Soul Voices give boosts or additional effects to arts and you have to actually pay attention or miss the window.

Anyway you control the player's movement but it will auto attack with basic attacks like regular gun fire or melee which do pitiful damage.
That's why you have your arts, the skills in this game. Every time you use one the art needs to recharge for an allotted amount of time which can be decreased through upgrades and what not. Not using the skills after they've charged starts a secondary charge when you're using a weapon associated with that art for example a knife skill will start a second charge if you're using the knife but the arts for the ranged weapon won't get that secondary charge until you start using it.
Also where you hit matters for some skills so a back or side attack causes more damage.
Your team mates are all AI but you can command them so they do things like use only melee or range or board and exit their mechs as well as activate overdrive.
