It's not really technology.
Every character you make gets saved to the roster folder. Every character in the roster folder has a chance of appearing in the game.
You can also put other people's characters in your own roster folder to have them appear in your game. Picture related.

I'm starting over and deleting the entire roster and replacing everyone with my own custom characters. Most of them are going to be Labor mules for manpower though. Here's my orc chef.

Less gay than the anime you posted. There is a grand total of one guy you can enter into a romance with. There are multiple guys you can fug but multiple girls too.
The art also contains almost as many tits as dicks, so it kinda evens out.
Guys I can't get any further. Enemies do ridiculous damage to my tanks (30-70 crits, 20-40 normals) and they don't have the potions to just heal that off, and my DPS can't kill the enemies fast enough since they're only managing like 10-20 damage per attack which doesn't even knock off 1/4th their hp most of the time.
I can't really advance at all. All areas are like this. I'm level 9. Should I start over or is there some kind of fix? I have Kirilo, Borgnina, my mage PC, Bato, and some generic hunt/dodge guy.

All I can say is keep trying, and maybe switch tactics. Uneasy Grave can be tough, but with a Kirilo, Borgnina, your mage and the hunt guy as an archer you should be able to finish it at that level.

Yes, you can enjoy it. The nudity is fairly gender neutral and while there is some gay stuff the vast majority of stuff has nothing to do with sex at all. The plot (as far as I'm aware yet) is basically what happened to the island to make it fantasy Australia and how you're gonna get off it.

I don't know how I feel about this guy.
He's some kind of spellsword with healing aura and some kind of group buff, but he also has some kind of tank-esque aura that disrupts enemies. I don't think he does anything really well other than make others stronger. Anyone found any pretty good monster recruits? Iron Golem is still pretty much the best thing ever.

You just need to be either very lucky or very patient.
As long as they're at one heart there's no limit to how much they can hesitate, so with a team built around recruiting you can get pretty much anyone you want.
