The french had these Iron Clad suits in trench warfare, but were way too heavy to traverse the mud and slopes resulting in many just falling over and drowing in the mud under their own weight.

I think people seem to be forgetting that battlefield 1 is basically following the same formula of battlefield 4. Let players have access to guns/gadgets of the era, regardless of faction availability and circulation. In the end Battlefield is just an arcade FPS so i'm not sure why people are getting mad over it

If you are sitting behind an MG.08 in a fortified position it makes sense to be up armored. You want your gunner to stay alive in the hail of shrapnel from grenades and god knows what else. If your suppressing fire isn't very mobile, its more cost effective to keep the operator alive, hence the use of armor.

Verdun is pretty good with weapons and weapon balancing. Overall though it's not a very accurate WW1 game in turns of gameplay, and it can be really repetitive, and that's because of the back-and-forth attacks instead of having battles be strictly asymmetrical attack and defense, like in Red Orchestra.

If you researched at all you would see that the bolt guns all have different 1 hit kill distances
there is one that kills close up like 5-10 meters
one that is a little farther than that, and one that is like medium range
The art of the bolt action will be finding this range and using it for one hit kills
Also battlefield is much more reliant on tactics than COD, in cod i equip a pistol and go to town on other players, just running around and killing, in Battlefield I communicate with my squad and take certain buildings and points to help my team win, I'm sure there will be balance in the game and apparently tanks are OP as of the pre alpha, so right now we shouldn't even be worried about the SMG's, they aren't long range, they are for noobs and you shouldn't care unless you are shit at the game

The entire American army was armed primarily with semi-automatic rifles and fully automatic man portable machine-guns by 1943.
Most other armies fielded literally millions of semi-automatic rifles, sub machine-guns, man portable squad automatic weapons.
WW1 was 95% bolt action rifles.
WW2 was more like 40% bolt action rifles, 60% everything else, with the bolt actions being phased out by the less desperate armies by mid-war.
Its a big fucking difference.

You spend 20 minutes working your way up to the objective getting shot by people from a distance, followed by about 7 minutes of actual intense combat as you take the objective in a massive push of tanks, infantry and air support.

I'm not sure what servers you were playing on, but there were always lulls in the fighting between objectives as the defending team struggled to re-position for the next wave. The fighting would gradually build to a crescendo that normally ended in under 10 minutes with the attackers bowling through and taking the objective, or the enemy team holding it until the attackers ran out of tickets.
There were always natural pauses as vehicles respawned and drove to the front, or as squad-mates grouped up to make another push.

What makes Red Orchestra great is the damage model it uses. If you get shot you're going to have to slow down and bandage up or risk bleeding to death.
In Battlefield you just keep going until your heath drops to zero. So unless bolt action rifles are a 1 shot kill (game play shows that they aren't) Bolt actions in BF1 are going to suck ass.
