> While discussing the past and present of VR on Reddit, Valve’s Alan Yates dropped in this tidbit:
> “I was super fortunate to start at Valve right around the time Michael Abrash had begun the AR/VR research team. It was a much smaller team then than it is now, it has since grown to encompass about a third of the company, but the key individuals that solved most of the really hard technological problems and facilitated this generation of consumer headsets are still here working on the next generation.”
>Estimates have placed Valve’s employee count between 300-350. That would mean upwards of 100 people are behind Valve’s VR effort.

But /v/ told me that VR was a meme...

The other two thirds are working on Half Life 3, right?

So what's the other 2/3 working on?
>>
>But /v/ told me that VR was a meme...
It is. Valve constantly works on cool stuff that nobody wants. Remember Steamboxes?
>>
>>342171708
It is a meme.

Until we get good **VIDEO GAMES** on the platform instead of just a few gimmicky ideas then I'm assuming it's going to go the same way motion controls did.

I seriously don't understand
>>
Not surprised int he least, valve just gets free money constantly via the store end so they are perpetually in search of trying to get in on the next big fotm to profit from that.

>>342171850
>>342171906
looking busy so the they get paid. Valve don't develop shit, they acquire pother peoples development projects, cannibalize the staff worth keeping, then let go of the artist/writer types. they know asset generation can be outsourced tot he 'community.'
>>
>>342172265
making a video game involves doing a lot of work, and making 'some' money.

running the largest pc game store platform involves doing 'ZERO' work and getting lots of money. which fucking one would you pick?
>>
>>342172265
They're making more cash money dollars from gambling crates than they ever did making games. CS:GO and Dota 2 fucking rake in the cash.
>>
>>342171906

>>
They are pushing this really hard but after the launch of every VR set everyone stopped talking about it. Its a lost cause. Even Activision thinks its a failure.
>>
>>342171959
>>342171708
It's not really a meme per say, it's just for rich people.
The market has been fragmented into two sections thanks to corruption. 1. Poor people. 2. rich people. There's no longer any kind of middle class, so valve is investing in expensive VR technology that people that have more money than brains will instantly jump on. They then have the crate gambling business for poor retards and brazillians.
It's just smart business for them to do this.
>>
>>342172513
>>342172695

While true, they make so much money that they're sitting on huge piles. While they spend some on VR and other hardware projects, there's literally no reason not to use that money developing some games. It'll make a higher return than collecting interest in a bank account.
>>
>>342172965
Why risk sullying their reputation with a bad game when they can sit on the games they have critical acclaim for? You don't want them to be like Blizzard do you? Who sullied their reputation by making games.
>>
>>342173173

Reputation is blown out of proportion. EA, Ubisoft, Gearbox, etc, they still get huge fucking sales on their latest hyper marketed game despite their previous shit games or anti-consumer practices.
>>
>>342171708
Still a meme compared to what Nintendo has in the oven.

VR is absolutely a gimmick. For now. They need to reach get 8k 120fps with no screendoor effect, as well as implement an untethered version, either by doing what (I think) alienware did and make a backpack thing with a laptop capable of those specs, or transfer it directly with some as-yet uninvented wireless signal.

I have no doubt in my mind that we'll eventually get there, probably within a decade. Until then, though, just a gimmick. A gimmick that makes people really sick really fast.

>>
>>342174453
I have like 20 VR games, the fuck you talking about?
>>
I really hope VR isn't the future of gaming.

I hated the Nintendo Wii when it came out. It completely ruined Nintendo for me. And now to a lesser extent, I hate the idea of VR and only to a lesser extent because it isn't mandatory for any great games. I'm fine with it being optional, but I'd hate to see it become mandatory.

Video games are fine the way they are. Just give me a controller or a keyboard/mouse and a big screen and I'm good.
>>
Doesn't mean it's going to be a success, valve could end up taking a major hit if vr fails.
>>

>>
>>342174751
I doubt it's going to fail, I've had 10 or so friends who have tried mine whom now want to build their own rig and get a vive even despite the cost as most of them do not own gaming PCs.

Seeing is believing, a few songs on audio shield, 30 mins in holopoint, taking a cruise in elite dangerous, it doesn't take much to convince people they want it.

It's okay little timmy, some day you might move out of mommies basement.

I make around 70k/annual from my job and another 40-50k from investments. After my monthly expenses I'm still left with 5-6k in left over money. The majority goes into savings / investments.

Dropping $800 on a Vive is fucking nothing, you don't make even 10k/annually if you think it is. I can spend more than that a month on fucking alcohol rofl

Steambox was pointless to begin with. You can just build your own micro ATX and throw steamOS on it for less than a prebuilt, as with any other PC. Marketing this shit to PC gamers, whom already know how to built their own shit... was pretty retarded of Valve.

It happened so fast it's almost unbelievable. But here we are.
>>
>>342171850
>>342171906
You have it backwards

HL3 will be a VR game. Both HL1 and 2 sold on their technology, Valve has been waiting years for a good enough gimmick to be the base of HL3, which is why we have gotten so many rumors of HL3 as well because they have been trying so many different things.

But think about it; AAA tier developer making a game based around VR off a brand as big as HL. Its going to be (even if its shit) one of the biggest sellers of all time, at the very least for moving VR headsets which Valve wants becuase there is an entire library of VR games no one buys on steam because they dont have headsets yet.

HL3 will be a VR title.
>>
>>342176387
Don't know why I quoted that post.

>>342176414
Chet the polack said straight up it wont be VR though

>I make around 70k/annual from my job and another 40-50k from investments
And you're also an elite soldier in Gorilla Warfare that can shoot lases out of his eyes and your dad works for Microsoft and Playstation and they're going to make a new console together and it will have Super Smash Bros 7 as an exclusive launch title.
>>
If $400k+ sports cars are still being made when some redneck can beat it by slapping some turbos on an old Mustang and some suspension work, I think VR will be fine. Niche with limited applications, but it should survive long enough for mass produced versions under $300 to be common.
>>
>Valve perusing things they actually want to do and not just making whatever other people want them to make
This should be a good thing. Otherwise you get shit like Activision who shits out CoD sequels or WoW expansions.

>>

Not true for sims. It's arrived for simulation games. I can agree you on other genres, but there's no fucking going back when it comes to car or plane sims.
>>
>>342174746
I am with you on this one. I do think that VR must be mandatory for any title that's simulating things, but I don't see it being a must for the CoD kiddies or people playing on CS:GO type of shooter.

Leave it for the simfags and call it a day.
