It's a more pricy option but I'd suggest buying a New 3DS, because when hacked it can play:
DS games through pretty much every flashcard (even the original R4 if you use a launcher)
GBA VC games using pretty much native hardware
3DS games (with better perfomance)
SNES VC games
NES VC games
GB VC games
GBC VC games
Game Gear VC games
Whatever retroarch for 3DS supports
As a side note, you can inject roms to be run through virtual console.

I don't think the original R4 works on DSI, just the original DS and DS lite. If you do go that route, don't use the original firmware, either; woodR4 is far superior (last I checked. Which was at least 5 years ago.)

But instead, consider getting a 3DS (with custom firmware to play 3ds games) + a flashcard to play DS games.

And get a PSP with custom firmare.
