Personally what got me into fighting games was Hisotensoku, one of the Touhou fighters. I've dabbled with fighting games but they never really made sense to me. If I rented one, my little bro and I would just button mash until we got bored.
But like, fighting games have that image right? It's for hardcore players, you need to of started playing ever since Street Fighter 2 was in arcades or SNES, you would just get destroyed by anyone better than you and that would be everyone since you just started playing... I was content to never touch the entire fighting game genre and only played Hisotensoku because it was a Touhou game and I like Touhou.
Hisotensoku was the first fighting game I could actually comprehend and it's what got me into fighters. And since it was a fighting game on PC, it's also why I prefer using keyboards for fighting games.
Don't like controllers unless the control scheme for keyboards is fucked (which is sadly often now days, with these weird ports).
Even if I use a controller, I never use the joystick thing too. Can't use'em, too imprecise for me. I always end up ducking or jumping by accident.
