Uh, you didn't forget about me, right guys?
I release in just two months and I'm totally a legitimate and worthy entry in the Metroid franchise, buy me if you don't want to see the series shelved for another 6 years.
>Nintendo shits out a generic arcade shooter with a Metroid skin and slaps the Metroid brand name on it
>people don't buy it because it feels like a slap in the face after the bullshit that was Other M
>investors and market researchers will throw their hands up in the air and say that people simply aren't interested in Metroid anymore
It has become so damn predictable how this industry works.
I remember when Nintendo devs said buying Star Fox 64 3D would support the idea of a new game in the series. That new game took five years (or ten since Command) and retreaded the ground of 64 in many ways.
I own and have played the crap out of every Metroid game, but that won't stop me from waiting for something competent instead of getting this.
nope
can't wait to pirate you
I'd rather have nothing
>>342035432
Why would the main series be shelved because of a game within a sub series failed?
>>342036472
The main series is already dead and buried, Prime was the only thing keeping it alive.
I'm having Chibi-Robo flashbacks.
>"buy this game or we'll abandon the series!"
Yeah sure, I'll buy an abysmal platformer that plays to absolutely zero of the IP's strengths and core mechanics when the 3DS has so many better games. Needless to say, the formerly $50 game can be found for $9.99 less than a year later (granted, without the amiibo).
>>342036779
Other M is the Skyward Sword of Metroid, Nintendo is looking into another direction for the mainline games. Prime ain't holding shit up but itself and clearly they're running out of ideas for the Prime series.
>>342036779
But Fusion and Zero Mission came out after Prime. Not to mention there was like a 7-8 year gap between Super and Prime.
>>342035432
how could I, I have you pre-ordered after all
>>342037027
Sakamoto is way too busy with the mobile crap to give even a single shit about finding new directions to go for Metroid.
>>342037027
>new zelda looks amazing
m-maybe theres still hope
>>342035432
>tfw this game is a masterpiece
>>342035432
Even Nintendo has forgotten about the game.
It wasn't shown in E3 and considering how the attempt of damage controlling from the Direct failed Nintendo's going to release it with no build up or hype whatsoever.
>>342037314
You do know EPD has to work on both mobile crap and NX games right?
>>342035432
I give them credit for attempting to flesh out the universe, as the story of Samus is going to start reaching cape shit levels if they keep going after Fusion.
However, this is not the way to expand said universe.
>>342037628
>Before Federation Force
Federation troopers are good and Space Pirates are evil
>After Federation Force
Federation troopers are good and Space Pirates are evil
>>342037857
>Federation troopers are good
Did you forget about Other M and Fusion?
>>342038053
Fusion had the Federation as corrupt but the troopers themselves don't seem so badI want to forget Other M
>>342037628
This hurts but I somewhat agree, just look what happened to Halo after Halo 4 shit really went cape shit with Halo 5.
>>342037605
EPD clearly is too small or incompetent now to work on anything but mobile shit animore.
The only things they produced in the last 5 years were Game&Wario (almost no content) Tomodachi Life (...), RH the Best+ (mostly a best of) and Miitomo.
How the fuck can you expect this shit of a studio or its director to work on Metroid anymore?
>>342038181
>This happened
>>342038336
EPD is merged form of EAD and SPD
It's Nintendo's largest divison
>>342035432
If you buy this game you're telling Nintendo you want more shitty shovelware like this.
>>342036906
What's this about chibi robo now? Something about zip lash?
>>342038587
Tanabe said Zip Lash was most likely Chibi Robo's last chance for a future
>Starfox, Metroid, and Paper Mario all died in the same year
HOW DOES NINTENDO DO IT?
>>342038693
Well shit
Was the game any good?
>>342037595
It's getting the mirror's Edge 2 deal.
Tons of exposure at first. Tons of backlash by fans. Then they shove it under a couch, and pray the remaining fanbase finds and buys it, while they quietly forget about the series ever existing.
>>342038336
>EPD small
EPD is massive due to Nintendo merging both EAD AND SPD. Just like Aonuma did with Zelda and got members from other teams to help make the game, Sakamoto will probably do the same for a mainline Metroid meaning we will have a new Director and Writer while Sakamoto will stay the Producer. Nintendo already stated that they wanted to push their younger developers into the bigger game projects so I can see that happening since Sakamoto, Miyamoto, and Aonuma all need replacements.
>>342038807
2016 is literally Nintendo's worst year since I can remember.
Nothing but disappointment and mediocre games.
>>342038181
It's a problem that series' run into, the ever present main protag power creep. A long standing series that tries to be expansion can't be one character focused. Halo is a good example, God of War is looking like it's going to be another.
>>342038461
Yeah I meant SPD.
The merger is irrelevant, they won't take people away from Mario to work on Metroid.
>>342038839
I liked it but It was pretty meh all around
The possible summer Nintendo Direct will be the last chance this game can get to attract interest upon release.
So far nobody likes the gameplay, atmosphere, designs, movement, music, and plot.
They need to do a massive 180 with a single demonstration and trailer or this game is boned
>>342038974
*and
This is why I hate my phone.
>>342038807
>Star Fox: 2006
>Metroid: 2010
>Paper Mario 2012
?
>>342039081
>They need to do a massive 180 with a single demonstration and trailer or this game is boned
They won't, Nintendo decides what it wants to do regardless of how people react to it. The game is going to bomb
>>342039031
They took away members of Monolith Soft to work on Zelda, what makes you think they won't do the same to another team who are not working on anything at the moment.
So shitheads, how is this one Miyamoto's fault?
Keep in mind, this game is designed by the same degenerate who produced Sticker Star.
I'm surprised they didn't show it off at E3. Makes me think they are reworking it up until the day before release.
>>342035432
>Nintendo didn't even show it at e3
>>342039563
It isn't. This game is canned DSi shovelware because Nintendo thought that Metroid fans wanted a shitty spin-off after YEARS of no games, with the last one being Other M.
If FF had been announced alongside a real Metroid, no one would be giving it as much shit as they are
>>342039579
It's coming out in August 19. 2016 for North America
It's too late for drastic changes.
No matter what they would say or demonstrate within the stream everyone would still be pissed.
Right now they have either gave up on the title completely or are trying to figure out how to present it upon release in a desperate fashion
Something tells me the only reason they went Chibi is to put Miis inside them in order for a lame ass "the hero is YOU" twist you can see coming from a mile away
I just know it
>>342039427
Zelda is Zelda, it gets at least 3 releases at year and is almost the only series they have left that shows some ambition. Of course they'll take people away from Xeno 2 to work on it.
Meanwhile literally nobody at Nintendo gives a shit about Metroid anymore.
>>342039579
They aren't
Two theories
A)They will cancel it
B)They are gonna release it quietly and everyone will forget about it
>>342038982
Paper Jam, Roboto and if you want to count Pokken were all pretty good.
I honestly liked SFZ, but I get why a lot of people didn't like it.
>>342035432
If they had not make them chibi I bet the fans wouldn't have bitched AS much.
It just looks terrible.
>>342039579
Jesus you're fucking retarded.
If the game was the same after 9 months since E3 2015 obviously it's not gonna change now.
I'm going to buy it if only to say, years from now when the series is dead and buried, that I collected every Metroid game.
>>342039396
One bad game isn't the death of an IP. A second game that cements the dev's idiocy/stubbornness as continuous is
>>342039563
Didn't Tanabe get strict "advice" from Miyamoto to simplify Paper Mario's world? Did that other shithead working on the game slurp Miyamoto's balls, while Tanabe went along with orders reluctantly? Or am I remembering wrong?
>>342039834
>They don't give a shit about Metroid anymore
You're assuming this, Other M was a failure and not even Nintendo knew if it was the right direction at the time. Sakamoto even stated back in 2010 that he didn't have any ideas at the moment of what to do next with the main series. Metroid Blast could have been a possible test bed for a new mainline game since Other M failed.
>>342040369
That only happened with Paper Mario, they other two had different people making different mistakes.
>>342040390
The problem with Miyamoto is that everyone is too afraid to shoot down his fucking terrible ideas.
He's the "senior" figure at Nintendo. His word is like law and people are too scared to tell him otherwise.
So yes, developers slurp his senile hanging balls and go with whatever he tells them to do. That's why Shitter Star was how it was.
>>342038693
>if the game sells poorly, the chibi-robo series is dead
>if the game sells well, they'll continue making mediocre platformers because that's "what the fans want"
>>342039563
>Miyamoto decides that women can't be protagonists unless you sex them up or make them crying feeling babies
>Other M tries this and fails, as does Super Princess Peach
>"filthy gaijin don't appreciate us, remove Samus as the protagonist"
I think everyone at Nintendo can take a little blame for this failure.
>>342040576
*the other two
The only true reason to buy a 3DS.

You call that good? No thank you. I prefer my games to not be 60 dollars, and I'd like them at 1080 p.
>>342040809
here's your (you)
>>342040390
Miyamote said it was too much like TTYD but keep it as an RPG
then Tanabe went full retard and thought it was a good idea to throw out major mechanics in favor experimenting with shit that appeals to no one
>>342040080
I need you to go ahead and look up the definition for facetious.
>>342037628
I'm just mad that out of the entire universe they chose to make a game about the most boring aspect, and then do so in the most boring way possible.
They could have built up some other bounty hunter which could come from anywhere, be anything, have whatever abilities they could imagine, or they could have made a game about one of the "enlightened" races like the Chozo with their spiritual bullshit, or they could have made a game about the wacky science adventures of the space pirates
But instead we get a game about the space army, and the one and only interesting part of that concept, the mechs, is invalidated because they're all turned into fucking toddlers that use the mechs just to be normal sized. It's dumb as hell.
>>342035895
It's funny because we already had a bad handheld Metroid spin off before but it was during, what I call myself, "the height of the Metroid franchise".
Releasing something like that when no major game was released in years and the last one had a terrible feedback is suicidal
>>342039784
You're talking about the Mii theory aren't you?
>>342039945
There's really nothing to gain from the Chibi aesthetic. NLG works well with emotion but the faceless Golem mechs and Federation troopers can't convey expression. Hell the game loses more because of the aesthetic since atmosphere is crucial in a Metroid game
>>342041242
I loved Metroid Prime Pinball..
I'll pirate and judge it.
Either way, AM2R is going to release soon.
>>342039081
They can't becuse the game's fucking shit.
Unless they made a single player mode with actual Metroid-like gameplay, it's DOA.
>>342041030
I would not have minded a Republic Commando type of Federation Force game
>As far as character design goes, the 3DS screens are relatively small. This means there's limitations to where cameras can be placed. A tall character or enemy could be difficult to display, while a stockier character, like the mech, fits the hardware and fits the game better. It makes it better to play. I'll admit, I thought at the start that it might lose the seriousness of the Metroid Prime series and become a little comical, but once I played it, I believe it delivers on the feel of the other game.

>>342041658
Yeah because because that totally stops Monster Hunter.
>>342040390
Everyone wants to pin the blame for SS on one specific person and but the reality is it was a team effort to make something so god awful.
Miyamoto saw them making a TTYD like game, and told them to can it and do something different, while also telling them to forget about making a big or interesting plot and to avoid making any new characters.
Tanabe, as far as I can recall, came up with the idea of dropping of experience in favor of just getting some stronger items as you go.
The inexperienced development team, having just been told not to use the past games as a crutch and to make up their own ideas, basically just took the stickers, their one and only original contribution, and expanded them to be the game's central gimmick since they weren't creative enough to do much else.
All of this bullshit combined in various horrible ways to make Sticker Star what it was. All of the people involved in this should be ashamed.
Would you play it?

Oh Tanabe...
I can't even read the whole thing. I'm getting distressed.
>>342042187

I know he's public enemy number 1 right now but don't go making shit up. Tanabe doesn't even have any power over Metroid beyond Prime, I don't think he has the jurisdiction to reject a pitch for a non-Prime Metroid game.
>>342042129
No, even when they first showed the game and we didn't knew it was Metroid, it looked like shit
>>342042129

>>342044906
I don't like how the levels are designed.
In the originals, they felt open ended, they had an exploration aspect to them. You got to the end of the level, missed a bonus or something, well you could go back to the beginning and explore it 90% of the time. It was like a 2D collectathon.
In Returns, a bunch of scripted shit happens in the levels that cuts them in chunks, and you can't backtrack. Meaning if you finish a level, you're fucked and you HAVE to play the level all over again and go through the scripted bullshit.
Besides, there's TOO MUCH shit to collect. Two or Three bonus coins and a hero coin was a perfect balance, it always felt good when I collected them. In Returns you have a ton of fucking puzzle pieces and you HAVE to collect the KONG letters too.
The world map in the original DKC games felt like travelling around places, in DKCR they just turned it into a NSMB shitty dot map.
The level variety is also ass. When I got to the 10th or so beach, forest or ruins level I already wanted to kill myself. Specially beach levels. The rehashed soundtrack doesn't help either.
>>342035895
>>investors and market researchers will throw their hands up in the air and say that people simply aren't interested in Metroid anymore

>Besides, there's TOO MUCH shit to collect. Two or Three bonus coins and a hero coin was a perfect balance, it always felt good when I collected them. In Returns you have a ton of fucking puzzle pieces and you HAVE to collect the KONG letters too.
I swear to fuck if you think this is a Masterpiece judging by what you just said I'm gonna rip your nuts off
>>342045723
Chibi Robo ZipLash was the franchise's last chance. And it was a completely different game.
Fire Emblem Awakening was also going to be the last Fire Emblem game if it didn't sell well.
>>342045858
Completely different things. In DK64 you could backtrack at least as it's a 3D game and the levels are open.
In Returns if you miss a puzzle piece you have to go through the level again and it's usually tedious because of the scripted sequences.
>>342042951
He's obviously being sarcastic
>>342045581
>In Returns you have a ton of fucking puzzle pieces and you HAVE to collect the KONG letters too.

All of these were fixed in TF.
Also I don't really know what you're going on about, I never found myself backtracking in old DK games.
I feel like the Metroid series is a prime example of why Nintendo games should NOT attempt to have a story. Now we get retarded spinoffs and excuses like "We don't know where to take the series after Fusion/Other M".
NOBODY FUCKING CARES ABOUT THE STORY. The worst games in the series are the ones with overbearing cutscenes and expositions (Fusion), autistic lore scanning (Prime), and unneeded attempts at character development (Other M).
Just give us Samus, an alien planet, cool enemies, and solid platforming, shooting, and exploration. We don't care about the Galactic Federation or Space Pirates beyond being an enemy. Keep it simple and give the series a Mario-like scenario where Ridley kidnaps the baby metroid every game. There is no need for story beyond setting up the game. Nintendo does this with every one of their other series, why does Metroid need this autistic shit?
>>342046329
He doesn't know what he's talking about, there were plenty of times in DKC that would block you from going back in a level. One way barrel cannons, lengthy automatic barrel cannon sections, high deops from a swinging rope you cant reach, platforming sections that keep you from turning around.

This times 100. Take your cinematics and story and plot and throw them in the garbage they belong. it's honestly why I hate any game that tries having a large story.
Even if your game has some gameplay, I'll just throw it out if you dare throw a massive bloated plot at me.
I actually think it looks fine.
Everyone I've talked to unanimously just accepts that it's going to be awful even though the developer's catalog has been mostly pretty good and furthermore, it's not Other M.

>>342046954
>>342046974
He has a point, story literally killed Metroid in this case. I'm not some autist against story in games but when said story is actively destroying a franchise then there's a problem.
>>342045581
TF is a lot better in level variety than the first one. Every level felt like it had its own unique setting. Compare the last level of world 5 with the first level of world 5 and you could hardly even tell they are both in the same world.
The scripted events are very creative and add a lot of artistic value to the environments, making the worlds seem more alive than the standard platformer where the environments and backgrounds are just barebones assets. It's true that it removes the ability to backtrack and explore, but this alone doesn't make it a bad game.
The collectables aren't that bad. You don't HAVE to collect the puzzle pieces though. Puzzles don't unlock anything important, only artwork and sound test stuff. The KONG letters are the only things you need to collect in order to unlock every stage. 4 mandatory collectables per stage isn't bad at all.
>>342046764
Fusion did the story telling right it just needed to be more opened. Other M was straight up garbage.

No he doesn't. He's a fucking mong.
Story does not kill games, story is not what causes a game to be cinematic, it's the presentation.
However, cutscenes do not entirely cause a game to be cinematic. You can have a game with few cutscenes be cinematic See: Survival Horror games.

Of course you have, of course.
>>342047498
Chibi Robo has always sold abysmal numbers, NONE of Skip's games sold well. However, we still periodically get Chibi Robo games. The dev teams thought "Hey, why don't we make this next game into a platformer, kids like those and they're relatively simple" They then said, if the game doesn't sell enough, there probably won't be another Chibi Robo.
It didn't do well at all. Series is probably dead and if you ask me, that's fine, as Kenichi Nishi isn't at Skip anymore.
>>342047142
Metroid would have faded away if Prime had not rescued the series.
How ironic that the series was tainted by Other M, a non Prime game
>>342035432
How to fix Federation Force so it no longer pisses the fans off:
>scrap the chibi garbage in favor of full models
>make the game have all the defining features of the Prime series (since it carries the Prime name)
>that means abandoned cities, dead bodies, ominous/fear inducing music, etc
>due to being a GFed and not Samus, even basic enemies like Space Pirate grunts would tower over you and be really dangerous
>gameplay is literally Republic Commando with co-op options
>game relies upon finishing objectives and making it out with your entire squad, as opposed to searching an open world
>no goddamn soccer or catapults
>>342047498
To be honest, this might be the last chance for us… I've continually thought about new ways to build this into a mainstream success. We've challenged ourselves in assorted ways along those lines, but I can't say we've found the answer yet. If the character can gain more recognition, I believe that we'll have a chance to produce another adventure-style game for a large number of people.

Sakamoto was already looking into making a sequel before Prime was even a thing. Prime didn't save shit when Fusion at the time named Metroid IV was already in the works for the GBA.
>color splash
>sf0
>federation force
>>342048265
Prime was a big success on the gamecube and help bring Samus back to the forefront of gaming culture.

>Splatoon was made by a bunch of younger guys and not by any of the old blood that made Nintendo famous

What happened
>>342048973
The old blood faced with rapidly advancing technology. Wind Waker HD was born out of the Zelda teams playing around with better hardware
>>342049435
And yet they still didn't fix the major issues of the game, like the boring ocean. The fast sail was basically a bandaid on something that needed surgery.
I wouldn't mind Metroid Prime Hunters HD.
>>342048926
>Fusion irrelevant
I will let you mold that over.
Was this even mentioned at E3 whatsoever?
Why are they developing so many Mario Party titles again? Mario Party 10 was shit, the one for 3DS was as well and now they are MAKING ANOTHER ONE FOR 3DS

????????
Do these even sell well or are they so cheap to be developed?? Perhaps if they would invest more in these games, and make them 1 per gen just like all other Mario spinoff, things wouldn't be looking so bad for the franchise.
>>342049627
I don't think fixing that game's more fundamental problems is really within the realms of what an HD remaster can accomplish.

Fusion and Prime 1 came out on the same day. Prime 3 came out three years after ZM.
With the increasing number of small developers splintering off from old companies and the current trend of crowd-funding, any notion of buying a game for hopes of a better game coming out later have been completely extinguished for me.
If Nintendo won't make it, some Indie dev will capture a similar feeling. Sure there will be a million shit ones for every decent one, but at least I only have to buy the good one that way.
>>342050627
I don't think the higher-up's at nintendo care about how their game plays, all they know is that a lot of people loved the original and there's new hardware that can run it better. If there's money to be made, they'll take every opportunity.
Would discussion of the game increase if they showed Hunters in a trailer?
>tfw rayman origins was a diamond in the rough, and stagnant franchises like metroid or sonic will never get a similar revival
>>342050675
I meant Prime as in Prime 1. Point more being that they were concurrent with Prime; Nintendo definitively proved it could still churn out 2D side-scrollers if it wanted to.
>>342051340
>I meant Prime as in Prime 1.
>Fusion and Prime 1 came out on the same day.
And Nintendo clearly don't want to churn out any more side scrollers given it's been 12 fucking years.
>>342051137
The hunters have always been more interesting to me than the federation. We've always known Samus as the bounty hunter who gets hired by the GF occasionally. Having other bounty hunters from different alien species made me want to learn about their backstories and abilities. A squad of humans in faux-varia suits just seems boring.
>>342037076

>>342041030
Playing through a Metroid game while being forced to rely on inferior technology would have been a really interesting concept if it wasn't handled by Captain Boring.
It would have been a great opportunity to introduce new upgrades into the series. It's hard to make something that tops the speed booster or space jump but if you're not playing as Samus that's not an issue anymore.
The troopers needed to be characters with their own unique abilities, not Samus-lite.
>>342043038
what do you mean?
Metroid needs to make a big comeback on the level of Prime 1, seeing as how Other M was an attempt to take the main series in a different direction which failed of course, I see that series needs to try it again but right. Nintendo needs to combine Super Mario 64 with Zelda OOT, Metroid Prime, and Metroid: Blast creating the ultimate 3D Metroid game. The game will take in all of Other M's criticism and finally be that proper Metroid in 3D that we've been waiting for. All of the enemies would look like the enemies from the 2D games, all of Samus weapons and abilities would work like they did in the 2D games and the game would go back to the classic way of restoring Samus's health. The game would also be the long awaited sequel to Metroid: Fusion.
>>342043012
this games looks pretty fun actually, but these people playing are awful, they're just running around shooting each other
>>342053427
Yes, pretty much. The Federation is boring but they could have still made an interesting experience by focusing in on what makes them different from the rest of the guys in the universe, which is mostly just that they're a bunch of a fairly ordinary soldiers going up against horrible monsters they're not really prepared for.
Instead they gave them robot suits to make them stronger which, while taking away what made them different, could still have been fun if they went in the opposite direction and made it a crazy action game about jetting around and blasting shit with your giant mech suit.
Instead the mech just makes them Samus sized and gives them some slightly lamer versions of Samus's technology, so the only thing that still keeps it in line with the Federation is the teamwork and mission based structure, neither of which seem especially fun.
>>342053642
The game would also be open ended like the 2D games and will have short cutscenes for bosses when they appear and die. With the story being handled more like Fusion where you barely would get much story because the gameplay would be the main importance of the game.
>>342035432
i'll grab a cia of it soon i guess.
>>342042776
I actually just watched some and this looks fun. Thanks! You just convinced me to buy it.
>>342053642
Do this, but make it a Prime-style game instead. Make it also a true evolution of sorts of the Prime formula as well. Switch up the gameplay to make it more fast like the 2D games, with some parkour platforming elements ala Mirror's Edge (but only to the extent that the platforming more strongly resembles the 2D games).
Make maybe another game like that or so until it gets old, then go full BotW.

>>342054306
The Prime style has been overused and has become stagnant. People been asking for a true third person Metroid for a while, showing a Metroid game like this to the fans and they will go crazy in a good way. No offense to the Prime series but they have clearly ran out of ideas for it.
>>342054791
A third person Metroid will never be accepted after Other M. Even if it's well designed, fans will see it and immediately want nothing to do with it.
>>342054413
That's irrelevant since there will never be another proper Metroid game.
You are now in charge of making a Metroid installment taking Other M's place in timeline.
You can do anything as long as it has Adam and his sacrifice.
You are given authorization to characterize Adam to your liking as well as long as it makes sense.

>>342054053
How do Federation troopers solve a morph ball puzzle? How do they get through flooded areas or superheated rooms? What's their strategy for dealing with really strong enemies?

>>342035432
The only thing that everyone hates about this game is the chibi style
>>342055106

>>342054903
Other M was a turn off from the beginning with it's trailer showing Samus throwing enemies all over the place, grappling them to blast them in the face, and having a cinematic experience. Nintendo was having trouble trying to convince people it was a Metroid game so at E3 2010 they tried to show a trailer that showed what Nintendo liked to call Metroid elements but the reality was it wasn't a true Metroid game.

>>342054791
It's been almost 10 years since the last Prime game. I mean shit, I'd love a third-person Metroid game but I wouldn't be mad at all if they returned to the Prime style but tweaked it either.
It's been so long since a new Prime game, that it'd be glorious to see a new return of that style of game, but with some reworkings and taking advantage of modern hardware. Imagine a FP game with the Speed Booster, or an area with good lava effects, so you can go underneath lava like in the 2D games. So much potential there.
And if they DID go 3D, they shouldn't go in the Other M-style. Make the shooting third-person, over-the-shoulder, pull the camera back to something like Uncharted or Tomb Raider when platforming, but without the autoplatforming.
>Nintendo takes a look at how Metroid how has numerous bounty hunters
>Starts thinking of ideas how to implement them in a future Metroid
>They think of the potential and ponder>They make a fucking Overwatch clone
>>342056271
>>They make a fucking Overwatch clone
Are you saying that's a bad idea? That's not that far from the first Hunters, really. It's a marvelous idea for a spinoff, or just a potential Hunters 2.
>>342054968
Hire a single indie developer desperate to work for a company to do it for peanuts (with guarantees he can make it as arty, socially progressive or cinematic as he wants so he'll not want to miss out on the "opportunity") and then funnel all the remaining funds into my own pocket.
Fuck fixing the series, I want to be rich.
>>342056097
They should not go third person shooter they should go third person though. Meaning combine the gameplay of Super Mario 64 with Zelda OTT. The game would be open ended, have secrets and puzzles and lock on like 3D Zelda and will have the 3D platforming of Mario but Samus would move far faster then Link and Mario. The game will essentially be a 3D Mario and Zelda game but instead of a sword you would have an arm cannon.
>>342039031
Are there even people at Nintendo that are good at making complicated 2D games?
Fusion and Zero Mission were handled by the Wario Land people. Who do they have now?
>inb4 Retro
Sakamoto will literally have to die for this to happen.
>>342056609
No. I should be able to AIM in a Metroid game.
Honestly when you think about it, the aiming aspect of 3D FP Metroid games is pretty inline with the 2D games, since aiming is a crucial part of the combat in those games as well.
>>342056751
Retro could very well make a good 2D Metroid these days.
Failing that, maybe Nintendo could get them to make a new 3D Metroid, and actually get with modern times and get an indie studio to make a new 2D Metroid.
>>342042187

>>342056271
I'd buy a TF2/Overwatch type game featuring Metroid characters. Splatoon worked for Nintendo, doesn't sound so bad.
What if they gave us a real Pirates vs Federation Marines game set in the prime universe on the NX? You could play as all the different pirate and marine types (Pirate Aerotrooper, Commando, Grenadier, GF Demo Trooper, etc) and they could expand the lore. You could use a similar GUI to the prime games and it could be like a Republic Commando style campaign.
Would be pretty neat DESU.
>>342057107
Their other Nintendo games I mean.
Federation Force feels more like their non-Nintendo stuff.
>>342057813
>play as pirates

>>342057107
>I wonder if this game is just mercenary work for them.
This is exactly how it feels. I don't think that NLG are happy working on this game.
Nintendo should notice how good are their second parties and let them work on better projects. Or, at least, give them more freedom.
From footage we've seen it just looks like a boring mission run game
>>342056751
Sakamoto has said multiple times, RECENTLY EVEN, if Retro wants to make a new game, they are free to. He doesn't want to make Metroid anymore.
>>342035432
The major problem with this game is that they made a 'kiddy' looking game thats part of a franchise that was inspired by 'alien'.
its like if they made a saturday morning cartoon where ripley has a pet alien mascot and the get into all types of misadventures.
>>342056838
In this game you aim exactly like you do in a Prime game which is the same way you aim in a 3D Zelda game, what's the problem?
>>342057906
>>342057813
i feel like people just want to play pirates because their logs and science experiments were always so bat-shit crazy and threw basic safety into the wind, and people really want to explore that.
Federation Force itself is perfectly fine, everyone who has played it says it plays very well and it's quite fun, the art style suits perfectly fine a handheld (seriously who wants a realistic FPS metroid game on a fucking toaster like the 3ds?) and the premise is perfectly fine for a coop game.
The problem though isn't Federation Force, it's the Metroid franchise, the reason Federation Force gets so much hate is
1: Nintendo's showing at E3 2005 was abysmal, everyone was expecting a new big game (with Metroid in line) and none was shown, instead we got an entire show of spinoffs from established franchises.
2: After Other M everyone was expecting Nintendo to come out with a new Prime game as damage control, instead we get teased to fuck with Federation Force and a Retro Prime is still MIA.
3: People are worried that Metroid has been relegated to a 3rd-tier franchise after the failure of Other M like F-Zero.
4: Retro has been working on a game for like 4 fucking years and nobody knows what it is, meanwhile the only Metroid game we have coming out is a 3DS spinoff.
Federation Force itself as a game has nothing to do with why it is getting so much hate. It's simply an avatar for Metroid fans to project their displeasure with Nintendo's handling of the franchise and Other M hate onto.
I say this as a fucking crazy huge Metroid fan. I will make a bet we will be seeing a Prime game come the Nintendo NX show later this year and suddenly Federation Force will be accepted as perfectly fine.
Did anyone play Federation Force at PAX East?
>>342056751

And you can be sure it would look gorgeous.
>>342058478
To be fair, the Prime Trilogy moved away from that.
I really feel like a new MP game or a third-person, OTS Metroid should move away from the lock-on and give you free-aim.
Even still, I'm not sure how your game idea would work.
>>342058485
You KNOW Nintendo would just fuck it up though.
>>342058675

splatoon wasn't completely bad even if aiming with the Wii U pad is wonky. Nintendo probably doesn't have the multiplayer prowess needed to pull it off, but running around as an Aerotrooper in a team based game would be really really fun. Its not like the Metroid fanbase is not the type for this sort of game either. If it was well designed and was fun to play I doubt there would be much bitching about how there would be no Samus or it not being a main series game.
>>342058973
My game idea ain't new this is the same exact idea that Nintendo used to create the original Metroid. They took Super Mario Bros. And The Legend of Zelda and combine them into one. So how will combining 3D Mario and 3D Zelda into one not work?

1: That was Tanabe, not Sakamoto. Sakamoto has nothing to do with Prime.
2: He also mentioned that any game involving Samus and Sylux would have to be made after Fed Force and would take several years to make. Assuming they started work on it immediately after FF launched, the game would still likely be 2-3 years away.
>>342060037
Difference is that this game would have all of Samus's 2D abilities working exactly like they did in the 2D games.
>>342041658
But the DS screens were even smaller and it worked for Prime Hunters
>>342058485
I think something kind of like Kerbal Space Program could be neat. Though that's because I know that Kerbals are the species that eventually evolved into Space Pirates and you cannot convince me otherwise.
Just something where KSP is one of the modes and you have other areas of SCIENCE to explore would be really fun. Pirate Biology being a mini-Spore creature creator, Pirate Engineering having morph ball experiments, Pirate Weapons Development being a nonstop party of crazy. I don't know who could possibly pull that off, but it's nice to think about.
>>342060339
>Difference is that this game would have all of Samus's 2D abilities working exactly like they did in the 2D games.
This kind of thing is why I said the Prime gameplay needs to be reworked. Let's have a space jump that functioned closer to the 2D games instead of being just a double jump. Let's have a screw attack that worked differently. Let's have the Speed Booster and so on.
>>342060037
both posts were mine lol, but for the later post I was replying to how the other anon said nintendo would somehow fuck it up (hence how they lack ability) and then I went onto a tangent.
My only fear about a spinnoff FPS is that people would make either comparisons to other games and it would be toted around as a competitor by the non metroid audience (Halo if it had vehicles and TF2/ Overwatch if it went down the team shooter road).

>>342063442
Really this game should have been shelved until after Nintendo could get its shit together. The timing on it was what really ruined it, in multiple ways.
>Sakamoto murders Metroid, leaves its corpse in Tanabe's lap while he takes a vacation off in Tomodachi land. Suddenly, regardless of whatever his original plans were, the future of Metroid is entirely on Tanabe's shoulders
>All the high quality teams that would be suited for Metroid are busy with other shit
>Only team available is Next Level, a team that, while talented, is a completely terrible choice for Metroid because their talents have nothing to do with what Metroid is about. They can only do cartoony shit, sports games, other linear stuff, etc
>Can't make a console game because Nintendo wants to bury the Wii U and pretend it never existed, forced to make a handheld game
Basically Tanabe couldn't have gotten a proper Prime game made and even if he were forced to make a weird handheld spinoff there was no way he could have made it any better because no one else was available.
>>342054676
>9+ years gap since the last good game
You mean 12 years.
>>342064129
>>342064297
Yes it was put on hold. Until it could no longer be put on hold.
Not really his fault that no one else managed to make a good Metroid game in the meantime.
It's not as if this was ever planned to be anything but an aside kind of spinoff. It's not as it was intended as a mainline instalment.
And it likely would be appreciated had it been released in between two good Metroid games as well.
>>342064556
Space Jump could be tweaked so instead of a double-jump, it could be upgraded to a triple or quadruple jump, in addition to a jetpack maybe? Or maybe just a jetpack that functioned similarly to the 2D Space Jump.
Speed Booster would work just fine considering that a lot of modern first-person shooters have similar movement systems in their games. Halo 5 has the boost ground pound mechanic that's kind of similar. Mirror's Edge has an effect where the further you run interrupted, the faster you move, and there's a certain weight to it. It could work like that.
>>342064951
My nigga.
>>342064556
In Metroid Prime 2's multiplayer, when one player uses the double jump, other players see the one jumping as doing a somersault, while the original player just sees themselves jumping normally in first person. So it's kind of implied that when you jump in Metroid Prime you actually are doing doing the spinning somersault jump, you just don't see it.
I think the Space Jump would just be an infinite jump in that case, or work like the Gravity Boost and be a jetpack.
>>342064845
At least Tanabe can say that circumstances screwed him over.
Other M was Sakamoto being given every possible advantage.
>>342065352
Wait, I never knew this.
>>342065775
Yeah man, it's true. Not him but I remember that shit.
>>342065654
If it makes you feel better if Sakamoto would have chose a better team, we could have had a more opened Metroid game. Other M was linear because Team Ninja wasn't good at making an open ended/ open world game.
>>342065654
This is the main reason why I don't get these people acting like Tanabe is a bigger failure than Sakamoto.
I'm not gonna say Tanabe is a genius or anything, but from what I've seen, his games turn out about as well as the teams that are working on them. He mainly just seems to throw out concepts and leaves it to the team to make them work. I frankly don't think Tanabe is the deciding factor between a good game and a bad one. Sakamoto was very clearly the reason Other M was a disaster.
>>342066394
Holy shit!
>>342046764
>The worst games in the series are the ones with overbearing cutscenes and expositions (Fusion), autistic lore scanning (Prime),
Nah, you can fuck right off. Fusion and Prime were good games and the stories added even more atmosphere.
The Metroid franchise was Nintendo's Iron Man until recently, meaning it was a series which was almost never offensively bad in quality. A lot of the trashtalking on post-Super didn't even start up until Other M shit the bed and people began looking for some kind of pre-existing condition to blame it on. If you're going to blame the decline of the series on something or someone, blame Sakamoto for completely missing what the franchise is about, and/or blame Nintendo's decade-long focus on marketing to Japanese housewives, 8-year-olds, and otaku waifufags. Nintendo being incredibly out-of-touch is what's crashing their company, and Metroid has simply been a casualty of that.
>>342047142
That doesn't mean you're right.
>>342047187
The story isn't what fucked up Other M and FedForce. It's the near-complete departure from what made the series beloved: Atmosphere, exploration, upgrades, and a sense of being alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous place.
>>342066791
> get a load of this faggot who thinks prime is canon

I like Metroid Prime's control scheme.
>>342066791
>The Metroid franchise was Nintendo's Iron Man until recently, meaning it was a series which was almost never offensively bad in quality.
I don't even know if this is true regarding Iron Man but I agree completely.
Also scanning added a LOT to the series' lore and atmosphere and it, along with environmental storytelling and maybe light cutscenes every blue moon, is the best way to tell a story in a Metroid game.
>>342066791
The franchise was about platforming not fps. See also oddworld cashing in on the fps craze destroying the mechanics of the genres their predecessors created

I had the idea to make it separately as a gaiden [side story], but wouldn't it be a cop-out to call it a gaiden? Because of that, I consulted with Tanabe, and things fell into place very naturally. The local staff worked on it really hard, it serves as part of the series, and I think they completed it very well."

The one thing NLG does extremely well is sports games.
>>342069925
Fun fact Blast Ball was actually made to be a tutorial for Federation Force
>>342067354
True, but Prime was an attempt at adapting Metroid's platforming formula to first person, and a successful one by general consensus. It's completely fine if Prime wasn't your cup of tea, but you really can't fault the series for all the effort that was put into it. Other M, on the other hand, fucked up what it tried to adapt because Sakamoto and Team Ninja didn't know what people liked about the series.
>>342068272
Nobody wins Anon
Nobody wins
I know this has almost no chance of happening, but what would your reaction be if Federation Force was actually good?
I hope when Nintendo show off the NX platform for the first time they reveal a mainline Metroid game that is a sequel to Fusion. I don't care if it's a 2.5D or if they turn it into a third person combination of 3D Mario and Zelda.
>>342074192
I'd be glad to have a good game and then slightly saddened by the fact that it will never sell because it came out at a bad time and happened to somehow look like garbage in all of the footage of it.
>>342074319
>sequel to Fusion
Why does everyone want this?
I think Metroid needs a reboot. I'm getting tired of them jumping through hoops to try and connect each new game. Metroid should just go Zelda style and have all the games set in their own canon, with the odd sequel here and there.
>>342074192
I'd think about recommending it to support good games and the Metroid license but people would just call me a drone and a shill.

Everyone here seems to pretend that you can't know how a game will be before release. In some cases this is true, you might not know about some meaningful features, or the trailer footage might just make it look worse or better than it is.
But in this case we can clearly see from both trailer footage and a lot of straight up gameplay footage that this game is shit. There's no hidden feature that could make this from crap to good.

I don't know if I should feel happy that I lived through the 90s and early 2000s and got to experience gaming's best years, or if I should wish I didn't experience it and thus not be disappointed by how bad it's all become.
>>342074780
Because it ended on a cliff hanger. When a story never had a proper ending it just eats a person up.

>>342076184
Huh.
>>342035432
Just like with Star Fox Zero, I would rather see the series shelved than tell Nintendo that this is the level of quality that I am willing to accept from this series.
The way I see it, if Nintendo keeps destroying their classic IP, eventually they're going to run out and all they'll have left is Mario and Pokemon. Maybe at that point they'll have to have a management re-structuring and some new people will come in, who want to bring back Nintendo's classic franchises that they battered and abused for the last decade and treat them with some respect. It has to get worse before it can get better.
>>342076567
>Wikipedia
Xenoblade is a separate property entirely to Xenosaga.
>>342076567
They are legally separate, Xenogears and Xenosaga are straight up owned by different companies. The plots aren't even related in any way. A fucking Wikipedia article isn't hard evidence. The only thing tying them together is the prefix and the guy that made them.
This is like trying to argue that Mighty No 9 is part of the Mega Man series.
>>342057906
Hell yeah. Science time.
>>342055106
The most frustrating thing about the game is the premise is good.
Republic Commando, ODST, these are similar concepts that this game could have built off of. Instead of playing as the high powered Samus Aran, you and a group of troopers have to use their wits and teamwork to handle a serious threat.
Imagine the thick atmosphere and art direction you saw in Super Metroid and Prime, but things are much more dangerous now since you're just a run of the mill marine. Lay in some good sound design, and you've got a winner.
Instead, everything is cute and colorful, the music is a wall of sampled synth mush that's gonna be lost amongst all the explosions and blaster sounds, and to top it all off, the tension is all fucked, because you're not a regular federation soldier, you're some guy in a 20 foot mech.
It's like some serious monkey paw shit.
>>342077291
>Xenogears and Xenosaga are straight up owned by different companies.

>>342077973
They are legally separate intellectual properties.
Seriously, I can't make it any simpler than this. You might as well start trying to argue how Super Metroid is a sequel to Super Mario Bros because of the word "Super".
>>342077962
My nigga. This post exactly.
Just imagine an action-adventure game in the vein of the Metroid Prime games, only you're not even remotely as powerful as Samus, so it errs on the survival side of things, maybe even survival horror-like, sort of like F.E.A.R. or something.
But it's done in literally the worst way possible.
>>342078446
Not him but couldn't it be like a Devil May Cry-Bayonetta situation? I've never played a single Xeno game, sorry.
You guys are aware that Nintendo plans to make future Metroid games right?
This game exists for lore purposes
The sales of this game won't do shit
Star Fox 64 3D Sold like shit, despite Miyamoto claiming it was to test, but he still make Star Fox Zero
>>342077973
Nigger, I have beat every single Xeno game. The abomination that is XCX is a stand alone game. XC is a stand alone game. Xenosaga is a stand alone trilogy. Xenogears is a stand alone game. This is canon.
You can use your own head canon where they are all related if you want. In my head canon XS is a loose prequel to XG, taking place thousands of years later, XC is a seperate universe from XG/XS, and XCX is a loose sequel to XC, taking place thousands of years later
>>342078759
>Star Fox 64 3D Sold like shit
It sold just under a million copies, not factoring in digital sales. That's not bad for a port.

>>342078629
That's pretty much exactly what it is. They're spiritual successors. Similar but legally distinct and are thus forced to use completely different settings and characters.
Maybe a more apt comparison would be the Souls games. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are technically not the same property since one is owned by Sony and the other by Namco but a lot of people consider them part of the same series anyway because of similarities between them, including the name.
>>342078978
When did I say cartoony can't be atmospheric? Don't put words in my mouth.
Cartoony games can be atmospheric if done right. Anything can be anything if done correctly, but there is no real attempt at 'atmosphere' in this game. It's a light hearted co-op shooter that really tries nothing to capture any of the concepts I mentioned in my post.
There's also the fact that Metroid has never been cartoony. Never in this sense. You can pull up the Zelda argument with Wind Waker, but Zelda inherently was cartoony. Go and look at A Link to the Past. It's bright, its colorful. Aesthetically it's not a Souls game, or something that intentionally tries to make itself dreary. Wind Waker was a departure, but it wasn't a full 180.
>>342078978
You'd have a point if the art style of FF conveyed any sort of serous atmosphere at all. But it's some weird, generic chibi shit.
>>342079062
But weren't Xenosaga and Xenogears heavily implied to be connected story-wise despite being separate series technically? That was my point. What about Xenoblade?

>>342079397
I've seen roughly an hour of straight gameplay of Federation Force.
A chunk of it was shooting balls into catapults in a pseudo game of soccer, and another part of it was shooting a bullet sponge reactor for a tedious length of time.
The movement is slow and clunky, the shooting looks bog standard, and aesthetically, it's just plain bad in a multitude of senses.
>>342079397
Next direct is their last chance for interest.
The presentation has to go all out.
I don't think NLG would be fired but I do think they would be stuck with Strikers and Luigi's Mansion and maybe Punch-Out if they're lucky.

Fedforce was a project that was delayed but fucked over because Other M wasnt well received, they want to make a team based shooter based around the federation but your crying like twats because MUH ARTSTYLE and Other M failed to keep the series from a drought, your still getting a new game fuckboi

>>342082624
What do you really expect them to do? The games already too far into development to change anything, and when the main complaint is "we want another, completely different kind of game to come out alongside it" there's absolutely nothing that can be done to address what the fans want.

To spend some of the 12 months they had inbetween the first and second trailers to improve the graphics or re-do some of the designs like the Troopers. Maybe axe Blast Ball and add a proper Deathmatch?
Maybe create some content that might actually help to sell us on the game. I wanted to fucking scream when I saw them talking about holy trinity party dynamics as the core of the game.
>>342083580

>Here's some things we've changed!

Really, pull your head out of your own ass for a moment and look at this realistically.
They dedicated a segment of a direct to explaining what the game was about. If you took that as an insult then that's just because you were purposefully looking to be insulted, and probably already felt insulted by the existence of the thing and just wanted more reasons to be mad.

You did, because you were keeping up with it. Anyone who hadn't been closely watching the interviews and treehouse footage wouldn't know anything of what they discussed in that direct.
>But their callous disregard for what I want is basically insulting.
And there's no realistic way they could have addressed whatever it is you wanted in that direct because the things you want essentially require a brand new game which can't just be made over night.
Again, I'm not saying FF looks good at all, because it really doesn't, but there's no immediate way Nintendo could respond to most of these complaints short of announcing a new Metroid that likely wouldn't see the light of day until, at the absolute minimum, the announcement of their next console, but probably even later than that.

>the things you want essentially require a brand new game which can't just be made over night.
Changing the design of the troopers isn't a brand new game. Committing to a serious shooter with a real level of challenge and difficulty isn't a brand new game. Adding a death match instead of their retarded soccer game isn't a brand new game.

But that's what we wanted in the first place. No one ever believed they would make a Federation only game, but that would have been the game to copy.Maybe as prequel to MP Echoes.

Probably, Nintendo isn't exactly up to date with a lot of things.
I don't mean to sound like an apologizer, since Nintendo did fuck up and this game looks bad, I just feel like fans have been having the most bizarrely personal reaction to it and I just can't understand it, even as a fan of the series.
I saw the reveal and thought it looked like crap and didn't really expect or hope for anything more of it, and I doubted from the start that Nintendo would be open to making any big changes to it since the generation is practically over for them so they probably wouldn't want to risk delays.
Not that any changes would really help, since the game is doomed anyway.

It threw out all the RPG elements, original characters and storylines, and switched the battle system to relying solely on a limited resource that wasn't actually limited, with trial and error superweapons that beat bosses for you. The humor went from character and situation based to consisting almost entirely of jokes and puns about paper.
So yes, people didn't like it very much.

Ah I see. Thanks.
Guess I'll fire up the emulator and replay thousand year old door and super paper mario

>Federation Force itself as a game has nothing to do with why it is getting so much hate
Not true, it looks boring at the best of times and at the worst it is four people trying to navigate and shoot in a tiny corridor

What I think is worse is that:
>Game sells surprisingly well
>Investors decide this is because of the direction series has taken
>Here's Federation Force 2, your welcome :^)
