The bosses for the most part I felt were appropriately challenging. It's the grinding for money to get weapons or doing a particularly inane requirement (which you would have no idea even existed unless you looked at a guide) to unlock a weapon, all of the others are a bit more lax but drakengard really taxes your patience.

You should get a good chunk of them by just exploring the levels. Some of them will require you to do ridiculous shit in the expedition mode, for them I suggest using a guide after you get to the point where you need all of the weapons. If you are a badass you can also play the mobile game which has hints about weapon's whereabouts.

They work differently in that one though, the partners in Nier just attack every once in a while when they feel like it.
And tehre's nothing to hinder in the first place, most normal enemies will most likely be for quests and EXP again and the bosses are the ones where you have to actually do something and can at least try combos. If it's like the first Nier, the combat will be there, but it won't be the most challenging and deepest thing ever

The most promising thing about the game's AI, to me, was the PSUnderground footage, because completely outside of a fight, Taura was jumping around showing off some attack mechanics, and as he would swing, 9S would start shooting at whatever wall was in the direction of those attacks. It leads me to believe the AI is closer to W101's, where 9S becomes a proxy attacker who responds to your inputs with his own, rather than a fully-fledged AI that will fight enemies while you run and hide like a bitch.
But we have no confirmation either way. What we DO know is that 9S isn't always around, and sometimes you'll play as him rather than 2B. We don't know for sure how his AI works yet, whether its behavior is user-pattern-controllable or user-input-sensitive or whether it just plays the game.

What I hope for (hey, this game is already dream-game status in so many ways, why not shoot for the moon?) is a system that uses the AI's strength to account for difficulty.
So on Easy mode, 9S will seek out and attack enemies on his own, say.
Then on Normal mode, 9S will only attack when you attack, but he will choose his own target
Then on Hard mode, 9S will will attack when you attack, and his target will somehow be set by your actions (last enemy you locked on to, last enemy you took damage from, whatever)
And then on Very Hard mode, 9S chooses his target the same way as on Hard, but his attack patterns are much more closely controlled by the player (every player action has a corresponding 9S action, so you can manipulate him entirely via your actions).
I'm not sure they'll do that but there are some hints of a system like this in what we've seen, and if you want to make a game that's challenging but also accessible to poor players skilled AI is a more clever way of doing that than Mommy Mode or making enemies fragile as glass and the player an attack sponge.

The original Nier is a slow paced open world action RPG about a father trying to save his daughter. The dark/depressing setting, interesting characters, great music, the way the game experimented with its mechanics and the general atmosphere are the strongest aspects of it. A lot of these are because of Yoko Taro, the director, who is crazy as shit.
Automata is a sequel that is being directed by the same guy, has the same composer, but is this time being developed by Platinum Games, meaning likely on top of the great story, characters, music and atmosphere, it'll also have great core combat.
If you're a Platinum fan, don't go into Automata expecting a typical Platinum game because that's not what it is, and the devs themselves have said that.

Kinda. That was an old shitty port made by a different company. SE upgraded it (made it run on new hardware/OS, and at high res) when they re-released it on Steam, and then put it on PS4 as well.
Since then, they've ported to PC FF8, FF9, FFX/X-2, and FF13/13-2/LR and the DS/Android remakes of FF3 through FF6.
Now all we're missing are FF1 and 2, but the old, now broken Android (iOS?) and PSP ports were kinda meh. I'd rather take the old NES graphics and better music (though slow menus), or the GBA versions... probably why SE hasn't bothered fixing them.

Not true. I mean, I'm sure you're 100% right, but many Platinum games have made exploration a very large part of what they're about. Bayonetta 1 and 2 were both full of goofy side missions (collecting pieces of chests within a time limit, hunting for hidden crows, etc) and the games are actually somewhat interesting in making upwards of 60% of the fights in any given level totally optional; you hunt the level LOOKING for secret areas, not because they have chests or power-ups, but because they have bonus fights which help your score (plus extra challenges like Alfheim portals and whatnot)
Plat are also somewhat infamous for mixing in secondary styles of play and minigames; on-rails shooters, shooting gallery minigames, even sidescrolling platformer and top-down sections in some of their licensed titles.
It's not like Plat's games are rounds of Bloody Palace punctuated by cutscenes.

That seems clear, but I don't think most people will miss it. Pure Plating was just a secondary challenge for added replay value on short games, I doubt most players will miss it in a long game with multiple endings that encourage repeat playthroughs on their own.

This is true; on the other hand combat is 90% of what we've seen in trailers and press materials, it's fairly clear that combat is something they're very proud of with this game and something that's taken up a large part of the development time. You don't showcase non-prominent features.

The gameplay is dull and only thing you'll get out of it is a somewhat interesting storyline accompanied with some decent OST. If you can deal with this and have some time to kill, it's worth it.

I was never trying to say that Nier is completely incompatible with Platinum, and I'd even say Plat are perfect for Nier because they also experiment with mechanics like you said. Though I'd say secret areas in Bayo 1 and 2 are a functionally different thing to open world structure in Nier.
Regardless, my original point was that Automata is structured like an open world game, something Platinum hasn't done before (to my knowledge) and the devs themselves have been pushing to make a point that it's a "Nier game made by Platinum" and not a "Platinum game".
