It's completely possible to drain both, though. You need to juggle a blue and green "stamina" gauge that makes a circle around your character and depletes when you use attacks. It's very easy to keep both metres drained as Sham, but if you're doing that, the enemy probably won't survive for too long anyways.

I like Touhou and all but Touhou and Suguri play really differently.
For example, in Touhou you only have two different shot types per character but in Suguri you have way more weapons than that, and each weapon has two shot types or more.
Suguri also has dashing so you can dash through laser attacks. You can also destroy ballistic based attacks. It's a very different feel from Touhou, which is about threading the needle between bullets while shooting. Suguri feels more faster and aggressive.
Not only that, this is the Acceleration of Suguri series. It's a 1v1 danmaku arena brawler. The closest Touhou has to that is PoFV, which isn't similar to it at all.

Either beat the original/normal/casual campaign (however low you're willing to stoop) to unlock Tomomo and then use her, or use Fernet/Yuki/Poppo/Starbreaker depending on the stage and just try to do everything once on Extreme.
Tomomo is amazing in the campaign because she has 6HP, +2Atk, and +1Evd with neutral defense, and even her terrible Hyper can at least be used to delay a CPU that gets a little too close to winning if you have surplus stars and just need to make it home. She requires beating every level of the non-DLC campaigns, though, on any difficulty. If you manage to get her, though, she's the best choice for almost every level of it as well.
Otherwise Fernet is good for withstanding your cheating opponents, Yuki is good for last-second ganks that get a shitload of stars, Poppo can win quickly if she pulls more than one hyper, and Starbreaker is good on the final stages to take stars out of circulation, revive faster than Tomomo, and occasionally fucking opponents with her Hyper.

Hono also confirmed that everyone but those two were dead by MJ's end, and that Alicianrone's planet is where they ended up.
