I've played plenty of actual FPS games without using a weapon model at all, it's like a slightly less terrible version of seeing your entire character on the screen in a console game

it not only blocks your vision, but it slows down rendering as well

They updated the weapon in Last Light, so that it could be fully reloaded in one go. Even fit into the lore by saying smiths took the flaws of the weapon into account and updated it by fiddling with the mechanism, pretty sure the model reflects the change as well. Just one of many things that prove how fucking amazing those devs are (although I admit I do miss the janky homemade feel of the original gun, cycling empty chambers).
