Blizzard has an unrivaled marketing sector which only grew more adept under the wing of Activision.
What they did with Hearthstone was nothing short of brilliant. They essentially orchestrated an unofficial partnership with every A-list youtube and twitch celebrity. They invited them all into the alpha and no one else. They saw to it that the most popular were always in the lime-light in regards to their esports agenda. The streamers/youtubers got viewers because they were special snowflakes in the special alpha, and Blizzard got a very effective form of free advertisement and publicity. By the time invites started rolling out to people other than internet celebs, the hype for the game was sky high.
Such a very simple game that costed them next to nothing in development costs, made them (and continues to make them) enormous amounts of money all thanks to their perfect manipulation of their consumer-base.
They used the Strategy for Overwatch and it again has paid off for them. A simple game that was very cheap to develop advertised and hyped into oblivion for free by twitch celebrities.

Played it while it was in beta (too frugal to buy now), probably one of the best fps experiences I've ever had. It's really right next to TF2 in fps quality except it's a lot more varied than tf2. Also notice how I'm constantly comparing it to tf2, because Chances are you will too!

Not true. Overwatch started as an MMO, known as Project Titan, which Blizzard spent a bunch of time and money on. It wasn't working out, so they kept what they liked (Blizzard making their first FPS, the artstyle and universe), and got rid of everything else (Being an MMO, creating your own toon, having a day job when you aren't shooting people)
So no, Overwatch was surprisingly expensive to develop, because the original concept didn't pan out. Lucky for them, they learned from the Destiny fiasco, and didn't promise anything until they knew they were going to be able to release something.

Im not going to read this shitty thread but i've played the game a fair amount. With and without a group of friends varying from 2 of us to a full squad.
Its well made, but poorly balanced. The games fluid, you always feel like youre doing something. People with zero skill can do something and feel good about themsevles. Blizzard really nailed the casual audience on this one.
Its paper thin tho. Theres no depth. The gunplay is super weak, everythings a spongy nerf rifle feeling gun. If you want to play it even semi seriously your forced into a very boring gamestyle with a preset team of the best in each category. D.Va's tank ability, Defense Matrix, is really useful but requires your team to understand what's happening.
I've used it to stop Pharah and Bastion's ults at the same time, and watched my team tear them apart. D.Va becomes a hard counter to bastion if you just aim the matrix at it and let your team kill him now that they're not taking damage.

1. PCs develop faster and in more segmented steps and game development adjusts to that, meaning even on release, some new shit may already is developed, that surpases the stuff they used in that console.
2. For FPSes, the controls are just leagues more precise, which is a core game mechanic. May not that bad in casual play. But high end competative becomes fucking impossible compared to PC. The devs even acknowledged that with their stance, that they balance console and PC versions differently.

Its okay at best but this is my opinion.
1. It has a very low individual skill ceiling with most characters.
2. Meta is basically counterpicking or using certain team comps that are just far better then anything else on most maps
3. Gunplay doesn't feel nearly as fast/fluid as it should
4. Map design sucks fucking ass
5. Game types suck ass and KOTH is 10x superior to a shittier version of TF2 push the payload.
I don't get it. Even with Blizzard name i think the only reason this game is successful is because of the MOBA type hero setup and every special snowflake likes a character they can identify with.
But this is all my opinion and i have a natural bias about class based shooters as they feel like they took 1 complete shooter and split it up. And then people act like team play can't exist in standard shooters. When acting as a team can only be beneficial in any team game.

This game is starting to get stale, and I can pinpoint exactly why.
Quick play is complete and utter shit. I understand the reasoning behind it. They keep all the players in the same que for their epic "50% matchmaking" and you always have people to play with. They artificially extend the learning curve since you have to learn EVERY map at once, and you randomly get maps.
But the problem is that not every map is a bullseye. You get random maps/gamemodes. What if I want to just do king of the hill maps? I don't get to choose. Sometimes I have to slog through shitty maps just to play something fun. Maybe I just want to play one map and learn it well.
I wish I had 11 friends always on for custom games or something. They need to add new maps in soon to stop this stagnation, or at least let me que for and playtemple of anubisforever

Actually it favors the defenders. An attacker team always has to be better than the defender (or the defenders should be pricks who play deathmatch instead of stopping the payload / cap).
Even a team of selfish pricks can defend most points and ultimately the best chokepoints on the level with ease. They only need to pick 2 torbs, bastion, hanzo and some tank / heal.
Meanwhile even if the attackers picking good heroes with good synergy it doesn't matter if they can't coordinate attacks or ult simultaneously.

People were just desperate for a new class-based FPS to pick up the slack of the now bloated and sickly TF2.
Overwatch doesn't have the same magic as TF2 because the classes are more bite-sized and less extreme in their specializations and vulnerability to counters, and the concentrated 6v6 gameplay leaves less room to fuck off and do what you want to do.
TF2 is hectic, but you have the option of being as fast or slow-paced in your approach to an objective or skirmish as you want. It's also very territory based, but with a lot of potential for roaming and with a lot of potential self-imposed missions to fulfill. You might take an alternate route as the scout, check the sewers for enemies as the Pyro, or set up a foothold in the enemy base as the engineer. In Overwatch, it's a constant deathmatch where you must either be fighting for the objective or traveling to a better flanking angle.

There is literally nothing wrong with advertising / marketing. It is not a malicious or manipulative practice that should be shunned.
