http://www.polygon.com/2016/6/20/11982544/indie-dev-says-grey-market-key-seller-cost-them-450k-in-sales

>Indie dev says gray market key seller cost them $450K in sales
>“Websites like G2A are facilitating a fraud-fueled economy”
>>
>>342196424
It's always something 'stealing' sales from them.
>>
>>342196424
I paid for the game fully. I played 15 minutes of it. Wish I would have pirated it, it's not very fun. Maybe that and the mediocre reviews are the reason why people didn't buy it. Fuck these assholes. I won't buy again.
>>
>>342196424

I'm pretty sure making mediocre games cost devs money not key sites or pirates or trolls or whatever people like to blame shit on these days.

Sure.... keep telling yourself they are worth that. Idiots think that's actually money they "lost"

They sound entitled.

Yeah but that guy already bought it. The next guy would have bought it from them too.

Why don't you nigs pastebin/archive/SS this shit any more?
Are you actualy trying to make polygon money?

>>
>>342203429
Where do they get the keys in the first place?

AFAIK devs have to manually give them out, right? Ultimately, isn't it the scammer's fault, not G2A's fault, for "tricking" these indie devs (though I can't believe these devs fall for this shit in the first place - if some literal no-name "reviewer"/"LPer" comes to you asking for a key, why the fuck would you give it to them?)?

Or, am I missing something here?
>>
>>342203929
"They" are just a platform for individual sellers. People make money there via cross-region shenanigans, bundle leftovers and sometimes stolen keys.
>>
Did people not read the article?

The keys were bought with stolen credit cards, pawned to G2A, then had chargebacks called on the developer. So yes, this literally cost the devs money through banking fees and people who would have bought the game giving money to G2A instead of the studio.
>>
>>342203929
According to the article, keys are bought using stolen credit cards and then money is charged back.
G2A answered to the dev that they will help with investigating only if dev will partner with them and supply them with more keys.

Basically tinybuild, the devs of punchclub, are claiming that people have bought games from bundles for a fraction of the price of retail, sold them to G2A who have then resold those keys for a small markup. They're crying that they didn't get to screw over consumers as much as they could have if they had sold all those keys at retail. It's a bunch of privileged shits crying foul because capitalism works.
>>
>>342204107
No, I didn't read it, because OP didn't copy it into a pastebin, and I didn't want to give Polygon ad revenue money.

Okay, if this is the case, then yeah, that's pretty shitty - but again, it's not G2A's fault, but rather the scammers themselves.
>>
Honestly this is mostly part of trend to end the idea that you actually own what you buy. Most companies prefer the idea that your renting the license (at full price of course) and hate the idea of people reselling things because they don't profit.
Stolen shit is a shame though.
>>
>>342204238
Aren't they legally required to turn them over?
>>
Reminder that this is the game where the devs locked out paying customers from playing the game THEY PAID FOR on release day, until enough people participated in their shitty Twitch publicity stunt.

The fact that they're the ones now crying about sales should be proof the system works. If you do sleazy things to boost sales, you get what you deserve.
>>
>>342199807
The company i work for does this too lol
every time we need to pay rent or pay employees, we just discount our games by 30 or so% and watch the cash flow in.
>>
>>342204968
>>342199807
Now I'm curious.
Do either of you guys actually buy games from keyselling sites?
>>
>>342204812
waitwaitwait. Source? What happened exactly? It sounds almost too dumb to be real
>>
>>342202059
Yes.

Person buys 10k codes with a fraudulent or stolen credit card.

Person does a chargeback and gets back all of his money.

Person sells 10k codes which he hasn't lost on G2A.

Just look up TwitchPlaysPunchClub and you'll find the whole story. Basics of it were they said the game wouldn't be launched until twitch beat their game, so anyone who had pre-ordered it had to wait a couple of days extra until it was all over. I'd say it hurt sales because a) people just watched the stream instead of buying it, and b) it helped show how dull and boring the game really is.
>>
>>342200112
Are you just posting this in thread after thread?

But anons, Polygon is the hippest place to get trendy game news!

You can even do the Konami Code on their homepage LOL

At least you could when it first popped up. I had a friend who was really into The Verge and was excited when Polygon came out. I hated that place from day 1. If only I knew how bad it would get.
>>
>>342200112

It's a shitty game anyway. So much dumb shit to pad out the game length.
Starting off with stat degen. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea?
Gaining money is slow as fuck AND there's a high chance you will get robbed, further impeding your progress. It's just a dumb stat balancing game padded out by the insane grind.
Oh, and there's only 1 viable build in the game.

>>
>>342196424
They could easily solve this but they won't

>Mark chargeback keys as invalid

wow so hard

>buyer gets invalid key (doesn't buy keys from g2a anymore)
>complains to g2a
>G2A can blacklists seller
>seller can't sell again

but they won't because they don't want to be "the bad guys" they want it to resolve itself and for G2A to somehow check if keys are stolen or not using magic

>buy game from dev with stolen credit card
>sell it to russians for 1/10 of what you paid
>owner of card declares fraudulent charges
>dev loses money

buying from G2A is like buying an iPad from a nigga at a gas station
>>
I thought Yahtzee was being casul when he said this game was ass, but I guess it really is terrible.
>>
>>342196424
Got this for iOS for 99 cents.
Stamina/strength best combo
>>
This is nothing new, really. Fraudulent purchases are the reason lots of publishers stopped giving Steam keys with products bought from their sites, like with MangaGamer and Sekai Project.
This happened ages ago, but of course Polygon only reports when their indie darling makes noise about it.
>>
>>342206954
So cheap and you get the product you want?
>>
>>342207978
You'd also get it by pirating the game. Buying from G2A actively hurts the developers/publishers.

There's argument about piracy not hurting anybody because it doesn't remove anything, which is true. Buying grey-market games potentially causes monetary loss for developers.
So if you can't afford to spend few dollars more by buying from legit sites, please just pirate the game.
>>
>>342196424
You know, I didn't play this but it looked like it was decent.

Why the fuck are the devs such cunts though? Aren't these the same faggots who lost LITERALLY BILLIONS to evil pirates?
>>
>>342208447
>Why the fuck are the devs such cunts though
>Alex Nichiporchik is the CEO of tinyBuild and acts as a producer on many tinyBuild titles. Before co-founding tinyBuild, he worked as a marketing exec in web games, used to be a casual game producer, and pro-gamer.
Sounds like it's in the blood.
>>
>>342205363
devs can keep track of the money and kill the keys
>>
>>342207978
Its cheap but you may get shafted by getting the key revoked if they track it to the fraudulent purchase

just like this dumb nigga who bought a ipad for $200 at a gas station and in the box was a mirror
