which i think was a hidden religious meaning.

gnosticism and a few others outright say our physical world is an illusion, it's not real, and only exists because we observe it. holographic universe theory confirms that.

we are in a shitty mmorpg with tons of microtranslations and unfun quests, not to mention character gen is terrible. no sliders or numbers, everything is ran with a random number generator.

Horrible voice acting; so bad it's good.
>>
A really good RPG with a very fun, deep and customizable combat system that can offer plenty challenge and has tons of optional side content, a pretty deep item creation system, solid enjoyable characters with strong voice acting and a plot that begins very strong and poses interesting moral questions that you want to see develop.
Then at a point near the end the plot shits the bed with a twist that ruins a ton of buildup and intrigue and tosses most of the potential for something completely different that it doesn't do well at all.
The combat's still fun enough to carry it through to the end though, and the post game has an insane amount of extra stuff to do. Also difficulty levels and optional characters/endings for replayability on top of that.

Wasn't that just doing a dumb mini game and save scumming because of RNG bullshit and getting items you needed was a giant, time-consuming pain in the ass that was impossible without a guide?

Did you not read the post?

You don't spam 1 or 2 artes in Tales combat at all.
SO's combat is literally relying on spamming whatever best skill you currently possess.

>>
>>342007076
Not really, you didn't need to savescum, if you get the right inventors and have it set up right you can tell what they're going to make based on how much it costs. Most of it is finding and setting up the inventors. It takes some time but it's cool seeing what you come up with next, and you can do a shitton with weapon synthesis.

>>342001743

SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE ON PSN ALREADY.
>>
>>342001743
Fun times. A JRPG with a huge amount of content in postgame. Customization is pretty good if you can get around the RNG (which is doable). Most of the characters, save for one or two, have a bunch of builds that are fun.

Combat can be repetitive at times, but that's my only gripe with it. Everything else is solid.
>>
>>342008292
Thing about the combat is that there's so many viable skills that you can change your playstyle entirely whenever you feel like it. It's also nice that they actually really noticably improve as they level.

>>
>>342009136

>>342010956
Personally I've only played Xillia, but there were a ton of arte combinations with just about every character that were inherently spammable and the only reason I didn't use only them was because I just didn't want to. I liked the hyper armour combo breaking mechanic on the bigger bosses to stop that kind of thing at least, but SO3 has something similar.

SO 5 Killed itself by being 20 hours long, not having any other planets despite being called Star Ocean and bringing negative attention to itself with "censorship".
I was honestly looking forward to it until I found out it's only 20ish hours

Fun gameplay

Trainwreck story that sends shockwaves of it's trainwreckness through the rest of the series.
>>
>>342012072
The 20 hours thing came from some guy that didn't even read Japanese so he probably skipped over a bunch of text and didn't talk to anyone in towns. Probably rushed through the game too.

It's definitely short enough to be a flaw but I don't buy the 20 hour crap.

I still haven't tried it yet except for testing that it works. I still had my 60+ hour save too. I'll get to it soon enough. Hopefully I can still like it after loving Tales of combat.
>>
>>342012140
Yeah they're much later on but the way people talk about Side Kick they sound like you should only use that through the whole game. Even before that though I liked Blade of Fury way more, the dodge always felt finicky and Blade is fast as hell so it can interrupt.

Actually, you're wrong.

Every SO Game/Universe has tie-ins. Star Ocean 1 and 2 had shared characters between them and took place in the same Universe. And with the PSP remakes they included Welch who talks about the Creators from time to time.

So at the very least SO 1 and 2 are part of the "It's a videogame" universe.

Yep they included her as a playable character in the PSP remakes. For SO:First Departure she talks about going to their world as a Player in order to adventure and meet cute guys.
>>
>>342016523
Every Star Ocean game is inside the game universe.

The "real" world outisde the game is the 4d space.

>>342016727
Everything changed.

Its gone from a real place to a arbitrary game place.

Everything you do in 1 and 2 is not real. It was just a game. The struggle of it all is just whatever.

You know its entirely possible that he 3rd game is modeled after the "real" universe and that she could have been made and designed to fulfill a certain purpose?

People model video game people after real life people all the time.

>>
>>342017754
>that projecting
Just because you feel it invalidated what you did in those games, does not mean that others share your opinion. There are plenty of reasons as to why a character who supposedly previously existed is now in a video game.

Its almost like you've never seen those sports games with real people modeled in game.

It's easier to deal with when you consider that the world of Eternal Sphere is so advanced that it's basically on par with real life, which raises the question of whether it's ok to just delete it when you think there's a bug. That's actually what the game was aiming for with it's story in the second half but the execution meant it fell somewhat flat. Basically that's the real failing of the twist, that it doesn't really phase the party much and carries no weight despite how much it should when looking at it from an outward perspective. For an example of that kind of twist done right, see Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2.

>>342018101

Director of the game and one of the head developers said that the game plays more like 3 than 4. As a matter of fact they said that the game as a whole feels more 3 than 4. Like they admit that 4 was a step in the wrong direction.

As for user reviews from Japan? The Japanese audience didn't like the real time character switching mechanic and the story didn't live up to their expectations.
>>
>>342018101
Do you mean gameplay-wise? From what I've seen it looks pretty similar to 3 in most ways, but they removed the Fury system in favour of a guard button. Light and heavy attacks work the same, but you now can cancel the standard attacks into each other and get the cancel bonus too. The bonus gauge is back and fills by stocks, which you can spend on a big flashy super attack, of which each character has their own unique one (Fidel has Ethereal Blast, to give you an idea of how super). If I remember right, the bonus gauge now only goes down if you die or your guard is broken, which I'm happy about because FUCK random crits killing your streak. I don't know whether or not MP death is in though.
>>342018893
Not in my main party, but I tried him out quite a bit. He's shit which is a shame cause he's so cool, but he's still plenty usable. Feels so weird that they made the grizzled samurai guy more of a mage though, but his physical skills are awesome.
