The game is an inherent derailment of the plot.
Its based on a what-if alternate scenario in which after Kirito beats Heathcliff, rather than the game ending, it just glitches out and continues.
Its actually a much better game than it has any right to be. This is evidenced by the fact that the other SAO games that have come out since then are as just about as terrible as you would expect from an anime tie in game, which makes Hollow Fragment even better in reterospect.

You'll come to realize that Gary Stu protagonists work much better in video games than in television shows/movies.
