Which is just a whole level of incompetence. If you're not going to do that, then don't bother showing it off. You know what other series doesn't animate mouths? Souls games, which people love. But the camera never cahnges when you talk to people, so it's much harder to notice. I didn't even notice until it was pointed out. They work around this limitation and make it not really a big deal. MN9 instead gives us regular cut-scenes which shove this limitation right in your faces.

Check out the original unreal pre-vis (pic & vid related). Even in the early stages, they nailed the atmosphere that was in the original concept art. Then look what happened. The lighting, effects, and shadows were stripped out of it. Everything that gave it personality, and made people want to back it --- gone.
Maybe throwing in ports to underpowered systems as stretch goals was what killed the game. Even the best looking games on 3DS look like absolute ass compared to PC/PS4/XB1. That should be so obvious that it goes without saying, but wouldn't porting a game to 3DS from PC/PS4 be an absolute nightmare?

1. Make General Audience games. Too many Japanese games pander to weirdo Otakus who want moe girls and panty quests. This is a total niche. Make games that can appeal to Westerners and Japanese alike. A lot of the biggest Japanese games of the 80's and 90's were set in Western locations (eg. Resident evil series). They didn't scream "this is a Japanese game for japanese people who love anime".
2. Promotions. They spend nothing on ads. and you need this to survive.
3. Reasonable budgets. Stop chasing the AAA razor thin edge. Only do that for BIG games that are guaranteed to sell. Go with modest budgets and aim for 1-3 million in sales.

Kickstarter and funding kickstarters is fine, with the exception for a few more rules to make it more foolproof, but for the most part the problem is lack of research and reading up on things that screws people over.
Generally, it's both incredibly retarded and a waste of time to try and make scams on Kickstarters UNLESS you're a big name or got a famous trademark behind of you. The chance of succeeding is generally pretty low, even more so when the goals are set above 100 000 dollars.
Not many did their research on Inafune Tim Schafer which bit them in the ass.
To be fair to Tim Schafer though, his biggest problem is that he's fucking awful at handling money, time and budget rather than being someone that tries to scam people.
Though he's still a piece of shit human being otherwise.
Anyway, always do your research. Kickstarter isn't a pre-order site, it's a DONATION you're doing, to a project that you want to succeed and it's thus up to you to do the legwork. You can't expect Kickstarter to do the research for you and it's incredibly hard to make it foolproof legally.
Things to consider is background and experience for example, a lot of videogame kickstarters are done by inexperienced people. That's not to say you should never donate to them, but keep it in mind when you make your decision and remember that it's very likely that the game will see delays and possibly have to cut out features and promises for a multitude of reasons. Not because they're cheap and lazy necessarily, but because something that might sound fun and balanced in theory can prove to be boring and shit in practice.

It likely cost up to 10 million. Games are expensive. Comcept and Ini-creates seems to have a decent size of employees.
The ports probably ate the most of the budget. Each port costs time and money to make. The 3DS port needs a new engine and has to be totally rebuilt. So you're making effectively TWO or more games. And then you have fees to get your game sold on these platforms.
4 million can be blown in just one year with 40 employees at 100 K each. This game cost 3 years, and much of the team likely cost way more than 100K each.
