Great thread, OP.
I never said I was making any, OP.

Im just doing concept stuff
I suck at drawing so also practising that shit to
Slowly, due to finalswhich I'm not even working on pls send help
I got a new computer after losing all my WIPs to a double hard drive failure
i wasn't gonna finish any of them anyways
Now I'm just stuck thinking of what super small scale game i wanna make that still has enough charm for me to be proud of.
still writing story and dialog, after that then I'll go into level design....I pretty much suck at drawing and music, so I'm hopping that wont make me go "Fuck it" mode when I get to it....also, I still have to decide on what engine to use...

Love the filename man, hahaha. Shit, you can almost feel how begrudgingly you made that.

>>342109058
Yeah...
So I have a concept, and slight programming knowledge. Enough to get me started and learn on the go anyway
But I have no artistic talent. Can't make any assets, visual or audio
What the fuck am I supposed to do?

>>342107314
It's going well. I've been implementing a bunch of classes and going to finish all the ones I have planned so far today.
>>342107314
Badly. Lots to do and no time.
I've been greenlit so I'm panicking and thinking of rewriting large chunks of the engine
>>342109276
How to do assets if you're shit at art?
Easy, draw the game in really shitty ms-paint/pixel art and make the characters look horrifyingly stupid, then make the dialog a bit quirky and pretend like you're making the game "ironically shitty" or "subversively bad" or whatever the post-ironic meme kids call it these days, like that guy who does simpsons art. Guaranteed buys from Steam babies who saw their favorite Youtuber playing le ebin maymay game.
Or just, you know, practice your art and get good. This is the respectable option, but the first option will probably actually make you more money.

Prototype for core gameplay is coming along well, once the groundwork is there I can start working on some test maps.
Lack of any 3d art or animation talent means it will be all boxes and pills but eh, I can worry about making it look like something once it actually plays well.

Learn feet-based programming skills
Then you can already have clickbait articles as publicity for your next game
>"One step at a time, this anon has created this game with his feet"
>"While some feet develop fungal infections, anon's feet develop games"
Like shit. Stuck in development hell because of lack of time from me and my two friends who work with me.
Such a shame. We had an amazing concept. I can only hope we continue developing someday soon.
Well my engine is almost done and I can do the art. But I'm still struggling with coming up with interesting gameplay mechanics or a story. What I need is some kind of idea guy willing to work for 25% of the profits but alas it's not meant to be.
Its OK

But seriously it's been done to fucking death.
My main problem right now is that I've ended up making a game where you're a dude in power armor dual wielding a variety of guns and shields and drone weapons while jumping around blowing shit up
But I' more of a fantasy guy and struggle to visualize any kind of interesting scifi look, let alone story.
I'm not in a programming mindset right now so trying to do assets for my game, a non-conventional (read: not sci-fi pewpew lasers) shmup, I can't into art very good though

Besides just jumpingand eventually double jumping/hovering, those won't be too hard to implement, players and monsters can get around using their spells. Make your game concept using placeholder assets, squares and rectangles. Get it to the point that the gameplay is what you want, then get building the whole game.
Once you're close to completion (it's playable beginning to end in placeholder form) pitch it to some artfags, look at their portfolios and once you decide on someone, get them to sign a contract (do NOT pay them before they finish their job) detailing the timeframe you want it done in, any deductions if they don't finish it before your deadline and any legal action you may take if they abandon the project.
Same goes for music, there's plenty of amateur composers out there and you probably aren't going to need many tracks, so that should be easy to sort out. SFX can be royalty-free or bought online, if you don't want to do the Foley yourself. Audio is literally the least important component and you shouldn't worry about it until you've gotten your art sorted.
>>342113879
Probably not, I've considered it but I'm not game enough to dabble in trying to netcode. I'll just stick to good old single player

Good idea, hadn't thought of that.
Planning on going tower defense with rpg and land control elements. You are ghosty things and have to plant your towers to feed off these npcs as your resource. Enemies spawn from their bases and hunt down your towers, feeding too fast or killing npcs causes them to spawn faster and target your character specifically (you are the boss they need to end).

>>342116512
Yes. Make gameplay concepts until making them is second nature in whatever program you're using and you perfect making one you really love. Then draw up a story, a plan for the game's content, a potential dev timeline and then team up with an artfag to help you out with assets.
If you make a few levels or some short content, release it as a demo/alpha and send it to reviewers/bloggers/e-celebs to get attention and accept donations on your game dev blog/website. If it gets enough attention and you truly believe you can finish the game, stick it on indiegogo or kickstarter to fund the artist and your own living costs for the length of the development.

If you don't try, you won't succeed.
Learn and expand your capabilities; you're capable of learning so it's not beyond your capabilities at all really.
Giving up because "I don't know how to do that right now" is like giving up on learning to draw, or learning an instrument because "I'm not an artistic person", it's just an excuse for laziness, not a reason why you can't jump the next hurdle.
I don't know how there are some people who manage to do everything in their game by themselves...it's time consuming as hell...

>>342118928
Not him, but:
Get motivated on a simple project like Pong.
Look around for games that, even if small, have greatness where it counts according to you.
Add an overworld map with territories to conquer in your Pac-Man game.
Add RPG progression to your endless runner.
Add moral choices to your space invaders clone.
Make it JUST BIG ENOUGH that you really care, and don't expand it by an inch.
You need to care, AND it needs to be small. Or else you won't complete it.
I swear every time I learn something new in GameMaker to make another piece of the game I wind up rewriting half of the stuff I've already done. Putting off working on the pause/inventory/stat stuff because of all the early work I've done that I'll have to fix up in the process.

Im trying to build a game where everything is random, and you can interact with the world it creates. Throwing graphics out the window, everything starts as basic shapes that slowly evolve into more complex creatures and ai based on what is around them. They start with a random set of personalities and requirements/objectives (within a set)to satisfy. If they are successful, they over time development basic routine to regularly sustain them selves. If not, they die. Im working on getting one cubix to establish some kind of home tonight

I considered making the sprites just a bunch of overlayered sprites like TTYD since it's easier to animate, but we thought that handdrawn would look better. The issue is hand drawn is a lot of work and you sometimes have to redo animations many times to get them right.
Onion skin is helpful when making handdrawn animations.
>>342123507
is this like star fox64? im starting a star fox clone too =(
hey guys
is making a gamefun?
>>342121570
Just the one design? it might take me about a full day's work to do the turnaround and prop stuff, so like $150. Depends on what you want though, if there's something you already want it to look like and I'm not searching for new forms it'll take much faster
>>342124273
Oh cool. Nearly everything in the one I'm doing is hand drawn so this is helpful. What is Onion Skin?
Also pls keep cute bee cute
>>342124617
Parts of it. As an artist, drawing and then getting to see animations implemented properly is a lot of fun. Giving up after is less fun so don't do that!
>>342124605
I hope it will be
>>342124753
Onion skin is using transparent frames to base the next on, like the traditional method of animation. Look up, there are many tutorials for it.
Also bee will probably stay as she is, but we are thinking into changing moth as some frames look really off model when unfolding the wings. We have no idea how to change moth tho.
>>342124617
It's fun if you're doing what you like, I prefer programming than making assets, but some people prefer to draw than code. It's just too rare to find someone who makes music.
>>342109430
hey look it's adnzzz or whatever your name was
>>342125073
>animation
Wow that makes a ton of shit way easier, thanks.
Good that bee will stay cute, maybe move moths head a mite, or change the wing shape, there's tons of different moth wings. Also might be since an actual moth doesn't do the suave wizard cloak like yours does, cool as it may be. See pic.
>>342125578
Thanks, I will take a look. We already made a few other moths but we don't know if it would fit as a party character since Moth is supposed to be a mage.
I'll try to figure something.
How the fuck do I write a story
>>342126716
Not the other guy, but I really like that cloak look you have with his wings. IMO you just need to give them all a bit of a crisper look and they would look great.
Get that thing finished and I would buy it, like the concept and artstyle you have going on.
>>342126727
What kinda game, anon?
>>342127040
It's an RPG. I have gameplay, art, and some shitty music, but no reason to do anything.
Trying to implement a shader that mimics the visual deficiencies I have. Having a lot of fun.
>>342127243
What is it about? Show some pics
>>342127243
It all depends on what the setting and gameplay are like and what kind of story progression you're fond of.
>>342109276
Make the whole game, make it good, and hire someone to replace your programmer art/assets.
>>342126716
I'd say it would work with the one on the right with a few tweaks. Moth is good for a wizard, but these are typical traits that would go well with them and can be used in a moth's design
>frills/lacey moths
Good for that "magical" look
>long wings
good for the "cloak" that you want
>fuzziness
great for the outfit you have on the original blue one
Also the "dust" that some moths make would be good for showing magic. Not trying to dictate your designs though, it isn't my game and you're doing very well with what you've got.
I made this trailer, is it any good?

Follow tutorials on basic game concepts that let you learn what you can do easily in your game engine then try to figure out 1) what you enjoy and 2) what will other people actually want to buy, then try to find a balance. There's no sense in making a walking simulator when you have a hatred for them.

>>342127243
you have characters and/or setting i take it? start asking questions about what made your characters/setting the way it is, answering them to create motivations that will guide the plot.
Hey paper bee guy I really like your game and want it to be finished. Do you want free help with it?
>>342127243
hey bro I will writefag for you if you want. since it's your game I will leave everything to your approval.
>>342127717
Yeah, I tried changing a few things in the current design (like head size and height) but I feel it's somewhat plain compared to bee and beetle (beetle has been changed already from an old design in pic because of trouble animating it)
The main cast was based on the 3 main classes of RPG, Thief (bee), warrior (beetle) and mage (moth), so I can't change moth's motiff since part of the plot and battle skills are built around that.
I don't want to make moth too tall as the other party members are shorter. Moth is the tallest, and even it is shorter than most NPCs.
I will try messing with the design some more.
>>342128761
We are thinking of getting someone to do the final art in case we can't do it by ourselves, and music. Programming is already covered.
>>342128735I don't have a reason for the mechanic yet.I have trouble focusing on some planes/textures and have been thinking about how to make that a game mechanic or base a game around that.

How do you make an RPG without a story. Almost all of them start with some kind of story concept if not necessarily a full outline.

Not really, you can use pre-built assets and Unity helps with graphical stuff, but if you want advanced actions you will have to code them yourself, be it in C#, Javascript or whatever else unity supports (I personally use C#)

How many hours needed to learn C# ? Just to be okay-ish
>>342131248
>guess i'll just make my own photoshop
>>342131312
It'll take a while.
If you're going to learn how to program, learn with non-game projects. If you're more into art stuff, stick with it and work with a programmer on a project you both want to do.
>>342131395
I don't want or need a fully-fledged AAA engine with massive functionality like UE4 or anything, it would be more accurate to say "guess I'll just make my own mspaint" which is actually pretty easy.
>>342130479
Where did you learn how to make an editor like this? And what program are you using?
Also show me the gameplay i'm very interested.
>>342131312
I already have a base of C knowledge from programming uni, but I learned C# by watching tutorials on youtube on how to make platformers.
After that it's only practice, I already made many short games before that never went anywhere, but it gave me programming knowledge as I tried new things.
Literally google "how to do x in unity/C#" when you get stuck, and look around. Don't be frustated if the first result isn't the answer, and never copy paste code directly. Try to read it and understand what each parts do, and eventually you will learn. It isn't a fast thing either, and you only learn by practicing.
It should take about a week to understand how code works if you pay attention, and about a month or more to start making your own stuff without copying directly.
>>342131610
It's not that hard m8.
Just implement only what you need as you go with atleast a semi-sane and modular base.

If you've got a good idea, just use unity you gay. Or go a step up and buy unreal. Don't they sell dev kits or something?
The key is to not skimp on art or gameplay. As long as it looks and feels good, which cares what engine you used?

>>342132034

>>342131248
>>see people get shit on for using Unity
it's just a meme, go ahead and use it
you know, you're going to get shit on a lot more for making your own 3d engine, if you really care about that kind of thing,
How does one "shill" a freeware game? I make absolutely no money on it whatsoever; I just want people to play it and see what I am trying to do.
I feel like less attention is given to freeware games in general nowadays (compared to commercial games). Why is this?
Testing Phase Dash. It makes the dash allow you to pass through walls. I fucked up the distance checking here a little bit, so there's times he ends up inside a wall.
I don't know if I should stick with the Dark Souls style camera controls (camera is strictly behind player when you target lock) or more like a PlatinumGames action game where the camera tends to be farther from the player and target lock won't necessarily keep the camera behind the player.
>>342131610
I guess. But why do you want to make an engine, even a simple one? Do you want to work on them? There's no point otherwise, I really doubt the engineers working on the software do any game dev at all.
If you still want to do that start, did you read this? http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/MichaelKissner/20151027/257369/Writing_a_Game_Engine_from_Scratch__Part_1_Messaging.php
Did you even decide if you'll work with DX or OpenGL or Vulkan?
>>342131648
An editor isn't that difficult since you're just storing configuration information and then loading the corresponding environment when you go into the play mode.
You could even do it as easily as a long list of if(n=i){"render" block a at x,y} statements that recursively goes through the save file or array that's storing the configuration, though this wouldn't be optimal.
>>342132375

>>342111793
Looks cute. Would be neat to see some moving stuff though
>>342107314
Who here waiting on source2?
>>342132375
>Why is this?
Ever since Steam opened the Greenlight floodgates, and vidya became more easily profitable/viable, people don't care about freeware.
The best way is to probably make it open-source and post it. I think /igg/ would like it if they're still alive.
>>342132595
That explains why devs might be less likely to make freeware, but doesn't explain why people would pay less attention to it. People are still making it; it just seems to get shoved to the side.
Designing UI is a pain. Also I can't decide if I want the game to look more like Killer7/EX Troopers or Persona 5. I should also decide on the game's setting and theme to help me better design the environments and characters. Still I'd be approaching the development all backwards. I ought to make a prototype first but I don't know much anything about coding. I have Playmaker installed too yet I've no idea how to use it to make the things I need. Like a Legend of Grimrock style character controller.
>>342118756
Those look excellent. Are you going indie by choice? I'm sure with that portfolio you could get hired professionally.
>>342109276
I'm the opposite. Think of it this way. You'll have a better chance of finishing the game solo than I do. And as mentioned before, hiring someone to replace your art later is a good idea.
>>342130985
if there was anything i learned from my one game dev elective class in uni, it is that if you do plan on selling this you need to start focusing on getting attention before it releases. Even undertale had a Tumblr way before it released. this also motivates you to finish.
I really want you to finish this game.
>>342118756
Still here?
Is it frowned upon by the community and/or people who play unity games to buy and use unity asset or no one give a shit except a couple tryhard fags ?
>>342132789
>it just seems to get shoved to the side.
Yeah, with the sheer influx of paid shit, it makes attention harder.
That goes double with freeware, sometimes.
Unturned, PoE, and others are the exceptions.
If it's good people will play it.

Well, I've been tinkering with programming for several years (compsci student), and I've been attempting gamedev for most of that. I didn't learn how to do this anywhere, so to say, just figured out the things I had to do based on the experience I have.
> And what program are you using?
I'm making the game in Love2D, for devving I'm using sublime text and graphics gale for graphics.

>>342133812
you really have problems with creativity if you have a game idea that actually is exactly like a game that already exists
you're probably overestimating how similar your gameplay is to others. there will never not be overlap somewhere, and games are simply too complex. someone might find your game similar to another, but it's doubtful it will come off as a ripoff or won't be worth playing because of it
>>342111218

It's not as if there are a lot of games like that now.
People like you are nostalgic for that type of game though and would pay for it. That's the best way to go, I mean look at Drift Stage, Yooka Laylee, Indivisible and even Mighty Number 9; they all cash in on people's nostalgia for niche genres/game ideas that haven't been used in a while.
>>342133768
My first ever unity project was a fighting game with a quirky cast of characters. Wizards, robots, mermaids on walking mechs, sharks, etc.
But fighting games are really hard to make, and since they need consistant framerate unity isn't too good for it (and since it was my first one the code is a mess)
I also tried to make a roguelite metal slug, where you run around and enemies, items and objects appear randomly as you go around.
There was also a RPG platformer with empty suits of armor knights fighting each other.I also half made a splatoon clone with online while waiting for the game to release but it was super shitty

No problem, while that design won't work for moth, it can be used for another character.
The issue with moth is that the body is too thin/small compared to the head when unfolding, so it looks off. I tried changing the head size already, but it would look off.
I am still trying a few alternatives. I am also thinking on changing the color since only blue is too bland (it makes sense though since moth uses cold magic)

For now it's going to be really simple.
I want to try adding double notes (where you have to press two keys at once) but things like press and hold would mean rewriting the whole code base and I'm not sure if I can implement it at my level of coding ability anyway.
If you have any neat feature I should think about adding, do tell me. I'm not really expert on music/rhythm games to tell the truth.

I'm learning Blender now. Start with fruit and shit. You gotta work your way up to humans

Learn to scribble people on paper and learn basic anatomy, it will immensely help you with trying to model people.

Then you will only have to worry about rigging and UV

>>342143816
I would tell you to make a base mesh in like 500 polygons and then go on Zbrush and sculpt there.
making a human directly on maya/blender is madness.
I'm trying to implement an event system in Unity for communicating with attack and jump scripts, and keeping them decoupled from my controller.
The idea is that there's an "Ability Manager" that has an array of all the move scripts, and in its update step iterates through the array and manually updates each Ability.
The Manager has a single delegate that takes a Generic reference to an Ability script type, then filters through the Ability List and calls the Ability type in the array.
That way the Controller only needs to have a reference to the Ability Manager and subscribe to the Ability Manager's Invoke fuction to call any action.

I'm by no means an expert in rhythm/music games either, as I'm basically tone deaf (good thing I won't be making music myself for my own game). However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with making simple games, so no worries.
As a random suggestion, you could add difficulty by making it randomize the button you need to press (so anything from A to Z) and it's displayed on the dots.
>>342143816
Go to the Polycount wiki and download a base mesh and just build off of that.

That's not the issue, the body and head look just fine. The only issue I see with the design is the wingspan: his body is so thin that if his wings perfectly wrap around like that, there's no way his wingspan could be that wide.
Other than that, all your stuff looks awesome. Keep up the good work. I especially love the stinger hands on the bee.

I'll state this for my two favorite genres:
Strategy/tactics games
Micromanagement, shit AI, "breadth" rather than depth
Space sims
None have good, alive multiplayer for PVP dogfighting (often, when there is multiplayer, people just want to do co-op and shit)
Step 1: Planning
Step 2: Look at planning
Step 3: Realize it's unoriginal
Step 4: Scrap everything and restart
Step 5: Repeatlife is suffering
I'm also making spaceship models for a small space shooting game.

I want all the bugs in the game to have 4 limbs only, so I won't add more arms. However, I lowered their position and made the wings smaller. It looks a lot better.
Also I made up a few color mockups, if anyone have a better suggestion feel free to post it.

I implemented getting status effects, and having them do things. Freeze doesn't have a graphic yet though, and petrify doesn't deal extra damage taken from physical attacks yet, but that's easy to implement. Had to refactor some things to support petrify but it works now for the most part. It should allow for hitstop if I wanted to add it now though. Probably.

>an anime robogirl walks into a gay bar

If you make all assets yourself it could work. Unity has built in 2D support so you can make a 2D without worrying about quads, but if you want you can go the 3D way.
Don't fall for the meme that unity is bad, you can make good games in unity if you know what you're doing.

Which way around? Hotline Miami gameplay with Doom design, or Hotline Miami design with Doom gameplay?
Actually, seems like it'd be neat either way.
>>342140616
Depending on how complex of a game you want to make, programming is probably the easiest out of those to learn just given the plethora of resources, engines like Unity and Unreal being able to supplement lack of in-depth knowledge, and then just generally having easy ways to look up how to do X or Y.
Art/modeling would really just come with time and consistent practice which is something I also struggle with as someone who's likely equally shitty at art.
More often than not I can see the idea of what I want something to look like in my head, but translating that into something visual is just not something I can do competently.
I really just wanna make a game with cute girls and while I can program it at least slightly well I can't actually make said cute girls.

Hotline Miami Gameplay With Doom Design
Came back to my game after several months of inactivity. Properly did sprite ordering to create the perspective instead of continuing to cheat it, made NPC scripting significantly more powerful, redrew some NPCs, and added this exciting hell area.
>>342151693
Is there any advantage to using Godot over GM?
>>342152465
Seems like it could work, the only problem is that Doom uses a lot of guns, and Hotline Miami works best when it's easily transitional between melee and guns.
It's also my personal opinion that the melee parts of Hotline are more fun than when you're forced to use guns (but then again, that's just my opinion).

Well, it's open source so you don't have to buy a license (I think you can use Game Maker for free too, haven't checked). I think it has coroutines too, you should check them both and see if one fits your needs more than the other.

Don't think making a 2.5D engine (as in, Doom or Duke Nukem 3D like sprite rotations) in Love2D would be worth the hassle, though there are hacks and projects to give it 3D capabilities.

>>342154537
I was wondering about this, is it possible to rip off a games entire game mechanic controls for controls but still sell it just by making original assets? I assume you would need to change some things in order to not get sued or something for it. Like the Press turn system from SMT.
>>342154453
This is something i've been wondering. I havent seen an honest fan game in years. Is everyone afraid to make them? Or is there just no interest?
If any pre-established characters are in an indie game, its usually just as satire, but I'd be so down with making a tower of heaven game after that disgusting april fools joke.

>>342154770
You can copy game mechanics, but doing so will only make your game be labeled a clone.
Just copy but change enough to be it's own thing.
>>342154860
Everyone is afraid of being C&D, or making your own game is much easier nowadays that people would rather make that to profit.
>>342154860
My general thoughts on the matter are that if you're going to dedicate as much time to a project like making a game, it probably would be wise to be able to get something out of in turn.
Don't get me wrong; go make your fan creation if you want to, but you likely shouldn't make it too big because of the gray market area.

I've been trying to learn game maker and found some excellent tutorials by a guy on youtube called HeartBeast. I knew a little bit of programming before and I'm learning so much more as we go through all the super simple code I've used to make games before and refine it with inheritance, states, and control objects that can persist through the game even if the characters get destroyed. It's totally eye opening.
I'm never gonna finish this am I?

The idea was to make a first person platformer with shooter/bullet hell elements with expansive vertical levels and less focus on shooting. The controls for this game are still pretty solid to this day (despite not having analog sticks at the time) and I want to expand upon them a little instead of making another generic modern fps with a different skin.
Though with shit like this >>342157790 existing, I'm sure I can get away with having a similar character but with more animal themes. I mean fuck it's been 20 years.

You can definitely get away with same gameplay-new assets. You could likely get away with an honest fangame if you don't charge for it. Kind of depends on the company and the property, but for something that's been dead for 20 years I don't think anyone would care. Most companies only bother to C&D if what you're doing infringes on something they are currently doing or planning on doing.
