There's many instances of people involved in the project being reluctant to outright confirm it as a PS4 exclusive, including during interviews with the game directors themselves, where they'll say shit like "for now" or "not decided yet".

The way the boss fight plays out along with the music is really cool, but it's also kind of disappointing in that every single time you play this battle, it will be exactly the same. It's probably the reason the boss shows no reaction to being hit, so it can keep up with the musical cues.

I think you may have misinterpreted something. They stated in an interview that the Father would feel more natural and relatable than Brother because in reality, the odds are high that a real brother would grow bitter towards his sister.
That isn't actually what happened in the game. The dialogue is barely any different at all, which is why Father Nier has that corny power of friendship, we're friends aren't we scene with Kaine in the Aerie, something that feels more natural with Brother Nier.

It's not that they're fans of Nier's gameplay, it's that they're fans of Taro's storytelling. The gameplay will always be second to this fanbase. Many of us suffered through the horrendous gameplay of Drakengard after all, while Nier and Drakengard 3 had salvageable gameplay, at best, and the latter had AGGRESSIVE frame drops while both looked like dog turds, visually.
We've kind of joked about getting Platinum to do the next game's combat so there'd be good gameplay to go with the compelling, strange, dark, sad and disgusting universe Taro's built up, but I think most of us felt it was incredibly unlikely and would probably still play it even if it didn't play well, just for Taro.
So yeah, seeing people come in caring only about the gameplay, with some not caring at all about the story and others being outright flippant or critical towards it, kind of dilutes the niche cult community aspect there was to the fanbase.

Look, I really like the fact that Metal Gear Rising is getting a gameplay "sequel", but if I'm quite honest, I've had to suffer through some of my favorite videogames undergoing gameplay changes to pander to other fanbases and it absolutely ruined them for me. Oh, please. Drakengard 1 was a heavily watered down musou, Nier was a near-open world action adventure, and Drakengard 3 was closer to a hack 'n' slash god of war game or character action game. Literally every major official Taro entry in the series has gone through a major gameplay shift. We practically expect it at this point, given that Taro seems to have a policy of never making the same game twice.
Drakengard 2 doesn't count because literally Taro's only role was video editing and a few tips on the creative team to make some shit feel like part of the world, visually, or connect it to the previous one. He didn't write or direct it, which is why as part of the series timeline, it has its own, separated branch.

If you have any curiosity about the type of story we're expecting at all, I'll give you a quick rundown.
In Drakengard you play as an absolute psychopath soldier nobleman life-bonded to an incredibly jaded and cynical, misanthropic dragon that constantly shits on Humanity, and said soldier's sister is a "seal" on the world, keeping the true form of the world at bay with the aid of three other seals supporting her. Along the way, you enlist companions such as: An incredibly racist priest, a mind-broken and barren cannibalistic elf with a strange fixation on children, a blind literal pedophile, and a child that is incapable of growing older.
Shit gets fucked up. Bad. Real bad. Time has no meaning, and every ending in the game gets progressively worse. I mean it. Literally every single time you reach another ending, it actually gets worse.
Coming hot off the fifth ending, Nier takes place in another world and is a much calmer and somewhat marginally less fucked up game than its predecessor, but becomes a lot more sad once you start putting the pieces together with each ending following the first. Basically you play as a father taking odd jobs around the town, protecting people, gathering herbs, and so on, in order to pay for medicine to help his daughter who suffers from some kind of magical malady where runic letters spread across her body, causing immense pain. Along your journey, you come across an INCREDIBLY sassy floating book, a literal futanari, and a blind kid with immense magical powers.
Shit gets fucked up. Bad. Real bad.
Then Drakengard 3. You play as a woman trying to commit fratricide and steal all her sisters' manbitches. Shit gets fucked up. Bad. Real bad.

I speak only from my own experience but I think the typical platinum fan is much more likely to just ignore the story and focus on the gameplay if said gameplay is really good. Apart from the obvious dodge and parry, yes, the two command specials (the cyclone and tetsuzanko) not only granted i-frames at the outset, they'd ALSO trigger Focus (Witch Time) if you did them in an appropriate window; they literally read as dodges in the game engine.
The same was also true of vehicle attacks (press dodge at the right moment at the end of a combo) though I think this was an anti-frustration thing since the mechanic piggybacked on the dodge command and it might be irritating to attempt to dodge an attack and accidentally get hit because you were in the post-hitbox frames of a combo ender attack

The entire point of PlayStation is that it gets fucking everything. This means it's appealing to a million different audiences and thus individual games will have low attach rates. Also, no it didn't. It was great for its time but I really think Bayo was a step in the right direction in a lot of ways. For one thing Bayo made lock-on about locking-on, not an arbitrary gateway to half your movelist. For another, Bayo made your "styles" and weapons a great deal more immediately available, minimizing the number of button presses it took to access any given set of abilities. For a third, charge modifiers were just a great idea, the perfect extension to timing-tap combos as a way of punishing mashing.

From Bayo, it uses the weapon equip mechanic; your light and heavy attacks can each have a separate weapon equipped and their combos change based on load slot. You also have a button to quick-call a second loadout.
From T:D, the aiming mechanics are the most obvious, it also appears to have an immediately accessible command launcher/lifter for juggles.
From both, it's looking like a dodge-focused game rather than a parry-focused one with an emphasis on reactiveness and timing, and a large component of space management in combat.

In TD pressing heavy attack and interact (Y+B) auto-triggers an uppercut launcher no matter what weapon is equipped.
It SEEMS like Nier has something similar, since it seems like the demo player is triggering launchers at will rather than off of specific combo strings.
