targeted by party leader
Use: Fireball
Or:
Self: HP < 30%
Use: Health Potion(smallest first)

First time over I never found Sten, killed zevran and didn't do the mages tower until insanely late so didn't have wynne for most of the game.
It was fucking difficult but I really appreciate that the game didn't hand hold and you could royally fuck up your party like that.

mages are so hilariously OP in Origins, the best party is mage PC, morrigan, and the rest are just meatshields. you can open a fight with two simultaneous spells that combine, favorite is paralyze explosion, or if it's a big room or a strong enemy, you can open with storm of the century.
after that you can start hitting the most powerful mobs with spells like crushing prison, hit debuffs and such, and when they start closing in(prefably through aoe firestorm) you can hit them with fireball, which knocks most enemies back. then you can crowd control most with cone of cold that freezes pretty much everything
after this, if you're arcane warrior, you can turn on about 5 passives that turn you into a tank and whack the remaining enemies with your sword

While traveling you will have a random encounter where you see some old couple talking about a baby while looking at a space crater of some sorts. Loot that crater and you'll find meteorite. Finish Warden's Keep and the merchant will establish a camp/market at the Keep with his brother, a blacksmith. That brother can use that meteorite to craft a greatsword/longsword, which probably is the best in the game.
