This is the most pretentious thing I've read today. Non-linearity is an exaggeration in any game, even the ones where decision making is the ONLY mechanic (David Cage games, Until Dawn, Life is Strange, etc.), and most of the time it provides the same amount of content as an extra wing in a generic dungeon would provide.
Western RPGs are leagues ahead in terms of characterization and sheer balls-to-the-wall budget allows them to attempt new things, but most of the time these new things boil down to branching options that all lead to the same result and writing B movie plotlines which for some reason people think are great. The Last of Us is a zombie movie with nothing new to speak of, Life is Strange is literally just the Butterfly Effect, etc. You're playing glorified Zork, that's all any RPG will ever be, don't crawl up your own ass about it.

Witcher 3 has probably the best writing I've seen in a game, fantastic music and voice acting, and great art direction. But the gameplay is mostly mediocre, and the combat is downright terrible. The game is still good thanks to the strength of its writing, but don't try to pretend it plays well. It wasn't even the best game of 2015, let alone "in years".

I wish Western aesthetics and general character design could be combined with JRPG gameplay.
Western games have great settings (most of the time when it isn't tolkien or post apocalypse garbage) and fantastic character design, yet suffer from shitty western gameplay.
JRPGs and Eastern games have absolutely god awful character design and character roles/personalities. Mainly due to the shitty Otaku market of "everything has to be a cute girl with the latest anime stereotype, or I WONT buy it."

In what way are Growlanser games influenced by WRPGs? I haven't found any WRPGs like it. And while there are a few routes in some of the games it's still very linear compared to other JRPGs like SaGa.

The last WRPG I greatly enjoyed was ME1, rest of the series was forgettable. Dragon Age Origins was stock as fuck and felt lazy despite the praise it got from everyone. I played the first Witcher, found the combat to be awful and skipped the rest.
If Dark Souls counts as JRPG it was the one I enjoyed last, but overall they have taken a turn into teen angst with awful designs everywhere, thus Souls games really stand out from the retard fashion cancer that the other games have became.

In Wayfarer of Time, there were 42 endings and three major routes. Depending on how you fought battles, characters could live or die. Conversation choices also determined this, as did side quests.
While there were 'only' three routes, what characters lived within those routes, and their reactions to you depending on your actions, could vary wildly.
Also, I really liked the background art. I wasn't a 100% on the character art, but the background art was great.

Love/relationships/fucking in WRPG's is a natural extension of being a normal human being. If you don't spend all your time on 4chan, you're going to make friends, fall in love, and fuck the people you fall in love with.
JRPG's beat around that bush most of the time, because it's tradition to have the protagonist either completely oblivious to the opposite sex, so socially inept that they turn off the opposite sex and so it becomes a huge running joke, or so insufferably one-dimensional that you're forced to make up your own head canon to fill in those blanks 'cause the developers are so socially inept that discussing that sort of thing is awkward to them.
As a result, JRPG's tend to be boring, because the relationships never go beyond the typical 'YOU'RE SUCH A GOOD FRIEND, HERE, ALLOW ME TO DESTROY THE FINAL BOSS WITH THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!'. You don't commiserate with people, learn to like them, and discover what you have in common with them, and not feel some kind of attraction to them. JRPG's are largely unbelievable stories that follow the same stale tropes that they've been following for ages now.
So shit on WRPG's all you like, but at least they're willing to explore those sorts of topics. For some people, that's all the social interaction they get.

Most people don't actually know what Tolkien is. They've seen the movies, and when a game is in a european-like setting and has good and bad guys, and is medieval, they associate it with Tolkien.
There isn't anything quite Tolkien like today, not even in fantasy literature. Things like D&D are producing much more spin-offs. I don't know of any games that has Tolkien-like orcs or Tolkien-like elves. The elves are always so superficial, either muh-nature obsessed, or just supposedly ancient and "high", without any history or distinct culture. Most of the times they are just calmer humans with pointy ears.

If they don't make it fucking weird, sure, but I don't expect that to ever happen in a JRPG because they'd get too awkward about it. When it comes to JRPG's and dating sims, they tend to be extreme opposites: JRPG's never explore their relationships, dating sims are basically nothing but and only exist to segue into porn.
If they can find a nice balance, I'd say they'd be on the right track.
I just don't see it happening. I mean, look at FF15, the next big JRPG. The entire premise of the game is camaraderie and friendship, as if that's a premise that hasn't been explored a billion times before in a billion other JRPG's.

Although I also find it obnoxious that he gets hung up on JRPGs not being "real" RPGs, which has no bearing on their quality and is a "criticism" which could also be applied to many WRPG subgenres like dungeon crawlers, he's right about them requiring little to no strategy.
Naturally this is a huge problem for a game that revolves entirely around making strategic decisions like what orders to issue to each party member, how to manage resources, what equipment/skills/items/characters to bring to each fight, how to upgrade characters, etc.
There are exceptions like later games in the Megaten franchise but even they are rarely challenging outside of boss fights, which you need to wade through hundreds of annoying trash mobs with no hope of ever scratching you to get to.
There's no reason for these fights, which aren't fun at all and take up a huge amount of play time, to exist other than to provide the necessary resources to make the fun parts of the game work; demons for fusion fodder, levels for removal of fusion limits, etc.
Surely there must be a better way of allowing the player to acquire these resources than this mobile-game tier time wasting shit.

Yes, there are a lot of JRPGs that play more like visual novels with shallow RPG systems tacked on, but a lot of them also feature a focus on player choice that tops modern WRPGs, easily.

It's more of an RPG than something like Borderlands, but the choices are so narrow, infrequent and confined it would be hard to class it as a full fledged RPG.
I would play WRPGs more if every single one wasn't required to be written with a thick layer of smarmy grime over every line. Characters don't talk to each other, they quip back and forth until the scene ends. The Witcher 3 was impressive on a lot of accounts, but it was the fucking worst in that regard.
It's like they're not confident in their characterization but they still want the game to take itself seriously, so they compromise by making every character sarcastic and wear the dreamworks face at all times. JRPGs may have annoying-ass characters, but at least they lean into it a little.

You can put it more generally that western games tend to go for a more realistic visual style, which somewhat holds back the variety of settings you can get away with- Valkyria Chronicles wouldn't work if you tried to make it look super-realistic, for example. Japanese games, on the other hand, tend to draw a lot of their visual inspiration from anime and manga, which enables you to do a wider variety of settings/styles.

Forgot to mention that also, while the level of freedom offered by the choose-your-own-adventure style decisions you can make in western games might not be that great, lots of WPRGs allow you the freedom to kill anyone you want and go anywhere you want.
I could never get into WPRGs and just followed the intended "standard" path through the game whenever I tried, so I don't know how much non-linearity this really produces but it's probably more than in things like Life is Strange.

Trash mobs and other time wasters are a problem in every game, unfortunately. If it's not fighting some repetitive mooks it's lengthy climbing/unscrewing/etc. animations or fetch quests. The only real way around it seems to be enemy placement to allow for more engaging experiences, because it doesn't waste resources making a billion new enemies for each area but still keeps things fresh. Can we talk about music and atmosphere? I enjoy both genres, but I always end up playing custom music in the background to replace the game's OST or lack of.
Western games tend to sound so forgettable or copied and pasted while Japs always have amazing music. Dark Souls is silent for the most part but when Sakuraba tries it's god tier.
Western music reminds me of the stuff picked for bible movies or something used for depicting the Roman Empire. But Jap tracks cover just about every genre.
Why is that? And if someone has a western game with memorable music I'd gladly listen.

Western games have adopted a Hollywood view of "fuck the soundtrack, we'll throw in one set piece song and the rest will just be generic mood setters". Probably has a lot to do with Western artists with any talent getting snatched up and signed.
Does anyone else generally dislike jrpg's but love Final Fantasy 8? FF8 is the only jrpg that ever hooked me in. I have a theory that the game is so polarizing because it appeals to people who don't really like jrpg's and it turns off people who traditionally like them.
