I listen to the game unless it's a really simple game with no real need for sound. Last game I played that I listened to music with was Super Meat Boy and I just put on whatever I wanted to listen to at the time and not anything specific.

I don't understand how people can play games with any music except the one the game already has. It usually doesn't fit the game, won't sync with when you enter combat or whatever and its distracting.
Then again I'm the kind of person that can do nothing when I'm listening to music.

Most of the time, I listen to the game's audio. I might put on music of my own in situations such as grinding for a drop in a hunting game or in a turn-based strategy I've already played to death. Most of my entire library is slow, easy listening so I can just shuffle and be satisfied.
An anomaly was when the audio bugged out in Torchlight 2 and I was forced to mute it. I decided to put on Ben Howard that day and the album looped as I played and now I think of Torchlight 2 whenever I hear a Ben Howard song.
