What they have actually said is that to not expect a new Metroid game before the next console.
Read a lilte better. "Not being in development" isn't the same as "abandoned franchise". They won't make a new metroid game before they have something good to make with it and it's the best for the game. Hating for a game that actually will come out just because it's a spin-off is a bit stupid.
