I actually bought this game for 60$ on release and I wasn't disappointed, it's a great game.
What I think happened is what happened with the last mirrors edge, keep in mind the last mirrors edge priced dropped fairly quickly and is still considered a commercial success.
Everyone who bought it is playing it, and will continue playing it for years to come(speed runners and whatnot). The rest will probably say SJWs or Anita Sarkeesian ruined it without actually playing it just like the people who said the first game sucked because of the forced inclusion of a weapon system, but the real mirrors edge fans will ignore this and keep trying to beat the game as fast as possible.

Making a soft reboot/sequel of an 8 year old game that hardly anyone bought in the first place and also not really marketing it at all is probably what killed it.
Unlike what /v/, twitter and tumblr would have you believe most people don't really give a shit about any of this social justice shit (whether its supporting or opposing it) and don't really care that much about appearances of characters either. There's instances where it can have an effect, but they're very small.
This game didn't fail because it somehow pandered to SJW's, it's because its a game concept nobody gives a SHIT about and EA didn't actually tell anyone it came out. I fucking found out yesterday it had come out 2 weeks ago and absolutely no-one I know has been talking about it or playing it.

Sorry but I find Anita being involved very hard to believe, the gameplay is the same like 1 but better and more fluid with new gadgets that adds more layers, its not simpler or harder just the same level of difficulty as me1 unless you're gunning for top scores on time trials and dashes

I think it just a passion project where dice just wants to make something different not involving guns, extreme polar opposite of bf.
I'm just happy as a big ME fan that I was lucky enough to even get a sequel, I doubt I will ever again since the fanbase is so small but I'm glad I got a second game, loving it.
This is me heavily speculating but I think someone fought hard to make this happen and ea just let them have it since dice has brought them so much money with BF and EABF, its also why I think they managed to convince EA to make the next bf a ww1 game, turns out it was a good choice for ea, for bf1 at least...so far.
