If anything, it was probably the Shieka who did the dirty work either in secret or not. There's always the possibility the royal family had no idea just what the Shieka did in order to keep the royal family safe.

I wanna know who the fuck thought it was a good idea to build a town right above an ancient cursed torture dungeon.
>>
Once a upon a time in Hyrule, there was a man of the Sheikah who lived in Kakariko Village who had the ability to see things that were invisible to the naked eye. With this ability, he enjoyed going to the graveyard to converse with the spirits of the dead. One day he met the soul of a man who in his past life was a member of a musical troupe where he would play the bongos. The man was so talented that people nicknamed him as Bongo Bongo. However Bongo Bongo had a dark secret in that he was a murderer who enjoyed torturing his victims. For many years, he killed people, going about the murders in a slow and brutal fashion until one day, he decided to sneak into Hyrule Castle and murder a member of the royal family and he was successful in doing so. However he wasn't successful in getting away with the murder and was eventually captured by Hyrule's Royal guard.. For his crimes, the hands he used to play the bongos and commit murders were severed, he was later executed by beheading.
>>
>>342210631
With his insatiable blood lust during his life time however, Bongo Bongo's spirit managed to remain tied to the world of the living instead of moving on to the afterlife, his spirit gradually grew more and more malevolent until one day, he managed to possess the Sheikah man he met in the graveyard. Using his body, Bongo Bongo proceeded to go back to his murderous ways and built an elaborate dungeon underneath the man's home where he would kidnap citizens and travelers in Kakariko and bind, torture and kill them. After many years of committing murders, Bongo Bongo's reign of terror would come to an end once again when his spirit was exorcised from the man's body by a young Impa and several others. Because of how immense the dark power of Bongo Bongo's spirit was, the majority of it had to be contained in one of the Sheikah man's body parts and removed. The spirit was placed within one of the man's eyes and removed from his head while the remainder was infused into a Sheikan made magnifying glass named the Lens of Truth for it's ability to see the hidden and the invisible, both were placed deep within the dungeon. Over time however, Bongo Bongo's spirit grew even more in power and started to transform the corpses of the people he murdered, turning them into redeads. To prevent the redeads from causing any havoc to Kakariko and Bongo Bongo from exerting even more power, a seal was placed by way of a monster named the Dead Hand. The Sheikah man's home was subsequently demolished and the hole leading to the dungeon was filled with water and turned into the well you now see today. Bongo Bongo remained sealed in the well for many years until one day, Link came along and broke the seal.
>>
>>342210706
After Bongo Bongo was first sealed, the Sheikah man was still feeling influences of the evil spirit's power within him as evident by his glowing red eye, feeling him with murderous thoughts, the man decided to leave Kakariko to avoid being driven insane by his power and going back to committing murders. One day, Adult Link meets a man in the ruined Hyrule Castle town who likes to collect spirits, this man is in fact the same Sheikah man from Kakariko. The bongos you hear playing in the music when you're in the building and the glowing red eye emanating from his hood is a reminder of his history with Bongo Bongo.

Continuing with the story, Kid Link journeyed through the now dilapidated dungeon to obtain the Lens of Truth infused with both Bongo Bongo's power and the Sheikah's man ability to see what was hidden in order to find his way through the Shadow Temple, during which, he kills the Dead Hand and breaks the seal keeping Bongo Bongo's power at bay. The spirit gradually started to regain some of his power and grew even more powerful over the course of time which went unnoticed for years. During the 7 year gap, Bongo Bongo's power evolved to the point that it become very overwhelming, his power seeped out of the well, making Kakariko's citizens sick and disrupting the atmosphere which caused a few small fires and corroded buildings. The town responded to this by sealing his power again only this time, the dungeon was also sealed up with rocks to prevent someone from getting back inside and breaking the seal.
>>
>>342210785
Several years later however, with the dark influence of Ganondorf's power emanating through all of Hyrule, Bongo Bongo's spirit managed to break the seal on it's own and mutate, taking on a physical yet blob like form. The spirit then rushed through the dungeon to escape it causing several fires to the buildings in Kakariko in the process as you'll see later in the game. He manages to escape to the Shadow Temple and used it's power to transform into a large and invisible human like form with the glowing red eye of the Sheikah man as it's head. Impa trekked into the temple on her own to try and seal the spirit once again however she couldn't see the creature and couldn't contain it's immense power and thus was mortally wounded by it. Link would eventually journey deep into the temple and with the sword of evil's bane, defeat the evil spirit once and for all and Impa would become the sage of shadow.

It wasn't just the spooky parts. Ocarina and MM both did atmosphere in a way no Zelda before or since has pulled off. I do think the N64's mix of strengths and limitations had an impact on that but it was something else too.

Everything about them just feels so mystical, legendary, and fairy tale-like. Like every new area you go to, you're turning the page of weighty old tome and it's creaking delightfully as you do it.

There's a difference between being scared and finding something spooky. Also, most people here played OoT and MM as kids. Good job outing yourself as a child.

The 3DS versions also adjusted the lighting so that most, if not all areas were brighter. That said, they still capture most of the atmosphere of the originals. You should be able to appreciate their eeriness without being "scared."

DEEPEST LORE
>>
My theory always was that the Hyrule Family took over the land the Sheikah lived on.

Some of the Sheikah rebelled the occupation, specifically the Man Who Could See the Truth. He tortured and killed Hylians in revenge for the occupation.

When his crimes were revealed, this caused a huge panic among the Hylians. They built the Shadow Temple as a prison to house him, and he was the first to be executed. Sadly, he was not the last, and the panic led to most of the Sheikah being killed.

Eventually they brokered a peace, and instead the Sheikah became the royal guards of the very people who slaughtered them.

But Ganondolf killed them all during the events of OoT
so he really did nothing wrong

The shadow temple most likely refers to the Hyrulean civil war.

Kakariko is most likely built on what used to be an old POW site, used by any of the factions. I don't actually think that the royal family are evil or that Hyrule is totalitarian.

Honestly? I think it started out they didn't have a plan for it, but as they kept making games it became their baby and it snowballed- Ideas formed, general story and a written language later, they decided to thread them together JUST enough to be sneaky and lay down some hints, but still be solitary enough to let the games stand on their own.

>torture is a viable way to extract information

It is not, if someone kidnaps the kid he either has a demand or has done horrible things with it, either way, torturing them will very rarly serve in retrieving the kid, because if it was an extortion you wont find the mastermind without the kid, and if it was a child abusing monster they would more likely give you false information to spite you as revenge for their demise by your hands once it becomes clear that the child is most likely dead.

If it was a simple retard that took a child, the simple threat of violence should make them cooperate, so there is only a tiny percentage of cases in which the torture might or might not yield actual useable information.

There lived an acorn wizard who used his powers of Acronmancy to feed himself.
However, he did not know that the acorns he was eating was embued with his magic
He began to grow lethargic as his home and village began to become overgrown with plant and tree life. His skin turned to wood, and he eventually became rooted to the ground. There he would remain, a great tree that produced Deku nuts, in a village of forest dwelling midgets.

Okay but think about this:
>SS Zelda had to have a lot of COURAGE to do what she did.

What with following Impa through all those temples, and then seal herself away with the hopes that Link would wake her up in a thousand years.

>Groose was lead by WISDOM under the aged and wise eyes of "Granny".

Keep in mind that airhead had to build that confounded contraption and rail system what blew up Demise with bombs, and he matured quite a lot from the beginning of the game to the end.

>Link had to obtain more POWER.

He was a weak little shit what slept in a lot, even Impa yelled at him for not being what Zelda needed him to be. The link we started out with was by far much stronger than the one we fought demise with.

Power isn't evil, it's how you use it.

Nah, it and MM had the best atmosphere in the series by a long shot. It was a great balance of grand, light-hearted, adventurous fantasy and extremely dark, eerie and melancholy fridg-horror shit.

Keep in mind that Koizumi was also around during their development. I believe he was a large contributing factor to that, along with Kondo's great tracks.

Since we're talking atmosphere in this thread, anyone have a gut feeling that BoTW will be absolutely amazing in the gameply department, but will utterly fail in the atmosphere, immersion and music department?

An ambient soundtrack worries me and these enemy designs are already giving me SS vibes again for how cartoonish they look. I'm also concerned that the story will be significantly dumbed down and cheery to make up for the free will and exploration of the game. Also because this is neo-Nintendo, and neo-Nintendo doesn't like to challenge its players in anything now, story or emotional complexity or included.

Fuck that's a blast from the past.
>>
>>342236882
Alright, it's been awhile since I've played it, but I'll try my best to remember everything. I'll spoil it for the other anon.

Hyrule was originally at peace before a group known as the Interlopers appeared using strong magic. They are thought to be the Sheikah due to their knowledge of the Sacred Realm/Triforce and typical use of Shadow Magic. But that is just a theory.
They began to assault Hyrule and knowledge spread of the Triforce. To the point that people coveted it so much that even friends were willing to betray each other, Illia would kill Link and Link would kill Ilia for instance.
Ultimately the Interlopers were defeated and sentenced at the Arbiter's Ground and sent to the Twilight Realm to become the Twili.
Ultimately Link's presence as one of the Dark Links is suggested by Lanayru's warning of using the Fused Shadows, that even he is susceptible to great darkness/evil.

I think that's all that was in the cutscene beyond the creation story. It's been awhile since I've played TP, so forgive me if there is something else I'm forgetting. It's not much of a cutscene in terms of exposition and there are some weird things such as the falling Ilia, but that's generally the gist of the cutscene, that Darkness is great, the Interlopers fell, and even friends are dangerous to each other, that people would do anything for the Triforce.

Preface: the dead are respected and revered in many cultures (rightfully so in this universe)

Kakariko village: originally a shiekah village, opened to the public
>at some point during the war, a nearby point was necessary for ops to take place, and in turn, the village was forced to take on the war effort (camps, the dead, intel, etc)

Shadow temple: sheikah temple revering the dead, (seeing as it has no immediate obvious place in the hyrule goddess hierchy)
>later turned to mass graveyard and torture dungeon(hence the zillion skulls)
>bossman sheikah resents all this, but being the hyrulean army is bigger, waits
>sheikahs, probably being allied with the king, and better fighters, serve as the kings guard, also probably head things like intel and planning
>temple is bastardized into a mass grave, this angers the sheikah
>soon after, used as a intel toture dungeon, ambient atmosphere in mind
>thousands are killed and tortued
>war ends, king, aware of planned treason, imprisons head sheikah in the dungeon,
>cuts out his seeing eye, shatters both wrists, crippling him
>he is locked in the deepest pit at the bottom of the dungeon and given a drum to play so the guards know he's still alive
>eye still full of hate, resentment, and evil, studied, but feared, buried and sealed nearby, and a well built over it

I always viewed them as Middle Eastern.

They live in a desert, they had the Islamic symbol for a time, always ruled by a man, they have an obvious desert tan.
