>>341954465
>why the one we see in super star is powerful enough to grant wishes is unknown
Its no different than Star Dream and it may be even less powerful considering it doesn't have the research and upgrades Haltmann put in it.
A ton of the Haltmann and Star Dream descriptions directly mention wishes and dreams, Haltmann wouldn't bank so much on a computer if he didn't believe it had the power to grant his wish
They don't literally grant wishes though, they're just insanely powerful ancient science. Nova didn't poof Pop Star into submission, and the Galacta Knight stunt was pulled off by Star Dream just as easily.
The real question is what about it let Marx go Soul, I assume Soul OS is Star Dream's new found consciousness after mixing with haltmann going Soul
Just what kind of dark magic did the ancient put inside these things (Novas, master crown, mirror) though?

Its so weird to me that they propose it as being weaker then the ball like dark matter. I always though the sword form looks way more threatening.
Besides Bandana Waddle Dee, I wanna see this badass fucker in Smash Bros, specifically in his swordsman form.
I'd like to see him play unique compared to other characters by not having a dedicated jump button but instead have him float around like he does in the kirby games. The jump button could work like an airdash of sorts, and because Dark Matter can float around, he shouldn't have access to dodging or rolling.
If I got into the Kirby series before the Smash ballot ended I would've definitely voted for him or Waddle Dee. Smash 4 is desperately lacking in villains.

The cutscene is called "Dark Rainbow Theif" and in DL2 you get the rainbow drops back and then make the sword with it
I think its wielding its usual sword but mixing in the island's rainbow it stole into it for certain attacks, so if Kirby hadn't intervened he probably would've done this and use the rainbow for his offensive
>>341955990

I wish Kirby would go back to having a completely out-of-left-field creepy final boss. They stopped doing it after Squeak Squad. RTDL, TD, and Robobot did something interesting with the secret EX and Soul bosses. I think that is a fine addition to the series, picking that up from SSU and improving it.
SSU's version made sense since it didn't have collectibles to bar the final boss behind, so putting it in the True Arena was a good compromise. I wish Kirby would go back to that. Have some real head-scratching collectibles to find and have the final boss change after collecting them all. As it stands, there really is no reason to collect any of them beyond some really sub-par extra levels or for the 100% wank.
Still, I am glad the series is avoiding straight up reusing villains. The fan-service the TA is handing out is fantastic nonetheless. That being said, I would love for Nightmare to return as a villain. Seeing that art of him in Smash 4 was hype as fuck.
>>341956691
Drawcia's also the one that started the trend of souls having really fucked up nightmare screams of bloody murderand I love it.
Haltmann's laughter is more of lunacy than anything, but but I still love it.
>>341956876
What are you talking about? Star Dream OS is the creepiest motherfucker in the whole series. Also there was blood in the fight against Dark Metaknight's Revenge
So have the devs revealed anything lore-wise on Miiverse recently?
I seem to have forgotten, what's his name again?
>>341956937
Haltmann Soul doesn't exist, it's just Star Dream absorbing his soul, so there's no Soul Form scream this time unless you count the Nova's.
They should put a space elevator-sized sign on Popstar which just says "I wouldn't"
>>341957086
Yeah, NOVA's scream is bone-chilling. And you do hear Haltmann screaming in the background in the heart phase which is deeply unsettling.
>>341957086
My bad, I wasn't implying that Haltmann's soul was a boss, just that I like his laughter because it fits the bill of bosses in Kirby games having maniacal screams/laughs.
Not from me, but an artist on DeviantART.
>The big point and why I liked the Shimomura games is because, although they were still simple plot-wise, there was a very strong emphasis on cuteness vs darkness and light/dark contrasts, with some very nice symbolism regarding Zero. It also help that the games were on the more serious side.
>Kirby, as portrayed in the Shimomura games, is a young adult (not a child) and stand up to the various threats to his world because of empathy (and not because he's a "Star Warrior" or some kind of destined hero). Likewise, one primary reason I like Zero so much is that in contrast to other Kirby villains, including Marx, Zero is not merely deeply evil but is so in a serious way not unlike Giygas and Porky from the Mother serie, who are some of the most beloved villains not just among kid-friendly settings but in all of video gaming and with good reason.
>>341954132
They sampled Gooey
Ok I'm a dumbass and kind of confused, is magolar considered a villian or good guy?
>>341957251
Man, Haltmann was a ass, but he didn't deserve that shit.
Magolor, Marx, and Drawcia deserved their shit though.
>>341957395
>I feel that the sheer horror of how badly Zero outsmarted you and made your entire quest futile in Kirby 64's bad ending is a far bigger punch and a far more effective proof of Zero's cunning than Marx's gloating after football tackling Kirby in front of Nova. The fact that Zero never bother to speak to Kirby and is so extreme in her methods make her far scarier and effective in my opinion as it also, in a way, showcase her contempt for Kirby (as she doesn't even regard him highly enough to bother gloating).
>Another example is how Zero responded to Dark Matter's failure in Dreamland 2 by taking up a battleship (the Hyper Zone) and ramming the barrier that Kirby had created at the end of Dreamland 2 before proceeding to basically tear the life out of Pop Star, enslaving everyone and beginning to assimilate the entire planet leaving only tiny pockets of survivors over the planet's surface, the game involving Kirby helping the survivors in each stage and booting out the Dark Matters out of his home, part by part. Despite not saying a word, I felt that Zero's glare at Kirby from inside the Hyper Zone after making a mess out of his homeworld established her in a far more effective way than Yin-Yarn or Marx's gloating, the main point being that while other villains spoke about being evil, Zero simply *is* evil.
>>341957084NOBLE HALTMANN, WE ADORE HIM
NOBLE HALTMANN, WE ADORE HIM
EVERY DAY WE WISH HIM GLORY
So what happens after you destroy the heart? I assume NOVA explodes like in Superstar, except Kirby has no vehicle. The Halberd went down earlier.
>>341956876
I feel the True Arena system works, as its stands its really only one extra fight anyways. This way no one misses out on the climactic finale because of collectibles, but they miss out on the secret final bosses if they can't git gud enough and beat the True Arena with some gameplay skill as supposed to "you did the thing specifically designed for you to do a bunch of times, congrats".
Also head-scratching might just be the perfect word to describe K64's collectibles, but not in a good way, they hardly ever took good advantage of the game's gimmick or lined up with the gameplay, just arbritary "use X combo on stationary block", random shit like drawing pizza out of fucking blocks or needing to have played DL3 to know the solution. In recent games you get more sensible and clever use of gameplay like "hey did you notice poison clouds being picked up by the wind? how about this puzzle with a bunch of wind and bomb blocks out of the way?". I will say though we've been getting less with how predominant the spectacle gimmicks are to collectibles, but when they are regular ones they usually involve good use of your abilities' moves and not just breaking a designated barrier
>They stopped doing it
what world do you live in?
>Squeak Squad
>discount piss easy baby Dark Matter

Haltmann is the worst out of all of them though because he's destroyed countless worlds in the past. Magolor and Marx were just looking for a sucker to make them powerful.
>>341950046
No, because dark lives don't matter
>>341957490
>The symbolism behind Zero (before she got watered down) was extremely nice too, with her tears of blood representing her infinite, all-consuming hatred of all living things and her white color representing how she is such total darkness that she loop back into 'nothingness'. The very name is significative. And of course, there is her second appearance as a fallen angel, one of the most impressive and iconic bosses in the serie (with a matching battle theme).
>All of this while portraying Kirby as genuinely innocent and empathic and with a cast that was definitely geared more toward the friendly, cute side than Meta Knight's rather hit-and-miss emphasis on coolness.
>It made for a very interesting and frankly, unique contrast as Zero and the Dark Matters were not merely the villains, they were the outright antithesis of the setting ; there is a reason why the conflict between Kirby and Zero is often compared to Ness's own struggle against Giygas. The contrast is similar, in a way. And it is one that should have been embrassed in my opinion ; most series either choose to be completely cute or completely dark. I found that the contrast made the Kirby serie feel much more unique, fresh, and magical.

This really comes off as a bit pretentious and stretching things a little much
I think its good people try to analyze the themes or what made it effective, but we are talking about a rather simplistic set of games here where the story was almost entirely visual and minimalist, which worked greatly to their advantage but trying to take them in a grander context loses the point
If anything going out of your way to describe some of this shit as so epic undermines the whole thing, and with the style of game being so different it feels silly to compare to Super Star or fucking Earthbound. Earthbound is an RPG, with dialogue for fucking days, shimomura is good orb vs bad orb with some good atmosphere around it.
I also see just a lot of bias and gearing the conversation one way, like he's got a beef with Super Star, wants more Shimomura and everything else falls out the wayside. One of them got lonely, attacked Pop-Star, and when it failed, the others, being some kind of a hivemind, found out and invaded the place. 0 / 02 looked the way it did because it's an unknown factor; what's this giant bleeding eye doing with the Dark Matter, oh wait it's the leader, oh shit.
They were mysterious and nobody knew anything about them other than they hated everything because they were so lonely, and they wanted to plunge the world into darkness because of it.
Meanwhile, villains like Magolor, Sectonia, and Haltmann have backstory. They do not represent evil or darkness. They represent mystery, vanity, and loss.
Magolor was being manipulated by the Master Crown, which was the true villain, a mysterious object with a great evil inside it.
Sectonia became obsessed with her beauty to the point of becoming a narcissistic dictator, all because of an evil mirror.
Haltmann became so stricken with grief, he focused it on attempting to create a machine to grant his wish of seeing his daughter again, which influenced him to invade Pop Star.
0 and Dark Matter's appeal is that they don't need backstory. They work well without it because they are an alien force obsessed with darkness and destruction, not an object, or a monarch, or a company.

>>341959915
I don't think any of them are particularly better than another. Each of their styles have their own pros and cons going for them. Kumazaki's directed games seem like a well tuned balance between the two opposites however, and manages to do a little of their own thing at the same time.
I'm kind of curious, did anyone else have to look up how to get this Crystal Shard too? I had no clue what it wanted me to do, and the shape of the object had to be so specific it wouldn't accept anything else.
>>341959759
The one-shot villains are usually better though. Dark Matter will fall out of favor pretty soon if he doesn't get the bombastic endgame appearance he deserves.

Amazing Mirror and Squeak Squad both had their own completely different directors, so it was an awkward period for Kirby for some time. Kumakazi didn't start directing until Super Star Ultra, which probably explains the direction the rest of his games took.
Fun fact, Nightmare in Dreamland was directed by both Sakurai and Shimomura.
Who's havingno funduring the D3 fight?Every other boss has some method to either get away from you after a little while, or is scripted to do so. Not only is he constantly on your ass before he splits, but there's always at least one clone on your ass afterward, I had more trouble with him than I did with Star Dream, and he's really fucking up true arena for me.

As far as I'm concerned, Sakurai's the guy who did "the classics" and set the framework for everything down the road, Shimomura did the more slow-paced but comfy Dark Matter trilogy with all the side characters that everybody loves, and Kumazaki has it in the bag with the solid and fast-paced gameplay AND actual cutscenes leading to actual plots/backstories. All are very nice in their own ways.

Squeak Squad was co-developed by a bunch of people
You can actually pinpoint a sort of "dark era" for HAL right after Sakurai and Shimomura leave and the console game struggle begins, we start off with Amazing mirror which had to be co-developed by a bunch of people while most of HAL's hands are busy with the GCN Kirby, which as we know doesn't go over too well. We get a spin-off from HAL themselves (Canvas Curse) but still nothing on the console side, then we get Squeak Squad to sorta fill us up with regular Kirby, but again co-developed outside of HAL and on the cheaper, handheld side. Then we stay on the handhelds with SSU, which brings our boi, who's been climbing the ladder while dodging the console mess, into directing it. The next game will finally be a console game, but totally out of HAL's control and basically nintendo's way of saving two asses, give Good Feel the leg up it needs to sell their game and HAL an escape goat while they get their act together on their final attempt on console Kirby, which thanks to Kumazaki goes over really well despite a strict deadline. The rest is history.
>>341960997
As an Archer user, I can fully confess that D3 is the most miserable fight in the whole True Arena run. No matter how much gud I git, that fight's the one that'll always knock some health off.
>>341960969
Then maybe it's not so much a director thing, as it is Squeak Squad lacking much of its own identity. It honestly felt like a step down from Amazing Mirror and I never did care about it much, even though I did 100% it.
>>341960721

>>341959915
Hard to say. I wasn't entirely a fan of the slow pace of Shimomura's games, but the aesthetic and sheer comfiness was top notch. Sakurai's games were more my style. Kumazaki really seems to shine with the boss battles.
My concern is that he's too reliant on previous Kirby lore. Both TD and PR have had big callbacks for the sake of callbacks, and I hope he isn't afraid of just building a new branch in Kirby story.
Of course that's a minor gripe. Gameplay is still as great as ever.

>and I hope he isn't afraid of just building a new branch in Kirby story
... You mean like Sectonia and Haltmann? These two factions alone have more content than every previous Kirby antagonist combined.
I do wonder what the next Kirby game would focus on. It's got Art, Mechs, Racing, and such jotted down, but what about music?
I can imagine it going as
>An evil orchestral group tries to suck the music out of Popstar and turn it into a somber classic world
>Kirby meets a new partner who is a magical musician who wields a magical baton and is able to transform into a magical floating baton herself and has a little music note shaped friend
>You must go through Popstar to obtain the legendary magical musical notes that maintain the balance of sound, melodies, and music throughout the planet in order to save them from the orchestra's hands and to help find the musician's father.
>New gimmick abillity is taking the form of a Pop Idol/Pop Star, singing your way through enemies and solving puzzles along the way, via rhythm tapping or such.
>Main villain is a crazy lady hellbent on making Popstar revert back to it's old state of music due to having lost her sanity thanks to immortality and tried hurting the magical musician and her father.

Also gonna use this to get out this rant I had about Squeak Squad and what makes certain Kirby titles shine, strap in
Squeak Squad sounds great in concept, just a Kirby game, from beginning to start its all Kirby gameplay, abilities with some move variety and while it has neat additions no crazy gimmicks overtake the whole experience, so why the sorta hate? Why is Amazing Mirror beloved to hell and back and its lil bro considered the worst? Aside from more specific quality issues, it just isn't as memorable. What makes games like Amazing Mirror, Kirby 64 or Super Star shine in people's eyes isn't just the consistent Kirby gameplay throughout, its in how they each frame it in a unique way. Yea you're Kirby and you do Kirby stuff but you do it in a maze of treasure and shit, or you do it in all these game modes each with their own gimmick, or you have a new style of gameplay entirely.
to be cont.. (so long as one of you reads all this shit I'll be happy)
>>341959915
I'm just glad that after two games he finally managed to make the game's gimmick be non-obtrusive, game-stopping and make it flow seamlessly with the gameplay.
I fucking hated Hypernova, whatever the super duper powers on Return to Dreamland were called.
Robobot was 10/10 because it didn't put the game in halt whenever it appeared.
Will he be making the new game? Or will a new person start a new Trilogy?
I love the Kirby community, so glad this is my favorite franchise
>>341962525
Moving forward: I love the recent games, but the spectacle gimmicks are a bit at odds with regular Kirby, the games aren't getting shorter, but they're not getting any longer either, so the more of these we see the less time as just Kirby through a regular level that we see. They kinda eat away at the variety of the gameplay, which is more jarring with it being the most varied and polished regular gameplay the series has ever seen.
This is why the bosses and True Arena are they way they are, this shit has to go somewhere and its why they're framed around fighting these bosses so much. They ask to take advantage of the complexity that is lost even to regular gameplay (as enemies are sitll easily beaten), they ask to do these bosses in a variety of ways.
I think next Kumazaki might want to look at Super Star as inspiration, as the game made itself stand out through how it framed so many Kirby adventures, and the right framing can go a long way to make the games memorable and marketable without needing to sacrifice regular gameplay or necessarily the spectacle and flair he wants. Based on interviews it feels like Super Abilities, Hypernova and the Robobot are in a big part nintendo's one demand, as they are easy to market, in that way Kumazaki has probably done his best to accommodate them, improving as he goes along and trying his best to make it work well.
I feel 3D is the easy answer now though, that's enough innovation and new framing to carry it through without needing to break up regular gameplay excessively, as the new regular gameplay IS the gimmick.
>Man, the DNA from that dark creature provided a useful clone!
>What if we use the larger, white creatures DNA?
>>341955162

>>341962847
>I feel 3D is the easy answer now though, that's enough innovation and new framing to carry it through without needing to break up regular gameplay excessively, as the new regular gameplay IS the gimmick.
I definitely feel like 3D Rumble is just a means of testing the waters to see how people respond to playing as Kirby in a 3D environment. If it turns out to be well received, they might finally move forward with making a full-fledged 3D Kirby game, which would be amazing.

>>341962289
Let me rephrase that. It may sound shitty, but whatever man, me and a fellow anon would appreciate helpful critiques.
The lady was once a young kind hearted girl who once met the music notes herself and befriended them and basically it was a Rosalina and Luma relationship with them. Of course, she was gifted immortality to help protect the notes and help maintain the balance of music. Yet, as time went on, the girl, now a young lady, soon starts meeting many people and even a man she loved so dearly, but only for him and many others she knew, dying in front of her and causing her to slowly lose it and the music notes, unaware. It heads to a point where the classic genre she loved so much and was one of it's creators, loses appreciating and soon snaps.

Hat Drop is an alternate form of the Down Thrust. To activate it you Jump, Press B, then follow with Down B.
It's a slow version of the Down Thrust and bounces off of enemies rather than going through them.

>>341965109
Nope. It's just a boring fight that basically wins itself for you. Cool atmosphere, but the mechanics are baby Star Fox that goes on for far too long. It doesn't help that the last normal battle is Haltmann, who's way more annoying than Sectonia to fight.
I didn't get the kill screen because it's common sense to kill the shit he summons. Even if you let 1 or 2 get away (in the Soul OS version, where he summons two of each) you'll still make it.
>>341960608
Oh shit, are ypu referring to that green text?
How much of Meta Knightmare Returns is canon?
I mean, he doesn't actually defeat all of the Haltmann Works Company all over again, right? They kind of got destroyed by Kirby. So if it didn't happen, does that mean the clones or Galacta Knight were never actually encountered?

I haven't cum that hard from music since Bloodborne's DLC.

>>341969926

>>341969801

>>341969801I swear those gold statues of his daughter look different from Susie in some fashion. Somebody needs to get a better screencap of those because it might be a Sectonia situation again, but on a much more subtle level.
>>341970285
>It's implied
No. Nowhere is that implied.
Suzie got sent to Halcandra, lost her memories because of the accident, learnt about the Star Clocks and when she returned she infiltrated Haltmann's company to steal the Star Dream.
