My first was FE7 one million years ago, and since then I've completed the backlog. They are all essentially the same game (and that is OKAY, it is why I buy FE EVERY TIME) with different setting/story/characters and sometimes the mechanics change, for better or worse.

There's some differences in the map design too. For the most part every game also has different classes/abilities/characters that at least change it up a little. Though at the end of the day it's pretty much, formation here, end turn, counterattack in a way that doesn't get anyone killed.I still don't really see how that makes the games any worse, it's pretty much worked for a couple of years.

There are 4 3DS FE games. Awakening and Fates. Fates is technically 1 big game consisting of 3 different but full length routes. In terms of core mechanics all 3 play the same but Conquest is the harder route, Birthright is the easiest, and Revelation is in the middle. Revelation is DLC only and is considered the "canon" end by a lot of people. There are more FE games in generally but on different handhelds and consoles, the series is over 20 years old.

I could not believe the sheer difficulty difference between birthright and conquest. Playing them both on hard side by side, steamrolling through birthright as the easiest FE experience next to PoR while screaming with frustration as I slog through conquest, spending hours on each chapter.
