Thoughts on SONY VR™ ?

Will it be GREATNESS™ OR will it be just like the other lesser VR counterparts( the jive, the SUCKoulus, google blinderboard)

Sony is the one you guys. I can feel it. They will win the VR war. They care about us, the gamer .

So go out and pre order the pre order for PSVR before they sell out !

>Actual games are being developed.

This shit is hilarious, Sony started development on it's VR years behind the competition, had to develop a console to run it, and it's shaping up like it's going to steal the majority marketshare.

that mech game seems pretty cool. other than that though there isn't much that interests me.

SONY SHILL DEFENSE FORCE REPORTING FOR DUTY

I dunno, I'm already very luekwarm on VR. I don't really have much faith in a facebook owned kickstarter headset or an overpriced headset from a phone company. Like, at least Sony will be able to throw money at first party devs and shit and you'll probably get a more consistent experience running it on a console if you don't have a perfectly tuned up VR capable PC. It's probably the only one that has a chance of having mass market appeal. That or the cheaper mobile ones, but I've used a samsung VR thing and it was fucking horrible.

>>
At least it will force developers into making 60 fps games, because less than that, and you feel physically ill in VR experiences.
Actually 60 is very close to the vomit zone.
>>
>>342105253
I know, that's exactly what it felt like and it was a horrible unpleasant experience that soured me on VR.

Also I was playing a demo for a fucking god awful piece of shit indie game that will probably be a tech demo on the mobile app store and nothing more.

Could apply as well.

Like even Eve hardly feels like an 'actual game'.

PSVR interpolates. The minimum requirement for a PS4 game running VR is 30fps if I'm not mistaken. 45fps turns into 90fps as an example.

It's a shitty gimmick that'll go down the same road as the kinect.

I might be wrong, but this is the most likely scenario.
>>
>>342105457
Interpolation can't into miracles.
Probably a ball shaped frame buffer can do it, but frame interpolation don't.
>>
>>342105463
I see, that rez game seems cool but it will get downgraded to shit.

I'll believe it when they're actually out, that list is similar to the PS4's "50 games within the year!", listing games still not released 4 years later.

But Vive and Oculus both have more games than that.

And the same sadly can be said about VR.

>Even players who've spent countless hours in virtual reality (like our own Jess Conditt) found themselves on the verge of puking while playing Resident Evil 7: Biohazard -- and it wasn't because of the horror game's gory visuals either. No, it's that the game is pushing the limits of PlayStation's hardware, barely managing to run at the minimum 60 frames per second required for PSVR. The problem? Every other VR headset on the market recommends that games run at a minimum of 90 fps.

>By having such a low bar for entry, Sony is allowing PlayStation VR developers to create games that flirt with simulator sickness. Combined with the fact that the demo's controls allowed the player to move their head with the gamepad, and the title is a nauseous mess. Resident Evil 7 will probably improve its framerate and controls before hitting the consumer market, but giving it the option not to be better sets a dangerous precedent: If the first console VR games to hit the market make players sick, that could severely damage public perception of virtual reality gaming in general.

This is dead on arrival. At least Vita lasted a year before it was pronounced dead.
>>
>>342106634
A lot of people said that about 3D graphics as well.
And they were absolutely right for 20 years.
I would say that the HTC Vive is probably the 3DO of the VR.
>>
>>342104409
Apparently the Resident Evil VR demo is a fucking nightmare of - 60 fps. Apparently the visual disconnect is so bad that most users experienced motion sickness.

Meanwhile other vr headsets recommend a minimum fps of 90+. And even then many people are still complaining about motion sickness.

Sony VR is gonna have to pull off a lot of miracles if it wants to avoid becoming Virtual Boy 2: Vomit Boogaloo.

>>
>>342107706
The point he was making was about the display technology. Both the Vive and Rift use Pentile screens while the PSVR's has normal RGB subpixels. That said, the PSVR's screen is a lower resolution.
>>
I want it for RE7 and Robinson, if theres drive club compatability that will be good too.

It's just still expensive, the only thing that's holding me back from VR
>>
>>342107232

Some sites like Easy Allies were saying there were some really hard resolution drops in games as well. Down near sub-720P levels in RE7 and some games were keeping frames but really struggling with dynamic resolution like RIGS. Jeff Gerstmann said the EVE Valkyrie version on PS4 looked awful compared to the Rift version he played during their VR streams as well.

PSVR somehow got a serious downgrade compared to previous showings with a lot of press being very negative on it this E3 which makes you wonder if they were showing it off first with PC's and now that they are showing it on real PS4's, the problems become apparent.
>>
>>342107943
Eyes are more responsive to green anyway. Pentile has better pixel fill than RGB as well.

There's still an extreme lack of detail in the resolution of the Rift and Vive, though. Reading text or seeing things over even moderate distances is pretty tough. Even if you can't see the RGB pixels of the screen, the game itself will be really blurry.

I have a Vive myself, the lack of pixel density starts to become apparent when you try looking at objects in the distance or fine details on objects up close like engravings on a gun.

The ergonomics, screen and optics might be better on PSVR than Vive. Resolution on PSVR is lower but their subpixel count is higher.

Still it wouldn't make a day and night difference the overall resolution stretched over around 110 degrees FoV is barely acceptable even on Vive.

Ergonomics is doubly important if you are going to be lugging the HMD on your head for hours. Vive + decent external headphones can get pretty pretty tiring on my neck after an hour of play especially if you are looking down a lot.

I thought roomscale wouldn't be a big deal until I tried it, biggest nuisance is the cable but the Vive is a solid proof of concept of what is possible with such technology.

PSVR will not fare well with roomscale since it only has a single camera making it more prone to occlusion and the cable is relatively short. Doesn't seem to be designed with it in mind, will likely be limited to only seated and standing.

My biggest concerns with PSVR are poor responsiveness on the PSmove controllers and the PS4 NEO lacking the necessary grunt "CPU" wise.

It is anyone's guess how PSVR will perform until some results from reputable sources are out.

So far the only VR game I like the look of (that includes Oculus, Vive, PSVR etc) is that game RIGS that Guerrilla Cambridge are making
>>
>>342113670
Yes that could make a huge difference comfort wise, I wish they though of something similar for the Vive.

Perhaps some third party peripheral manufacturer would release a better mounting system, it is pretty easy to take off the straps after all.

I think Sony put the cart in front of the horse however, they should've taken their time nailing down the hardware design on their next generation console designed from the ground up with VR in mind.

PSmove was not designed with VR's high tracking precision at low latency. People whom have tried it often complained the tracking on PSmove was crap. Though I haven't heard any complaints about the HMD tracking itself.

The Neo seems to be a quick desperate attempt at scrambling together a console with acceptable hardware specifications for VR. It was a poor move on their behalf to market the standard PS4 capable of handling PSVR specs smoothly.

But people will fall for marketing buzzwords like 4K and 120Hz without understanding what their system is actually capable of. Hopefully they don't treat PSVR like they did PSMove
>>
>>342114726
You know, the PSVR seems like the project that Sony was made for. They've got the mobile guys working on the screen, the TV/HMD guys supplying the basic mounting system and design, the camera guys doing the lenses and SCE itself bringing it all together with motion tracking and all the software side stuff. I hope the end product pays off as a consumer device, since it may well make or break the entire market.
