Yes the director said so. He wants to show all the feelz now and have him become human and calm or some sort of shit. The only reason Kratos worked was because he wasn't like every other action hero, all heroic and humble. He was just a pissed of dick, who wanted to kill everything, and that worked.And they said the mechanics are outdated, gotta have a lot of cutscenes and less interactivity now.
Exploring a temple on the back of a titan, where you need to do trials for various gods to prove your worth which are filled with decent combat, platforming, puzzles, swimming and other challenges? Outdated, here you have some walking with your son. Attacking mount olympus with titans while fighting on the back of one with a giant poseidon monster while its climbing on the mountain and everything is shaking, moving and falling down? Yeah, boring and outdated. Gotta walk with my son to hunt a deer and pat him on the back, much more emotional.
Because the combat and presumably also the character of Kratos is not similar at all to the previous installments.
"Rebooting" the name makes it easier to market to newcomers.
I'm kind of on the fence myself, the combat and puzzles were fun, but always a secondary to the experience/enjoyment, the best part was always tearing gods, titans and beasts to fucking shreds.

Like all the shitty reboots made by hacks, they're desperately trying to sell the game to both old and new audiences and don't want to alienate the latter by making them think they have to play older games in the series, because they don't and they're just using the IP for brand recognition to sucker old audiences.

That won't happen. They said the kid will teach him to be human while you teach the son to be a god. There is even a dedicated button for context actions with the son.
At best, it will be passing the torch, Kratos redeems himself and dies at the very end and the kid takes over for the sequels. Which I would prefer, let Kratos die already and have his peace.
