What are the best musou games on PS4 and do any of them have an overarching storyline you wouldn't be able to pick up on if you haven't played the previous games?

Doesn't Dynasty Warriors just restart every game? I swear I've played the Yellow Turban Rebellion half a dozen times.
They just add more fictional spice to it each time, and give more branching "what if" paths

DW Gundam Reborn was great.
DW Gundam 2 regarded as one of the worst ones in the series as far I know, didn't play it tho.
I ordered just SW4-II for 21 bucks shipped on gamefly today. Pretty good price WO3U is the best one, honestly. I'm thinking of buying it again on PS4

GB3 is more of a brawler with heavy customization. A bit of samey gameplay wise, but not really a parallel to musou.

WO3U for most content or DW8XL for most polished gameplay. Most of the game retell the same story with a few tweaks here and there so you don't miss much, but WO games do have overarching storyline but not like it matters because it's a crossover game and only 1 has good story anyway.
I don't play the anime musou so I don't know about them though.

Kinda. I mean, they are based on historic events but each game offers something new like building on top of missions with hypothetical "what if?" scenarios. I think DW8XL added brand new Lu Bu campaign.

Samurai Warriors 4 Empires is pretty comfy and fun.I still need to take over half of Japan.I have it on Vita, so I can imagine it'd be a more enjoyable experience on the PS4 for you OP.

SW4E is probably the best Empires out there, but it would have been so much better if it wasn't because of the hallway stage designs from 4 vanilla. Seriously, it makes the fights a lot samey and easier to get bored compared to the DW ones.

I'm not entirely sure, but as far I recall 1, 2 and 3 had one crossover story glued together, to point that 3rd game removed classic TV show based stories and just put you into crossover action right out of the bat (without letting you to change VA to JP for 2 stages)

Is it worth getting the ps4 warriors orochi if I already played the xbox360 version? I only did one play through back then so I never explored many of the extra missions which needed relationships built for them for example.

I honestly wouldn't mind something like a skill tree for characters. Something unique for the specific officer.
Like Ma Chao for example could have more unique skills whilst on a horse and maybe even the ability to jump kick an enemy rider and steal his horse.

WO3U has the most content, and is solid as a musou game overall, though it's lacking in moveset variety in some ways.
DW8XLCE has the best gameplay, and shitloads of content, though not as much as WO3U
Pirate Warriors 3 is an amazing musou as well, with more moveset variety than the other musous, though it has a few frustrating grinding points

If you like samurais get Samurai Warriors 4, don't get 4-ii, only add 1 new character and the story mode is way worse. SW4 is the best in the series, also the prettiest musou out and it have a new combo system, that is kind overpowered but makes the game more fresh
Dynasty Warriors 8 XL is also great, probably the musou with the most amount of content, a lot of characters and weapon switch
One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 is also very good, great replay value and the cast is actually kinda good and feel more unique than in the other games, get if you like the manga/anima
But for me the best "musou" game out ther eis withouth any doubt Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi, because its 100% in japanese I don't understand one word of the story mode, but the gameplay is just marvelous, I've put 140 hours into it, got my platinum and I'm still playing, its just THAT good
