The Vita deservedly failed because most people who could afford one did not want one, and the lack of desire has nothing to do with its library. (It also has nothing to do with memory card prices - hopefully you weren't thinking that like an idiot).

Don't get me wrong, there are kids that have a Vita, but they are a minority. Even in Japan, the 3DS is mostly a kids machine. Capcom made MH Stories for them basically. If you go to Japan today, you will only see Otaku or kids with 3DS consoles.

Probably about the same, Capcom made it on the 3DS to reuse assets and lower development costs because they are extremely cheap, and Monster Hunter isn't really a game of labor, but rather, one that will sell because of brand power. The next console iteration MH game will likely look like shit too.

The future of handhelds belongs to the Chinese. The market is becoming too niche because of phone gaming, and soon it will only be profitable for small manufacturers making systems like the JXD S7800 and the GPD Win, which use android and windows respectively and therefore require no developer support. I foresee handheld gaming in the future consisting mostly of emulators, indieshit, and whatever else has low enough requirements to run on an android or handheld windows machine.
The Vita really is the ultimate handheld game console, but unfortunately the market is shrinking and Nintendo is going to be the last one standing before they too peter out. Most people are just too obsessed with their phones to carry around a separate device for gaming, even if the phone experience is inferior in every way.

Biggest problem with 3DS has been wear and tear on the circle pad. Games like Smash and MonHun have caused some to break, I replaced mine midway through playing HM4. Hinges are a lot sturdier than the DSLites and DSi models.

I want to think so, but the reason the phone industry is stagnating is because everyone already has a phone that's good enough to run whatever mobileshit is out there. They're content and complacent, and the phone industry is now moving into a replacement market the way computers have been for at least a decade.
It's possible that Nintendo and Sony could really shake things up by doing an aggressive spearhead back into the handheld market, but I think Sony is less likely to, which hurts me to say because I like the PSP and Vita a lot more than the DS and 3DS.

Personally if someone wants said game for the portability, more power to them, but that the game(s) are also available on another platform isn't a strong selling point to get someone to buy something if they have an alternative.
I have a thing about the time of releases. If the game is a few to several years old and is being ported, it doesn't really seem to matter at that point. Your examples, Dragon Quest on 3DS is worth it, even as someone who owns and beat both VII and VIII on PS1 and PS2, I'm still getting the 3DS remakes for their added features.

This. Memory cards are expensive as fuck, and because there's not a ton of physical games being released (due to low demand due to a low userbase), most people either have to import for physocal copies (if there are any) or buy digitally (which can fill up that memory card quickly).

Ignoring the fact that the 3DS gives awful hand cramps, the screen is super low quality [worse than all monitors past 2000] and the resolution is awful. AAA titles have grown too costly to create, so to limit them to a single platform that hasn't even taken off yet drives publishers/developers away. On the flipside, it's too costly and convoluted for smaller and indie developers to make good games (system sellers) for it.
Entry price was also too high in the west, which is why only Weeaboo studios felt comfortable to commit to the machine.

I've got a massive collection of physical games, but I actually do hope after the system is officially dead it gets a good crack like the PSP did. I would love to have non DRM copies of digital only english games. Would also be great to see some Japanese games get translated like PSP games have been.
I wished the same for the 3DS, but I'm mad they didn't wait for the 3DS to be officially dead.
